Visual (VEPs) and somatosensory (SEPs) evoked potentials in a group of 33 patients (mean age 49 years) with non-
Hodgkin lymphoma
(n-HL) without CNS involvement were recorded. There were 24% of patients with pathological VEPs and 30% of patients with pathological SEPs. Pathological VEPs and SEPs were both recorded in 42% of patients. In comparison to the controls the statistically significant prolongation of mean latencies of VEPs, SEPs and transit time to cortex were found in the group of n-HL patients. These abnormalities were noted much more often in patients with long duration of the disease and with intermediate type of malignancy. In the untreated patients evoked potentials were normal. In 6 patients despite normal neurological status and normal eeg the evoked potentials were abnormal. The evoked potentials examination seems to be very sensitive method of afferent pathways involvement estimation and can be used for diagnosis and prognosis in n-HL patients. This method reveals CNS lesions more often than physical examination or eeg.

Hodgkin's disease
(HD) is a heterogenous disorder in terms of morphology, immunophenotype, genotype and association with viruses. Seroepidemiologic, immunohistochemical and molecular studies suggest that Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) plays an important role in the pathogenesis of HD. We used in situ hybridization (ISH) with digoxigenin-labeled EBER 1 and EBER2 probes to examine a series of 28 lymph node specimens from untreated patients from Poland with the nodular sclerosis NS 1 and NS 2 subtypes of HD to detect EBV mRNA in Reed-Sternberg cells (RSC), or in small non-neoplastic lymphocytes called "bystander cell" (ByC). EBV mRNA was detected in 12 of 28 cases (32.1%). Furthermore, the expression of Latent Membrane Protein (LMP) of EBV strongly correlated with expression of EBER 1 and EBER 2 in RSC but not in "bystander cells", which were LMP negative. The correlation between EBV status and immunophenotype of RSC are discussed.

The effect of peripheral blood T lymphocytes from 42 patients with advanced
Hodgkin's disease
(grade III and IV) on the autologous marrow erythroid colony formation was studied in diffusion chamber culture. It was found, that unfractionated T lymphocytes suppress the BFU-E--(burst forming unit erythroid) and CFU-E--(colony forming unit erythroid)--derived colony formation by releasing an inhibitory activity. The suppression of colony formation was noted already at 0.25 x 10(5) cell concentration. In experiments with 0.5 x 10(5) and 1.0 x 10(5) T cells the inhibitory effect was increased. Subsequently it was shown, that this inhibition was generated by radioresistant, CD8+ and HLA-DR- subset of T cells. In control experiments, T lymphocytes from healthy subjects had no influence on the erythroid colony formation.

Complications were described in two patients with non
Hodgkins lymphoma
(large cell anaplastic lymphoma and histiocytoma malignum) after completion of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Both patients died. In one of them it was established at autopsy that the cause of death was ARDS, while in the second case it was the clinical course which suggested the same diagnosis.

A case of a 12 year old girl with
Hodgkin's disease
is described. In the course of her illness congestive cardiomyopathy developed. The authors discuss many possible etiologies of congestive cardiomyopathy in this case with special referral to the cardiotoxicity of antineoplastic drugs.

The immunological classification of 28 high grade non-
Hodgkin
's lymphomas (NHL) in children was shown. The morphological classification was based on Working Formulation, the immunological classification--on acute lymphoblastic leukemia subtypes. The phenotypes were assayed cytofluorometrically with monoclonal antibodies and compared to ontogenic stages in B and T cell development. Small non-cleaved cell lymphoma (Burkitt's type) was seen in 13 patients, lymphoblastic lymphoma in 12 patients, low differentiated in 3 patients. Immunological classification showed B-lymphocyte origin of blast cells in 15 patients including 11 small non-cleaved Burkitt's lymphoma (mature B and cALL phenotype), 3 undifferentiated cases (pro-B and mature B cell) and 1 case of lymphoblastic lymphoma (cALL type). T-cell origin of blast cells was demonstrated in 13 patients. The immunological classification used routinely was helpful in selection of patients with unfavourable prognosis. The more precise description of blast cells was valuable for better adjustment of therapy and better prognosis.

The immunophenotype and the DNA parameters of 21 high grade B-cell non-
Hodgkin
's lymphomas considered in terms of the Kiel Classification were studied by flow cytometry. The centroblastic and immunoblastic lymphomas differed in the expression of lymphocyte markers, however no characteristic immunophenotype for each lymphoma type could be distinguished. Assessment of the FSC/SSC dot plots with histology enables to distinguish subpopulations of the lymphoma cells. The immunoblastic and centroblastic lymphomas were characterized by high proliferative activity although no significant differences in S-phase values between both groups could be found.

B-cell non-
Hodgkin
's lymphomas classified previously according to the Kiel Classification were reclassified according to the Working Formulation. The comparative analysis of flow cytometric data was done for these two classification systems. It was established that flow cytometric data describe defined groups of malignancy more precisely in the Working Formulation, especially in case of the low grade lymphomas.

The presence of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) correlates with some cases of
Hodgkin's disease
(HD), and its latent membrane protein (LMP) has oncogenic potential by inducing expression of bcl-2 protein. Bcl-2 confers a longer half-life to the cell, which overexpresses it. As the translocation t(14,18), which is most often found in follicular lymphomas, and leads to overexpression of bcl-2, has also been reported in HD, it is possible that there is a correlation between these events in this entity. We stained immunohistochemically 40 cases of HD for the presence of bcl-2 and EBV-LMP. Bcl-2 positivity within reactive lymphocytes was revealed in 29 cases. In five of these cases a week, positive reaction in cytoplasm of Reed-Sternberg cells was observed (one mixed cellularity and four nodular sclerosis cases). The EBV-LMP immunopositivity was observed in 16 of these 29 cases (ten MC and six NS cases). The simultaneous presence of bcl-2 protein and EBV-LMP was found in two cases, the remaining three bcl-2-positive cases did not have EBV-LMP. These results do not support the hypothesis of the correlation between the expression of bcl-2 protein and the presence of EBV-LMP in the pathogenesis of HD as the LMP-dependent stimulation of bcl-2 oncogene.

DNA-ploidy in lymphoma cells obtained from lymph nodes of 107 patients with non-
Hodgkin
's lymphomas of low grade malignancy was studied prior to the treatment introduction. The survival of patients was within the range of 24-126 months (median 63 months). There were 70 hyperdiploidic and 37 diploidic patients. The statistical tendency to prolonged survival was seen among patients with lymphocytic lymphoma (CLL) as compared to other histological types of the disease. There were no statistical differences in the probability of survival (p-P) between diploidic and hyperdiploidic patients either in the whole studied group or in particular histologic types of lymphoma.
