The effect of epidoxorubicin (epiDX) on contractility of left ventricle was followed up in patients treated according to protocols containing the drug. The examined group comprised 30 pts with Hodgkin's disease. 16 women and 14 men, aged 17-70 years, and 9 pts with high grade malignant lymphoma, 3 females and 6 males in the age of 21-64 years. Using Hewlett-Packard echocardiograph diastolic and systolic diameter of left ventricle in typical place was evaluated, 24 hrs before and after 40 mg of epiDX application as well as after completing therapy (total dose epiDX 80-480m mg). The percentages of fractional shortening of the left ventricle dimension (FS%) and ejection fraction (EF%) were calculated from the above parameters. There were no changes in measurements of cardiac function after the first dose of the drug. The fractional shortening of left ventricle dimension and EF in patients who have completed therapy were statistically significantly lower in comparison with those before therapy and control group. Heart failure was not observed. Decreased indices of heart muscle contractility and ejection fraction found in our patients may be connected with the epiDX therapy, though in dosis lower than 50% of the cumulative one, and may express the late toxicity of the drug.

Immunohistochemical and flow cytometric multiparameter analysis of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) was performed on fifteen formalin fixed, paraffin embedded lymph nodes with malignant lymphoma (eleven non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, four Hodgkin's lymphomas), and fifteen lymph nodes with metastatic carcinomas. A general concordance between PCNA measurement by both methods has been observed: the percentage of positively stained cells in tissue sections correlated well with the percentage of cells expressing this antigen in cell suspensions (r = 0.76). Both diploid and aneuploid tumors expressed PCNA, and a correlation between PCNA and the percent cells in S-phase was evident in both: in PCNA-positive tumors the mean percent of cells in S-phase was 16.5%, and in PCNA-negative tumors, 5.9%. The data indicate that PCNA can be detected in formalin-fixed tissues by either classic immunohistochemical analysis or by flow cytometry.

Proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA/cyclin) is a useful marker of proliferation and its expression correlates with prognosis in some human neoplasms. The clinical course of nodular sclerosis Hodgkin's disease (NSHD) varies in both grades (NSI, NSII) as defined by the British National Lymphoma Investigation. Expression of PCNA in Reed-Sternberg cells and their variants was evaluated in NSI and NSII. There were no significant differences in the ratio of PCNA-positive cells in both groups. The results suggest that differences in the clinical course do not depend on the proliferative rate of Reed-Sternberg cells and their variants in NSHD.

The results of flow cytometric DNA-analysis on fresh and paraffin-embedded tissue were compared in four various groups of tumors. The best correlation of the results was observed in the group of non Hodgkin's lymphomas. Comparative analysis of the ploidy on fresh and paraffin embedded tissue demonstrated discordance in particular in mammary carcinoma and malignant melanoma groups. The values of proliferative fraction assessed on fresh and paraffin embedded tissues were interrelated.

The past three decades have shown the increasing success of chemotherapy as the treatment of malignancies. This therapeutic success has focused attention on the associated gonadal toxicity. Cytotoxic agents may induce infertility and endocrine disfunction. Data for analysis were provided by studies on gonadal function after chemotherapy for: Hodgkin's disease, acute lymphocytic leukemia, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, breast cancer; renal disease, bone-marrow transplantation. The likelihood of developing chemotherapy-induced damage depended on the chemotherapeutic regimen and prescribed dose, illness, sex and degree of gonadal activity at the time of treatment. Despite of the high frequency of chemotherapy-induced gonadal damage its prevention has received a little attention. LH-RHA and oral contraceptive therapy and testosterone have been tested to a limited extent of gonadal toxicity. Usually in male endocrine disfunction of testis does not need to be treated because it is moderate and does not cause any clinical symptoms. In female hormonal substitution seems to be necessary to decrease unpleasant feelings connected with menopause induced by chemotherapy. Further investigations should considered use of new cytotoxic agents without gonadal toxicity or use of new drugs which can better protect gonadal function.

The presence of soluble differentiation antigens has been recently shown in the sera of healthy subjects and in different pathological disorders. These soluble antigens represent truncated froms of membrane receptors that lack transmembrane and intracytoplasmic domains. They may rise from proteolytic cleavage of the original membrane-bound receptor or by synthesis from separate alternatively spliced mRNA's coding for soluble forms. Increased levels of soluble IL-2R, sCD8 were found in adult T cell leukemia, hairy cell leukemia Hodgkin's disease, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and chronic lymphocytic leukemia. The presence of sCD30 was found in the above mentioned diseases except for hairy cell leukemia. Serum levels of sIL-2R, sCD8, sCD30 antigens correlated strictly with disease activity and results of treatment.

A case of 32-year old male with congestive heart failure and pleural effusion was described. When he was seven years old, he suffered from Hodgkin's disease and radiotherapy of the mediastinum and the neck was instituted. Twenty years later he developed acute myocardial infarction and then two episodes of circulatory arrest. The examinations revealed extensive, calcified stenoses of the coronary and cervical arteries. Risk factors of atheromatosis were absent. Moreover, the diagnosis of pleural mesothelioma which could also be caused by irradiation, was established.

Two cases of actinomycosis in chronic myelogenous leukaemia (CML) and Hodgkin's disease (HD) are presented. The first patient with blastic crisis in CML had painful infiltration above and beneath the clavicular region, affecting the right humeral joint, what required differentiation from neoplastic infiltration. Specific infiltration, formation of fistuli and good response to antibiotic therapy suggested actinomycosis. Finally actinomycosis was diagnosed by microbiological and histopathological examination. The infection with actinomycosis in the other patient interfered with early diagnosis of coexistant Hodgkin's disease. The histopathologic examination of right cervical lymph nodes indicated the chronic inflammatory process. The subsequent histo pathologic examination of the axillary lymph node showed Hodgkin's disease, type LD. Culture from the exudating wound after lymph node excision was positive for actinomyces. Simultaneous treatment with cytostatics and antibiotics resulted in complete recovery of patient. In the above reported patients, actinomycosis complicated the course of CML and HD. The immune deficiency of the organism in both patients facilitated the development of the actinomycosis.

Hodgkin's Disease in 12-years old boy was described. After 1-year remission, the relapse of disease localizes in the mediastinum occurred. At the same time myasthenic syndrome was diagnosed. During chemotherapy of H.D. relapse, symptoms of myasthenic syndrome regressed.

We present a case of Hodgkin's disease first symptom of which was paraneoplastic syndrome in a form of myopathy. It caused a delay in putting forward an appropriate diagnosis.
