Qi-gong relaxation exercise was used for treatment of pregnancy induced
hypertension
(PIH). Patients exercised 3 times a day until labor. In this study, there were two groups with 60 cases of PIH who had delivered in each group, they were treated by Qi-gong for one group and by medicine for another used as control. The clinical efficacy was evaluated according to PIH combined scores showed effective for 54 cases (90.0%) in Qi-gong group and 33 cases (55.0%) for the control group (P less than 0.01).
Meconium
stain in amniotic fluid was present in 12 cases (20.0%) in Qi-gong group and 29 cases (48.3%) in the control group (P less than 0.05). The incidence of abnormal hematocrit (greater than 35%) before treatment was 52.4% and decreased to 23.8% (P less than 0.05) in Qi-gong, while in the control group was 35.7% before treatment and 45.2% after treatment (P greater than 0.05). The mean value of blood E2 by RIA showed increased from 22.97 +/- 13.16 micrograms/ml to 33.74 +/- 34.01 micrograms/ml after Qi-gong treatment in 29 cases. The microscopical observation of finger nail capillaries showed various degrees of improvement of microcirculation after Qi-gong exercise for 17 cases and after a course of Qi-gong treatment for 11 cases in Qi-gong group. While for the control group, there was no changes after sit-still for some time.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

A review of 46 perinatal deaths was conducted using a 1982 to 1985 regional perinatal network database of 6701 delivered postdate (greater than or equal to 42 weeks gestation) infants. Perinatal mortality (6.9 per 1000 births) increased as gestational age advanced beyond 42 weeks, and was higher in young teenagers or mothers with some additional antenatal complications, such as
hypertension
.

staining of the amniotic fluid, low Apgar scores, low birthweight, congenital malformations, and neonatal complications, including pneumothorax, meconium aspiration, and seizures, were associated with perinatal death.

Severe perinatal aspiration of meconium is frequently complicated by unsuccessful neonatal adaptation with associated pulmonary hypertension. This vascular complication is supposedly related to pulmonary release of vasoconstrictory agents, including metabolites of arachidonic acid. Thus, to investigate the role of prostanoids on these meconium-induced circulatory changes in the lungs, the hemodynamic response to meconium instillation was studied in acetylsalicylic acid-pretreated juvenile pigs. Twelve 10-wk-old pigs with adapted lung circulation received 3 mL/kg of 65 mg/mL human meconium via the endotracheal tube. Six of them were medicated with 10 mg/kg acetylsalicylic acid 30 min before meconium insufflation. Hemodynamic parameters and urinary excretion of stable metabolites of thromboxane A2 and prostacyclin were measured serially for 6 h after the insult.
Meconium
administration induced a biphasic increase in mean pulmonary artery pressure and pulmonary vascular resistance, and a rapid rise in urinary levels of prostanoid metabolites. Acetylsalicylic acid pretreatment prevented the initial (0-1 h) pulmonary hypertensive response and increase in prostanoid excretion. During the second phase (1-6 h), acetylsalicylic acid did not attenuate the progressive increase in mean pulmonary artery pressure and pulmonary vascular resistance nor did it affect the longitudinal distribution of the pulmonary resistances. Our results thus show that in adapted porcine lungs, arachidonic acid metabolites contribute to the early hypertensive response, but have only minor effects during the second phase

obstruction of prematurity is a distinct clinical condition that occurs in very low birth weight infants, predisposing them to intestinal perforation and a prolonged hospitalization if not diagnosed and treated promptly. We report a series of 21 infants, including 2 detailed case reports, whose clinical course is indicative of meconium obstruction of prematurity. Specific risk factors are identified along with descriptions of clinical and radiologic findings, disease course, treatment, and outcome.
Meconium
obstruction of prematurity was more common in infants with a maternal history of pregnancy-induced or chronic
hypertension
, suggesting the possibility of decreased intestinal perfusion prenatally. Inspissated meconium was located most frequently in the distal ileum, making this disease process difficult to treat. Gastrografin enemas were safe, diagnostic, and therapeutic. Delay in diagnosis and treatment was associated with perforation and delay in institution of enteral feeds.
