Treatment with rHuEpo can eliminate many symptoms that had been attributed to uremia. Repetitive punctures in children undergoing three times weekly subcutaneous (SC) rHuEpo can result in noncompliance with the therapeutic regimen. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of once weekly SC injection of rHuEpo in children with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) on CAPD. Six children (5 males, 1 female, mean-age: 6.0 years, range: 0.5 to 15.8 years) with ESRD on CAPD were treated with a regimen of rHuEpo 150 U/Kg/week SC for 12 weeks. All patients received oral iron supplementation. All children had improved appetite and well-being. The adolescents showed an increased ability to engage in regular activities. The hematocrit increased from 20.3 +/- 1.2% to 31.7 +/- 3.8% in 12 weeks. The mean weekly increase in hematocrit was 0.95 +/- 0.34%. There was no significant differences in iron indice prior to and during rHuEPO treatment. Side effects related to rHuEpo included transient
pain
at the site of injection in all, pruritus at the site of injection in 1 child, hyperphosphatemia in 1 infant, iron relative deficiency in 2 children and an asymptomatic increase in blood pressure in 1 hypertensive child. None of the 5 normotensive patients developed
hypertension
. We concluded that once weekly 150U/kg SC rHuEpo is effective in correcting anemia in children on CAPD. This regimen results in few side effects, decreases the cost of treatment and produces less distress to the patients by avoiding repetitive injections.

Four patients admitted to our hospital with different symptomatology are studied: a 9-years-old boy with hyperhidrosis; a 47-years-old woman with arterial
hypertension
and two young males, 25 and 36-years-old, respectively, with thoracic
pain
. In all cases, the presence of pheochromocytoma was suspected. One of them died due to left ventricular failure with acute lung edema. The other three patients were diagnosed by hormonal determinations, detecting a supra-renal body with abdominal echography and computerized axial tomography and undergoing surgery. Currently, they are asymptomatic.

The authors present their experiences concerning the effect of extrarenal factors on the results of radionuclide examination. Functional and functional-morphological examinations of the kidneys and urinary tract can be negatively affected particularly by emotional stress, orthostasis, dehydration, increased kidney motility, address administered drugs during examination (diuretics), drug treatment of the primary disease, muscular strain, cold,
pain
, increased pressure in the vicinity of the kidney,
hypertension
, hypotension, as well as further conditions. Radionuclide methods can objectify these processes, the given negative effects can however be presumed to occur also at other examination procedures of the kidney and urinary tract. The conditions of examinations have thus to be optimized and standardized. The examining physician has to know which drugs the patient is receiving and he has to know their effect on renal function.

In 1983-1988, the results of conservative and surgical treatment of patients with atherosclerotic ischemia of the lower limbs were assessed with the aid of a questionnaire. A possibility of prognosis was assessed with the use of mathematically processed data obtained with such approach. An effect of clinical symptoms (intermittent claudication distance, resting
pain
, necrosis) and stage of the disease (duration, K/R index) and risk factors (blood cholesterol, triglycerides, diabetes mellitus, ischemic heart disease, arterial
hypertension
) on the result of surgical treatment was analysed. The obtained results suggest that clinical symptoms and risk factors may predict the results of surgical treatment in the atherosclerotic ischemia of the lower limbs.

Hereditary links between different behavioral and physiological traits were studied in rat strains SHR, WKY and their hybrids F1 and F2 by analysis of correlations in segregating and nonsegregating gene-rations. Genetic correlation of arterial pressure with body mass, intake of KC1 solution and the ability to avoidance learning (directed positively) and with characteristics of exploratory activity (directed negatively) was shown. These traits seemed to be possible genetic markers of arterial
hypertension
. Genetical correlates of the ability to elaborate active avoidance conditional reaction (arterial pressure and
pain
sensitivity) testify to relief of active avoidance learning in animals with inherited active-defensive type of behaviour, manifested by predisposition to pressor reactions and by suppressed emotional reactions to
pain
stimulation. Frequency in intertrial crossings during avoidance training displays positive correlation with characteristics of exploratory behaviour. Positive correlation between different characteristics of exploratory activity was established both in segregating and nonsegregating generations.

The effectiveness of monophasic and multiphasic oral contraceptives (OCs) depends on their ability to suppress ovulation, change endometrial growth and ovum receptivity, and reduce cervical mucus receptivity to sperm. They are all more than 99% effective, but, depending on the type and dose of hormone components, they have different side effects. The estrogen component (ethinyl estradiol) of most new OCs is between 30 and 35 mcg, which reduces the risk of estrogen side effects, especially thromboembolism and
hypertension
. The Food and Drug Administration does not recommend use of an OC with an estrogen component for lactating mothers, while the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the American Academy of Pediatrics believe it is fine. Estrogen may protect against coronary artery disease, yet the estrogen component of today's OCs is so low that the progestin component may cancels this beneficial effect. It also prevents breakthrough bleeding. The most frequently used progestins in OCs are norethindrone and norgestrel. They prevent ovum implantation, sperm penetration through the cervical mucus, and ovulation. Progestins, especially norgestrel, increase the risk of coronary artery disease. Other side effects include acne and weight gain. Progestin benefits are reduced menstrual blood loss,
pain
during menstruation, premenstrual tension, and endometrial cancer risk. The ideal estrogen-progestin balance depends on the individual, but the estrogen component should be between 30 and 35 mcg, and the progestin component should be the lowest possible dose to reduce metabolic side effects. If an OC user with a well stabilized cycle who takes another recently prescribed drug experiences unexpected breakthrough bleeding or spotting, this change may indicate a drug interaction. Absolute and/or possible contraindications of OC use are smoking after age 35, history of breast or endometrial cancer, liver disease or impaired liver function, cardiovascular risk factors, and diabetes mellitus.

To test the hypothesis that
hypertension
diminishes
pain
perception, a study was made that evaluated the relation between arterial blood pressure and thermal
pain
perception in human subjects. The average mean arterial pressure in all 20 men studied (10 hypertensive, 10 normotensive) proved to be significantly related to both thermal
pain
threshold (p = 0.05) and tolerance (p = 0.003). The difference between normotensive and hypertensive groups in baseline and posttest plasma levels of beta endorphin was also significant (p = 0.02) and indicated an interaction between endogenous opioids and blood pressure. Other recent studies of
hypertension
in relation to hypalgesia were also reviewed. An increased
pain
threshold was found in hypertensive versus normotensive rats. In cats, electrical stimulation of vagal afferent nerves (cardiopulmonary baroreceptors) suppresses nociceptive responses, and both pharmacologic elevation of blood pressure and vascular volume expansion produce antinociception. Together with preliminary findings in human studies, these results indicate an interaction between
pain
-controlling and cardiovascular regulatory functions that is probably mediated by the baroreceptor system.

A serious complication to pregnancy-induced
hypertension
and preeclampsia is the HELLP syndrome (H - haemolysis, EL - elevated liver enzymes, LP - low platelet count). Perinatal and maternal mortality are reported to be high, 7-60% and 2-24%, respectively. A non-obstetric diagnosis is often made, such as gastrointestinal or haematologic disease. Typical symptoms are epigastric and right upper-quadrant
pain
and tenderness, nausea and vomiting. Recognition of the clinical and laboratory findings is important, so that early, aggressive therapy can be initiated in order to prevent maternal and perinatal death. We present data from 14 patients with the HELLP syndrome treated in our hospital. There was one intrauterine death. The other infants were discharged in good condition. Two of the patients had eclampsia.

The post-thrombotic syndrome which is caused by deep venous thrombosis and characterized by
pain
, oedema, pigmentation, eczema, lipodermatosis, varices and ulceration, is due to deficient function of the venous valves and/or obstruction of the deep veins with venous
hypertension
. The diagnosis may be established by investigation of the investigation of the muscular-venous pump by pletysmography or dynamic phlebography and invasive measurement of the venous pressure is not employed to any great extent. The results of valvuloplasty have, by and large, been negative. The main form of treatment is, therefore, conservative compressive bandaging which can reduce the symptoms, facilitate healing of venous ulcers and prevent recurrence of ulcers. It is emphasized, however, that this treatment must be continued consequently during the remainder of the patient's life, regardless of other treatment.

A sub-capsular haematoma of the liver is a rare but very serious complication of pregnancy. We report a case of a primipara whose pregnancy was first complicated by
hypertension
, then by a haematoma of the liver at the 28th week of amenorrhoea. It was diagnosed because of the clinical symptoms associated with the
hypertension
and a
pain
in the right hypochondrium and nausea. The diagnosis of haematoma of the liver was made before rupture and confirmed by ultrasound of the liver and by tomodensitometry made it possible to avoid operating on the liver during the laparotomy that was carried out to terminate the pregnancy. Regular X-ray follow-ups showed that the lesion had regressed in six months. MRI investigation of the parenchyma of the liver showed no cause of the lesions. If there is even the slightest suspicion of a haematoma of the liver in pregnancy, ultrasound nowadays should be carried out because it is indispensable to make the diagnosis.
