Cytostatic long-term treatment for about 36 months was administered to 18 children with acute lymphatic leukaemia who were in long-term remission (43-98 months). Prophylaxis of meningosis involved intrathecal 198Au colloid and methotrexate. Seven recurrences occurred during the long-term remissions: the bone marrow was involved six times, leukaemic meningosis occurred once. Five out of seven recurrences occurred within one year of cessation of treatment. There were no complications induced by intrathecal radio-gold, such as the apathy syndrome or leukoencephalopathy. Intrathecal methotrexate led to side effects before administration of radio-gold: encephalopathy twice, paraplegia once. Symptoms regressed completely in two children, one child with encephalopathy continues to have symptoms. All three children were given 198Au colloid intrathecally thereafter which was tolerated very well. 198Au colloid represents an alternative for prophylaxis of meningosis with 60Co telecobalt irradiation in leukaemias and non-Hodgkin lymphomas in childhood.

Electrical stimulation of unmyelinated nerve fibers is analyzed, using point sources in a simple volume conductor model and a dynamic Hodgkin-Huxley model of nerve fiber. The excitation and blocking threshold of single cathode stimulation with an indifference anode at infinity are calculated by solving difference equations with axons of different diameters. The relation between the blocking threshold and the pulsewidth of single cathode stimulation is also calculated. The results suggest a method of selectively stimulating the smaller fibers in a compound nerve trunk. Two kinds of stimulation electrodes are designed to test this method. Both of them are proven to yield results in accordance with our model by the animal experiments on a toad's sciatic nerve trunk. It is possible to excite the smaller fibers without exciting the larger ones in a compound nerve trunk by properly controlling the stimulus intensity. The method is likely to be used in both physiological experiments and neural prostheses.

Tumors are infrequently reported in skunks, with only a few case reports published in the literature. Chylothorax associated with mediastinal lymphoma was diagnosed in a captive 7-yr-old male striped skunk ( Mephitis mephitis ). The animal presented with anorexia and apathy. Supportive care and prednisolone improved the animal's clinical status for 2 wk preceding its death. Histopathology supported the clinical findings, and the tumor was classified as a mediastinal non-Hodgkin lymphoma, stage 2b, which has not been documented in the literature.
