Of 59 infants with jejunoileal atresia, seven presented with absence of mesentery, the main superior mesenteric artery ceasing to exist beyond the origin of the right
colic
or ileocolic artery, and a helical ileum. This distinctive form of jejunal atresia has been recognized with increasing frequency in recent years. Distal to the atresia, the small bowel receives its blood supply retrograde from an artery derived from the ileocolic or right
colic
arcades, and the ileum coils around its nutrient artery in an "apple peel" or "Christmas tree" deformity. The first three patients in this report died. The lastion, but they recovered as their malabsorption gradually disappeared. The treatment includes resection of the dilated bowel, as in other atresias. Resection of part of the distal bowel may be required for additional atresias or for poor vascularity with questionable viability. Postoperative malabsorption generally requires intravenous
hyperalimentation
.

A young lady with extensive burns and multiple fractures developed renal calculi, and repeated attacks of
colic
, accompanied by nausea and vomiting which delayed her
hyperalimentation
and mobilization. The insertion of J stents stopped these episodes of
colic
and the stones were eliminated by extracorporeal lithotripsy before the burn wounds were healed. Urinary infections cleared and rehabilitation thereafter was uncomplicated.

A 33-yr-old Japanese woman, married, no parity, was treated for endometriosis. Danazol 400 mg a day was initiated on September 25, 1986, for 21 consecutive days. She became severely constipated and had left lower
abdominal colic
pain. Five days later, she had to be admitted to the hospital, because she had had no bowel movements for 12 days and the abdominal pain was severe. On the day after admission, she had frequent painful bowel movements. The stool was blood-tinged, but pathogenic bacteria were nil. Ischemic colitis of the stricture type was identified. She was treated with
hyperalimentation
and anticholinergic agents. At 3 months and 5 days after discharge from hospital, danazol 400 mg per day was readministered, and 11 days later, the patient again became constipated and complained of the same pain in the left flank. We consider that danazol-induced constipation played a role in the onset of the ischemic colitis.

Healthy infants during the first year of life often have multiple functional gastrointestinal symptoms such as
colic
, regurgitation and constipation. The usual fuzziness and/or crying at this stage of life is interpreted as digestive discomfort or pain, and the corresponding concerns result in unsuitable behaviors as
overeating
, interruption of breastfeeding, multiple changes of formulas, innumerable queries and unnecessary medications. The aim of this paper is to update knowledge on the pathophysiology of the most common functional gastrointestinal dis orders, in order to avoid over diagnosis and select the most appropriate therapeutic approach and convenient nutritional interventions.
