A total of 299 patients with Stage IA-Stage IIB nodal lymphoma treated by irradiation were evaluated for initial reactivation. The abdomen was the major site of reactivation for patients with supradiaphragmatic
Hodgkin's disease
. The non-
Hodgkin
's lymphomas reactivated in a variable fashion. Reactivation was prompt for patients with reticulum-cell sarcoma and longer for patients with other lymphomas. Initial extranodal manifestations were present in 24%, 51%, and 63% of patients with
Hodgkin's disease
,
lymphosarcoma
, and reticulum-cell sarcoma, respectively.

From 1949 to 1951, a total of 191,827 children in Puerto Rico were enrolled in a controlled trial of BCG vaccination. Of these children, 1 through 18 years of age, 82,269 were classified as reactors to tuberculin and 109,558 as nonreactors. Of the nonreactors, 31,856 refused vaccination, 27,338 were left unvaccinated as controls, and 50,674 were vaccinated with BCG. By the end of June 1969, a total of 37 cases of cancer had been diagnosed among the controls and 98 among the "vaccinees," yielding average annual rates of 7.2 and 10.3 cases per 100,000 population, respectively. The vaccinated group had a slight deficiency of leukemia cases and an excess of
lymphosarcoma
and
Hodgkin's disease
. The excess risk of cancer was concentrated among children age 10 through 18 on entry into the trial.

Thirty-two children with solid tumors (lymphangioma, fibrosarcoma, hepatocarcinoma, osteogenic sarcoma, rhabdomyosarcoma,
lymphosarcoma
, mesenchymoma, hepatoma, Ewing's sarcoma, reticulum cell sarcoma, neuroblastoma,
Hodgkin's disease
, and brain tumors) were studied for alterations in coagulation by means of platelet counts, platelet aggregation, thrombelastogram, procoagulant and antigenic factor VIII, fibrin split products, and antithrombin III level. Results indicated hypercoagulability as shown by abnormally short thrombelastograms and elevated factor VIII levels and platelet counts in approximately one-half of the group. With the exception of increased fibrin split products in a third of the patients, little laboratory or clinical evidence for disseminated intravascular coagulation was seen. Hypercoagulability, as noted in adult carcinoma patients, can also occur in childhood sarcoma patients.

The natural history, treatment, and results of 73 spinal cord compressions caused by malignant lymphomas are analyzed. It is found that the spinal cord compression caused by malignant lymphomas is generally a late manifestation of the illness, although primary or early involvements are occasionally seen. In our study, reticulum cell sarcoma is the most frequently variety followed by
Hodgkin's disease
and
lymphosarcoma
. The dorsal spinal cord is the most frequently involved segment and pain, weakness, and paresthesia are cardinal symptoms. Radiation treatment delivered in the early phase of the compression is commonly successful in reversing the neurologic symptoms and a dose above 2500 rads appears to be optimal for local control of disease. The low incidence of cerivcal cord compression in
Hodgkin's disease
patients may be related to frequent manifestation and irradiation of the neck nodes in these patients. Early detection of disease in the deep seated areas along the spinal cord and irradiation of these areas may prevent progression of tumor to the epidural space.

A study on the prevalence of cancer at autopsy in Chilean children with special reference to leukaemia, was made. In a series of 15300 consecutive autopsies of Chileans, 70% of deceased patients had an autopsy. Of these 15300 cases (male:female ratio 1:0.92) 6431 were children (0-15 years of age); 90% of deceased children patients had an autopsy. The autopsy population of children and adults is a homogeneous ethnic group, and exhibits a low socioeconomic level. Data on the 6431 post-mortem examinations (1945-1966) came from the atuopsy records of five hospitals (four of them are teaching hospitals) in the city of Santiago. Each one of the leukaemia and solid tumour cases were diagnosed microscopically. In the children population, 54.92% were males and 45.08% were females. Of the 6431 autopsies, 142 exhibited cancer (2.21%), 2.43% being male cases and 1.93% being female cases. The autopsy cases showed a marked excess of boys (73.92%) and girls (69.77%) under 1 year of age. The prevalence of major morphological groups of cancer was as follows: leukaemias 50.70%, intracranial and other neural neoplasms 25.35%, malignant lymphomas, including
Hodgkin's disease
, 14.07%, and mixed malignant tumours (Wilms' tumour) 4.93%. 4.93%. Acute leukaemias (42.96%), medulloblastoma (7.65%),
Hodgkin's disease
(6.34%), Wilms' tumour (4.93%), and
lymphosarcoma
(4.93%) were the most prevalent types of cancer. Leukaemia cases had a corrected male:female ratio of 1:0.61. The prevalence of leukaemia in the atuopsy population was 1.12%.

The study deals with an evaluation of activity of cellular antioxidative system enzymes such as glutathione reductase and glutathione: H2O2 peroxidase in blood plasma, leukocytes and lymphocytes of healthy subjects and patients with lymphoproliferative diseases such as
Hodgkin's disease
, acute leukemia ana
lymphosarcoma
. A decrease in enzymatic activity in blood and glutathione redox-system dysbalance was identified in the patients group.

Significant changes have been recorded in the concentration of sulfhydryl groups, histidine, lipoproteins, catalase activity, saponin resistance, and kinetics of chemiluminescent responses of red blood cells in lymphoma patients.
Lymphosarcoma
is characterized by changes in the structure and function of red blood cells at the early stage of the process, whereas in
lymphogranulomatosis
changes are observed with the disease progressing, when pronounced signs of tumor intoxication are noted and anemia is present. In
lymphosarcoma
patients an increase of peripheral blood mononuclears is recorded which expresses the erythroid differentiating antigens with the use of monoclonal antibodies against glycophorin A (ZAE-3) and human erythroblast antigen AG-EB (HAE-9). In
lymphogranulomatosis
patients it was not detected.

This study compares mortality rates for selected causes of death in Kanawha County, West Virginia, to rates reported in a number of geographically defined populations for 1950-1984. Specific conditions selected for study included cancers of the biliary passages and liver, the bladder and other urinary organs, and the central nervous system (CNS), as well as leukemia and aleukemia,
lymphosarcoma
and reticulosarcoma,
Hodgkin's disease
, and cancer of all other lymphopoietic tissue. The analysis made use of several techniques for the investigation of ecological data, including the modeling of rates using Poission regression. The primary findings of this study concern two subgroups of cancers of the lymphatic and hematopoietic tissue: (1) leukemia and aleukemia, and (2)
lymphosarcoma
and reticulosarcoma. For both subgroups of cancers, white male residents of Kanawha County show evidence of significantly elevated mortality rates over the 35-year period of this study.

The paper discusses the results of an epidemiologic case-control study dealing with the risk of development of acute nonlymphoblastic leukemia in patients treated with radio- or chemotherapy. Out of 165 patients with primary multiple metachronous tumors, primary
Hodgkin's disease
,
lymphosarcoma
and breast, ovarian and testicular cancer, 18 developed secondary acute nonlymphoblastic leukemia; in 13, the primary tumor had been
Hodgkin's disease
, in 4--breast cancer and in one--testicular cancer. Relative risk (RR) of acute nonlymphoblastic leukemia proved higher in patients who had undergone radiation (RR = 6.4) or chemotherapy (RR = 1.9). Combination of those two procedures carried a higher risk, too (RR = 5.9). Relative risk of acute nonlymphoblastic leukemia proved the highest in patients treated with adriamycin (11.3) and nitrogen mustard (9.9) and much lower for cyclophosphamide (RR = 1.5).

Histological and cytological preparations of the lymph nodes, spleen, bone marrow and other tumors from 140 patients with different variants of lymphosarcomas were subjected to a comparative clinicomorphological analysis. The data obtained were correlated to the WHO classification and the working formulation of non-
Hodgkin
's lymphomas intended for clinical use. It has been found desirable that the working formulation may be used for predicting the disease course and elaboration of the programs of
lymphosarcoma
treatment.
