The purpose of the investigation was to study the alterations in the lipid and lipoprotein content in the blood serum, the liver and the aortic wall of rats with experimentally induced salt, renal (Goldblatt) and adrenal-regeneration hypertension. The experiments were carried out on 59 Wistar rats (25 normotensive controls). It was established that both the serum and the liver lipid patterns vary in the three experimental models of hypertension. Thus, while in salt-induced hypertension no hyperlipidaemia and hyperlipoproteinaemia were established, in renal hypertension the serum lipid and lipoprotein levels were significantly increased in comparison to the controls. The cholesterol content in the liver was increased in all the three models of hypertension. The remaining lipid fractions were within normal ranges or a little decreased in salt-induced hypertension, while in renal and adrenal-regeneration hypertension their quantity was significantly increased. A two weeks' treatment with hypotensive prostaglandin E1 diminished the lipid and lipoprotein contents in the liver of rats with adrenal-regeneration hypertension, only cholesterol remaining unaltered. The blood serum level of free fatty acids increased in all the three models of experimental hypertension, as did the cholesterol and beta-lipoprotein level in the aortic wall. The alterations in lipid and lipoprotein metabolism established in this study are regarded as specific for the hypertensive process itself, since no histological alterations characteristic of atherosclerosis were observed.

Patterns of lipid and lipoprotein turnover were examined in blood and aorta of 6-10 months old and 4-4.5 years old rabbits with the renal form of experimental hypertension, experimental atherosclerosis and combination of both pathological states. In experimental hypertension contents of the total fraction of low and very low density lipoproteins, total cholesterol and triglycerides were increased but the total lipolytic activity of postheparin blood plasma as well as a fraction of alpha-lipoprotein cholesterol in the total cholesterol were decreased both in young and old animals. experimental atherosclerosis in rabbits of various age with normal and elevated blood pressure was accompanied by the highest level of hyperlipidemia in old animals without distinct differences between rabbits with various initial arterial blood pressure. Deposition of lipids in aorta, which was observed in the animals with elevated arterial blood pressure after additional administration of cholesterol, was especially characteristic for old animals with experimental renal hypertension.

To find changes in activity of red-cell sodium-lithium counter transport (RBC Na+/Li+CT) in IgA nephropathology (IgAN) and renal hypertension (RHT), we measured the activity of RBC Na+/Li+CT in 21 patients with IgAN and 13 patients with RHT and compared it with that in 23 normal persons and 17 essential hypertension (EHT) patients by improved Canessa's method. RBC Na+/Li+CT activity in the EHT patients and EHT patients with positive family history was significantly higher than that in normal group. The activity of TBC Na+/Li+CT in the hyperlipidemic RHT patients was increased as compared with the normal group. The activity of RBC Na+/Li+CT in IgAN patients with hyperlipidemia and hyperlipidemic hypertensive IgAN patients was significantly higher than that in normal group. There was positive correlation between the activity of RBC Na+/Li+CT and serum cholesterol level in 34 patients with renal disease. The results indicate that enhanced activity of Na+/Li+ CT is a genetic marker for EHT patients, and hyperlipidemia is probably related to the enhanced activity of RBC Na+/Li+CT in parts of RHT patients and IgAN patients.
