Hodgkin's disease

could be divided into three groups: the first group was LN-1+/L26+/vimentin-, the second LN-1-/L26+/vimentin+, and the third LN-1-/L26-/vimentin+). Sixteen cases of follicular lymphomas were also examined and were all positive for LN-1 and L26 and negative for vimentin. Thus the vimentin negativity of the first group, including 7 nodular lymphocyte-predominant cases, gives further evidence of their germinal center B-cell origin. 's (H) cells in 45 of the 48 cases (92.5%). In none of 48 cases were these cells positive for S-100 or lysozyme, but strong vimentin-positivity still suggested monocytic or histiocytic origin. The results of our study suggest, at least, divergent origin of RS's and H's cells.

The immunophenotypes of 74 malignant lymphomas (9
Hodgkin's disease
, 19 low-grade B-cell, 20 high-grade B-cell, 8 T-cell, and 18 large cell anaplastic lymphomas [LCAL]) have been characterized with antibodies against leucocyte differentiation antigens, keratin, and vimentin. All the non-LCAL were CD45 positive and keratin negative. The LCALs had a more varied immunophenotype, with CD45 present only in 11 of 18 cases and keratin present in 5 of 18 of these rare lymphomas. The lymphoid origin of these latter cases was proven by gene rearrangement studies. All LCALs were CD30+, and, where tested, vimentin positive. Of four different vimentin monoclonal antibodies tested, V9 and MVI stained the highest number of lymphomas. Positive staining of tumor cells was seen in 61 of 71 cases.

The presence of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) genome in
Hodgkin
's and Reed-Sternberg (HRS) cells, as detected using in situ hybridization (ISH) with biotinylated BamHI "V" probes, along with the expression of EBV-encoded latent membrane protein (LMP) and vimentin was examined in paraffin-embedded sections of 39 immunomorphologically characterized cases of
Hodgkin's disease
(HD). ISH demonstrated EBV in HRS cells in 15 of 39 cases, whereas LMP expression was detected in 11 of 39 cases, only in the presence of EBV genome detection. With the exception of 1 case, in which HRS cells expressed B-cell-associated antigens, the LMP-positive cases included specimens in which HRS cells were of non-B, non-T phenotype. LMP expression showed a stronger association with lymphocyte depletion (LD) (3/3) and mixed cellularity (MC) (6/11) than with lymphocyte predominance (0/5) or nodular sclerosis (2/20) subtypes.
Vimentin
expression on HRS cells was found in all the LMP-expressing cases and only in a fraction (13/28) of LMP-negative cases. This study supports the view that HD represents a heterogeneous group of diseases also in terms of EBV association, LMP expression being strongly related to the "aggressive" LD and MC histological subtypes. In light of the supposed interactions between vimentin and LMP, their co-expression on HRS cells, as detected in this study, provides further evidence for a significant role of EBV in the development of a proportion of HD cases.

Signet ring B cell lymphoma is an unusual non-
Hodgkin lymphoma
. It is similar to signet ring cell carcinoma and liposarcoma in morphology which should be distinguished. We treated a 63-year-old male patient who suffered from abdominal pain for two months. Multiple enlarged lymph nodes were found in the retroperitoneum by CT scan. The needle biopsy showed neoplastic cells distributed uniformly with clear cytoplasm and the nucleus squeezed to the side mimicking the appearance of signet ring in morphology. By special staining, the neoplastic cells were positive for CD45,
Vimentin
, Bcl-2 and CD20 but negative for AE1/AE3, S-100, CD3, EMA, CD5, CD10, Bcl-6, MUM1 , Kappa, Lambda and PAS . Ki67 proliferation index was much more than 80%. Based on the histological characters, a diagnosis of signet ring B cell lymphoma was made. Although the patient received six courses of R-CHOP therapy, he died of tumor recurrence at the 34th month after diagnosis.

Their incidence is increasing despite successful antiretroviral therapy. The mechanism behind this phenomenon remains unclear. Here, we obtained daughter clones of murine mammary gland adenocarcinoma 4T1luc2 cells expressing consensus reverse transcriptase of HIV-1 subtype A FSU_A strain (RT_A) with and without primary mutations of drug resistance.
