Positron emission tomography (PET) using 2-[
fluorine
-18]-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (18F-FDG) combined with computed tomography (CT) represents a three-dimensional imaging method suitable for staging in patients with non-
Hodgkin
's lymphomas (NHLs). The aim of our prospective multicenter study was to assess the value of initial PET/CT as compared with CT and PET alone for determining the stage and extent of the disease. A total of 122 patients with newly diagnosed NHL were examined using PET/CT. Four patients with resected lymphoma lesion and negative PET/CT were therefore excluded from the study. Of the remaining 118 cases, a total of 117 (99%) were described as 18F-FDG-avid. When compared with PET/CT, CT and PET showed very good sensitivity of lymph node imaging (97% and 100%, respectively); the specificity, however, was significantly lower (66.7% and 94.4%, respectively; p=0.0001). When detecting organ lesions, the sensitivity of CT and PET was lower than that of PET/CT (92.5% and 96.3%, respectively; p=0.0001); specificity was significantly decreased in CT and a little lower in PET (59.5% and 91.9%; p=0.0001). When compared with CT alone, PET/CT changed staging of the disease in 11 patients (9%) and was able to detect a total of 82 discrepancies in 67 of the 117 patients (57%). In conclusion, PET/CT is a new standard in imaging the involvement of lymph nodes and extranodal organs in NHL patients regardless of their histopathological types. Both sensitivity and specificity of the examination are higher than those of CT as well as PET alone.

These observations are based on investigation of B-cell lymphomas. Positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) was found to be useful both at staging and at measuring the therapeutic outcome after two to three cycles of chemotherapy (interim PET/CT). Several meta-analyses have confirmed the role of PET in evaluating the viability of the residual tumor mass after treatment. 18FDG-PET has been proved to have an excellent negative predictive value. Conversely, only a few studies have investigated the role of FDG-PET in T/NK-cell lymphomas. 's lymphomas (NHL), but very few studies have focused on its role in the initial staging of patients with ocular adnexal lymphoma (OAL). The aim of this study was therefore to evaluate the role of (18)FDG PET in the diagnosis of ophthalmologic lymphoma. A retrospective review of all imaging records, including computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and FDG PET, was performed. Forty-one OAL patients were included in the study. A pathologic review according to the World Health Organization classification showed 32 low-grade lymphoma patients (78%), including 26 mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphomas (63%). Ophthalmologic sites were intra-orbital + lacrimal gland in 24 patients (59%), conjunctival in 13 patients (32%), multiple in 4 cases, and bilateral in 6 patients. (18)FDG PET was positive in orbital and conjunctival sites in 68 and 35% of cases, respectively. (18)FDG PET positivity was correlated with pathologic sites detected by MRI in 22/30 patients (73%); (18)FDG PET positivity was correlated with pathologic sites detected by CT in 25/34 patients (73%). This study shows that (18)FDG PET has a lower sensitivity than MRI to detect ophthalmologic lymphoma, particularly in non-conjunctival sites.

This study retrospectively evaluated the diagnostic value of concurrent nasopharyngeal lesion and lymphadenopathy on positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) with

The eligible cases were from patients with HIV infection and lymphadenopathy and referred for FDG PET-CT to evaluate lymphoma or other malignancies prior to pathological investigation. FDG PET-CT images and interpretation reports were correlated with clinical information and pathological diagnoses. Among 22 eligible patients, FDG avid nasopharyngeal lesions were incidentally noted in 7 on PET-CT imaging, and all had lymphomas diagnosed with subsequent biopsies (6 diffuse large B-cell lymphomas and 1

The patients with FDG avid retroperitoneal or intra-abdominal lymphadenopathy had a greater possibility of lymphoma, compared to those with adenopathy localized only in the upper torso. -18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (18F-FDG PET) and 18F-FDG PET/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) in diagnosis, staging, localization of tumor radiotherapy, evaluation of treatment response and detection of recurrent tumors of PHL and PNHL is reviewed in this paper. The results of published 18F-FDG PET and 18F-FDG PET/CT studies in pediatric patients with HL and NHL were promising for initial diagnosis, for the localization of tumors, for radiation treatment and for early assessment of treatment response. However, as the sample size of these original articles was often small and a unified study design standard is lacking, more data are needed to better specify the role of 18F-FDG PET and 18F-FDG PET/CT in the management of PHL and PNHL. In conclusion, the 18F-FDG PET and 18F-FDG PET/CT appear superior to other imaging methods such as X-rays, CT, MRI and ultrasound, other nuclear medicine methods and bone marrow biopsy for the evaluation of pediatric lymphomas.
