Osteoarthritis (OA) is increasingly prevalent worldwide and is associated with a significant economic burden. Despite the increasing number of patients with OA, treatments to manage the condition remain symptomatic, designed to control pain, and improve function and quality of life while limiting adverse events. Both the EULAR (European League Against
Rheumatism
) and the OARSI (Osteoarthritis Research Society International) issued new guidelines in 2007 and 2008 recommending a combination of nonpharmacological and pharmacological modalities to manage OA effectively. Because of gastrointestinal risks (including ulcer complications) and cardiovascular risks (including
hypertension
and thrombotic events associated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs [NSAIDs]), these guidelines propose acetaminophen as the first choice anti-inflammatory agents. However, NSAIDs are considered to be more effective than acetaminophen for relief of pain. Given the efficacy, safety, and tolerability issues associated with NSAIDs, development of new agents to manage the pain associated with arthritis but without the cardiovascular and gastrointestinal adverse events remains a priority. This review considers current recommendations for the treatment of OA, the most recent evidence on the cardiovascular risks associated with current NSAID treatments, and the potential of newer anti-inflammatory agents with improved benefit-risk profiles.

The extracts of Salacia reticulata (Salacia extract), a plant that has been used for the treatment of early diabetes,

and gonorrhea in Ayurveda, have been shown to have an anti-obesity effect and suppress hyperglycemia. In this study, the effects of Salacia extract on various symptoms of metabolic disorder were investigated and compared using these TSOD mice and non-obese TSNO mice. Body weight, food intake, plasma biochemistry, visceral and subcutaneous fat (X-ray and CT), glucose tolerance, blood pressure and pain tolerance were measured, and histopathological examination of the liver was carried out. A significant dose-dependent decline in the gain in body weight, accumulation of visceral and subcutaneous fat and an improvement of abnormal glucose tolerance,

and peripheral neuropathy were noticed in TSOD mice. In addition, hepatocellular swelling, fatty degeneration of hepatocytes, inflammatory cell infiltration and single-cell necrosis were observed on histopathological examination of the liver in TSOD mice. Salacia extract markedly improved these symptoms upon treatment. Based on the above results, it is concluded that Salacia extract has remarkable potential to prevent obesity and associated metabolic disorders including the development of metabolic syndrome.

(Euphorbiaceae) are some of the commonly used medicinal plants in India for curing ailments ranging from common cold, skin diseases, and dental infections to major disorders like diabetes,

, etc. To understand and correlate their medicinal use, trace element studies on the aqueous extract of these medicinal plants have been carried out using particle-induced X-ray emission technique. A 2-MeV proton beam was used to identify and characterize major and minor elements namely Cl, K, Ca, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Br, and Sr in them. Results have revealed that these elements are present in varying concentrations in the selected plants. Notable results include very high concentrations of Cl, K, and Ca in all the leaf samples, appreciable levels of Mn in all plants, high Zn content in T. cordifolia, and the aqueous extract of Moringa leaves compared to others and relative higher concentrations of Cr in all the plants.

We exploit a natural experiment in Montevideo, Uruguay, in order to analyse the effects on human health of granting formal property rights to untitled individuals. Because of administrative mistakes committed decades ago by an institution that no longer exists, such rights may be transferred to residents of some neighborhoods but not to residents of others. We found that titling reduces the probability of suffering from

and diabetes and in some cases

and asthma as well within 17 years of being offered property rights, but we did not find statistically significant evidence that the housing quality functions as a channel between titling and health.

The present study evaluates the possible hypoglycemic activity and ameliorative effects of oral administration of ethanol extracts (EEBC) and butanol fraction (BFBC) of Buchholzia coriacea seeds, a plant in use traditionally for treating diabetes,

, cold, cough and catarrh, in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic mice and rats. Fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels were evaluated before and after extracts administration. EEBC and BFBC significantly decreased (P<0.05) FBG in hyperglycemic mice and normoglycemic rats within 4 and 12 h, respectively after extract administration. The administration of EEBC, BFBC and glibenclamide (a standard antidiabetic drug) for 10 days significantly lowered (P<0.05) FBG level in STZ-induced diabetic rats by 55%, 64% and 56%, respectively. EEBC and BFBC significantly (P<0.05) decreased hepatic injury induced by STZ as evident in the decreased activity of serum alanine amino transferase and aspartate amino transferase compared to in the STZ-only treated group. Similarly, both extracts significantly decreased (P<0.05) the elevated levels of serum creatinine, urea, total cholesterol, triglyceride and thiobarbituric acid reactive species (TBARS) products in diabetic rats. Serum superoxide dismutase activity was significantly enhanced (P<0.05) by treatments with EEBC, BFBC and glibenclamide. Overall, the results suggest that B. coriacea seeds contain a potent hypoglycemic and antioxidant agent suggested to be a flavone glycoside concentrated in BFBC which may find clinical application in amelioration of diabetes-induced secondary complications.
