Hyperlipidemia
is a major risk factor for development of coronary artery disease. Cassia auriculata is traditionally used in India for medicinal purposes. In this study, effect of ethanolic extract of Cassia auriculata flowers (Et-CAF) was investigated in Triton WR1339-induced hyperlipidemic rats. Treatment with the Et-
CAF
(450 mg/kg b.wt) significantly reduced the total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG) and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL) levels and significantly increased the high-density lipoprotein (HDL) level associated with reduction of atherogenic index in hyperlipidemic rats. However, there was no change in the serum lipid profile of normal rats treated with Et-
CAF
alone. The results suggest that Et-
CAF
has a beneficial effect in treating
hyperlipidemia
and may serve as a potential drug for prevention of hyperlipidemic atherosclerosis.

and oxidative stress are known to accelerate coronary artery disease and progression of atherosclerotic lesions. The present work was undertaken to investigate the possible antihyperlipidemic and antioxidative effect of C. auriculata flower on hyperlipidemic rats.
Hyperlipidemia
was induced in rats by a single intravenous (iv) injection of Triton WR 1339 (300 mg/kg b.w.) and it showed sustained elevated levels of serum cholesterol and triglyceride. Ethanolic extract of C. auriculata flowers (Et-CAF) (150, 300, 450 mg/kg b.w./day) was administered to normal and hyperlipidemic rats for 14 days. Serum and liver tissue were analysed at three different time intervals for lipid profile, lipid peroxidation products, antioxidants enzymes and the activity were compared to the cholesterol-lowering drug, lovastatin (10 mg/kg/b.w.). Parameters were altered during
hyperlipidemia
and reverted back to near normal values after Et-
CAF
treatment or standard drug lovastatin. Lipid peroxidation decreased whereas the activities of superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and catalase increased in Et-
CAF
treated rats. Pronounced changes were observed at 450 mg/kg b.w. of Et-
CAF
for 2 weeks and it was comparable to the standard drug lovastatin. The current study provides a strong evidence that Et-
CAF
has a beneficial effect in treating
hyperlipidemia
and ROS without any side effects at the dosage and duration studied.

Hyperlipidemia
in the male albino Wistar rats was induced by Triton WR - 1339. The treatment of the hyperlipidemic animals with the ethanol extract of Cassia auriculata flower (Et-CAF) exhibited a dose dependent reduction in serum triacylglycerol, total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL), very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) similar to the hyperlipidemic animals treated with standard drug atorvastatin.
Hyperlipidemia
altered the protein and mRNA expression levels of the key genes (SREBP-1c, ACC1, SREBP-2, HMGR, HMGS, CYP7A1, and ABCA1) in lipid metabolism and the treatment with Et-
CAF
(300mg/kg b. wt) reverted these levels similar to that observed with atorvastatin treated hyperlipidemic animals. These results revealed that Et-
CAF
extract served as an efficient anti-hyperlipidemic drug.
