Noradrenaline (NA), 100 microgram intraventricularly (ivtr), produces an evident hypertension, lasting for up to 15 min. A previous ivtr administration of propranolol (100 and 500 microgram), alprenolol (100 microgram), sotalol (100 microgram), (-)INPEA (100 microgram), (+)INPEA (100 microgram), Ko 1366 (100 and 200 microgram), or practolol (20 microgram) abolishes the hypertensive action of NA. The results indicate that the central nervous system of the rat contains structures similar to the peripheral beta-adrenoceptor, and that they are involved in the central regulation of circulation.

Attention to the problem of hypertension in women using oral contraceptives has been increasing as the use of these preparations has increased. It is estimated that between 1-5% to 15-18% of those women using these preparations suffer from hypertension. Some sources have linked the occurrence of hypertension to a concentration of renin in the blood. It is not clear to this author, though, whether this is the result of some physiological disruption caused by the contraceptive, or caused by some other malfunction of this mechanism. The appearance of hypertension in the course of hormonal contraceptive use is considered to be an indication for the discontinuation of its use.

The authors describe a case of a girl aged 9 years with a syndrome of malformations--cleft of the upper lip, maxilla and palate, lack of C2 arch fusion, polycystic lesions of the vermis and cerebellar hemisphere with obliteration of the aqueduct. The syndrome of intracranial hypertension with prevailing cerebellar symptoms was the cause of diagnostic and surgical management. Suboccipital craniotomy was done with insertion of ventriculoatrial valve which restored the normal intracranial pressure. The girl recovered and resumed education.

In patients with signs of intracranial hypertension caused by subdural haematoma or brain oedema following craniocerebral trauma significantly increased concentrations of HVA and 5-HIAA were found in the cerebrospinal fluid obtained by means of lumbar punction in relation to a control group comprising patients with lumbar disc prolapse. In patients after craniocerebral injuries with open fracture of cranial bones without disturbances of consciousness dopaminergic system hyperactivity was observed lasting up to the 7th day after injury. In patients with symptoms of brain commotion after craniocerebral trauma a significant rise in 5-HIAA concentration was observed in the cerebrospinal fluid on the 7th day after trauma. This may suggest increased serotonin turnover early after trauma.

The hypnotic action of hexobarbital is weaker in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) than in Wistar rats. The difference does not appear in young rats (up to the sixth week of life) and appears gradually concomitantly with maturation of animals. There was no correlation between the changes of reactivity to hexobarbital and development of hypertension. The rate of metabolism of hexobarbital was similar in SHR and Wistar rats. There is a close relationship between the changes in reactivity to hexobarbital and psychomotor activity: both are significantly higher in SHR than in Wistar rats. The results suggest that the main cause of a weaker action of hexobarbital in SHR is higher intensity of stimulatory processes in the central nervous system.

Hypotensive action of some antihypertensive agents was studied on normotensive and spontaneously hypertensive rats in acute and chronic treatment. The reactivity of normotensive rats was much more weaker than in rats with spontaneous hypertension (SHR). Results of the experiments indicate also that the selection of new antihypertensive agents should be based on tests carried out with at least two models of hypertension.

Seven cases of SLE with concomitant neurological syndromes are reported. In 2 cases brain stroke with right-sided hemiplegia and aphasia developed, in the remaining cases brain-stem stroke with subarachnoid haemorrhage, progressive hemiparesis and signs of intracranial hypertension, chorea, status epilepticus in terminal uraemia were observed. In one case myasthenia coexisted. Severe neurological syndromes were preceded by signs of involvement of other organs and in most cases by low-grade signs of central nervous system involvement. Treatment with corticosteroids and immunosuppressants resulted in significant improvement without complete remission. A retrospective survey of clinical material showed that modern therapeutic methods have improved the prognosis in systemic lupus erythematosus independently of central nervous system involvement.

In the light of 4 cases of cerebral cysticercosis observed in the period 1970-1976 in Zabrze the authors call attention to the possibility of a very long, lasting even tens of years, time period preceding development of intracranial hypertension and to the diagnostic difficulties in this period. If immunological reactions are negative and the cerebrospinal fluid is normal, presence of calcified cysts in skeletal muscles visible on radiograms may be helpful. An uncertain syndrome of cerebral manifestations in a patient with occupational exposure (butchers) requires ruling out of cysticercosis. Three of these patients were butchers. In 2 plain radiograms showed calcified cysticerci in the muscles, in one they were present in the brain.

Tissue concentrations of noradrenaline (NA), dopamine (DA) and adrenaline (A) were compared in spontaneously hypertensive (SHR) and normotensive (NCR) rats, aged 1, 3, 8, 14 and 24 weeks The organs analyzed included the brain, subdivided into prosencephalon and rhombencephalon, heart, adrenal glands and kidney. Brain catecholamines were significantly lower in SHR than in NCR, and the difference appeared already at the age of 3 weeks. Concomitant increase was found in the adrenal NA and A concentrations of the SHR. Concentration of NA in the heart decreased in the SHR following onset of hypertension. It is concluded that the diminished NA, DA and A concentrations in the brain as well as the augmented adrenal NA and A levels in the SHR may be causally related to the development of hypertension, while the heart NA level reflects the secondary, hypertension -- related changes.

The author analysed from the standpoint of familial history of headaches 89 cases of headaches treated at a neurological outpatient clinic in a period of 3 years. In 14 cases migraine was diagnosed, in 31 cases vasomotor headaches, in 16 post-traumatic headaches, in 7 psychogenic headaches, in 5 cases sinusitis, in 4 intracranial hypertension, in 12 cases the aetiology was unclear. In cases of vasomotor headaches in 90% of cases strong headaches were present in close relatives of the patients while in other groups the familial factor was infrequent.
