We describe two unusual cases of squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix associated with prominent intratumoral deposition of amyloid. Most of the amyloid is deposited within and between the tumor islands, but some amyloid globules are intracellular. The amyloid shows immunoreactivity for keratin, suggesting that it is derived from cytokeratin intermediate filaments, similar to the pathogenesis of primary cutaneous amyloidosis. Tumor-related amyloidosis is a heterogeneous but distinctive subgroup of amyloidosis, including cytokeratin-derived amyloid deposited within squamous or squamous-related tumors as in the present cases, polypeptide-derived amyloid associated with endocrine tumors, and systemic inflammation-associated amyloid (AA protein) as observed rarely in Hodgkin's disease and renal cell carcinoma.

Mesenteric tumor emboli have been rarely reported in the literature. Tumors associated with this phenomenon include aortic angiosarcomas, pulmonary neoplasms, Hodgkin's lymphoma, and renal cell carcinoma. In most cases, presentation is dramatic and death is rapid. We present a case of mesenteric tumor emboli from an aortic source that had a more subtle presentation with recurrent abdominal pain and leukocytosis.

Endobronchial metastases of extrapulmonary malignant tumors are very rare and they appear in 1-2% of all the pulmonary metastases cases. By their endoscopic presentation, they are similar to primary bronchogenic carcinoma. Eleven patients with endobronchial metastases were presented, 8 male and 3 female. The average age was 58.27 years (from 37 to 72 years). Primary renal carcinoma existed in 2 patients. The one was operated 5 years before the metastases appeared in bronchus, and the metastases in bronchial wall contributed to the discovery of primary tumor in the other patient. Endobronchial metastases appeared in 3 patients, 2 years after the surgery of malignant colonic or rectal tumor, and in fourth patient it appeared 5 years after the surgery. One female patient sustained mastectomy and the radiation therapy was performed 11 years before the bronchial metastases occurred and the other female patient had the disease revealed a year ago and the polytherapy was performed. In the female patient with non Hodgkin Lymphoma, the change in bronchus was revealed simultaneously as the primary disease. Endobronchial metastases appeared in 2 patients two years after the surgery of malignant melanoma. The disease diagnosis was set by clinical-radiological examination, by endoscopy and by the comparison of histopathologic finding of primary carcinoma and metastases.

We have identified the CD95 system as a key mediator of chemotherapy-induced apoptosis in leukemia and neuroblastoma cells. Here, we report that sensitivity of various solid tumor cell lines for drug-induced cell death corresponds to activation of the CD95 system. Upon drug treatment, strong induction of CD95 ligand (CD95-L) and caspase activity were found in chemosensitive tumor cells (Hodgkin, Ewing's sarcoma, colon carcinoma and small cell lung carcinoma) but not in tumor cells which responded poorly to drug treatment (breast carcinoma and renal cell carcinoma). Blockade of CD95 using F(ab')2 anti-CD95 antibody fragments markedly reduced drug-induced apoptosis, suggesting that drug-triggered apoptosis depended on CD95-L/receptor interaction. Moreover, drug treatment induced CD95 expression, thereby increasing sensitivity for CD95-induced apoptosis. Drug-induced apoptosis critically depended on activation of caspases (ICE/Ced-3-like proteases) since the broad-spectrum inhibitor of caspases zVAD-fmk strongly reduced drug-mediated apoptosis. The prototype substrate of caspases, poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase, was cleaved upon drug treatment, suggesting that CD95-L triggered autocrine/paracrine death via activation of caspases. Our data suggest that chemosensitivity of solid tumor cells depends on intact apoptosis pathways involving activation of the CD95 system and processing of caspases. Our findings may have important implications for new treatment approaches to increase sensitivity and to overcome resistance of solid tumors.

We report on a 65-year-old white woman who was hospitalized because of symptoms of an acute adrenocortical insufficiency. A CT scan revealed the presence of a large mass in the left kidney that infiltrated the adrenal gland. Fine needle aspiration cytology of the mass under imaging control failed to achieve a correct diagnosis, and nephrectomy was undertaken with a preoperative diagnosis of renal cell carcinoma. However, the frozen section reveals a neoplasm of large lymphoid cells with a diffuse growth pattern. Immunohistochemistry confirms the B-cell nature of the neoplasm (CD20+). The final diagnosis was non-Hodgkin B-cell high grade centroblastic lymphoma (KIEL classification). Postoperative studies failed to show lymph node or bone marrow infiltration by neoplastic cells. We found reports on only 60 malignant lymphomas, considered to be primary to the kidney. They usually affect middle-aged people, can be diagnosed with imaging techniques, and seem to show a better prognosis than other types of lymphoma.

Small amounts of free DNA circulate in both healthy and diseased human plasma/serum, and increased concentrations of DNA are present in the plasma of cancer patients. Characteristics of tumour DNA have been found in genetic material extracted from the plasma of cancer patients. These features include decreased strand stability and the presence of specific oncogene, tumour suppressor gene and microsatellite alterations. Point mutations of the ras genes have been detected in the plasma DNA of patients suffering from haematopoetic malignancies, colorectal and pancreatic cancer, sometimes prior to clinical diagnosis. Rearranged immunoglobulin heavy chain DNA has been found in the plasma of patients with non-Hodgkins lymphoma and acute B cell leukaemia. Microsatellite instability, expressed either as a new allele or a loss of one allele (LOH) occurs in the plasma and serum DNA of patients suffering from head and neck, lung and renal cell cancer. The results obtained in many different cancers have opened a new research area indicating that plasma DNA might eventually be a suitable target for the development of non-invasive diagnostic, prognostic and follow-up tests for cancer.

We herein report a case of renal cell carcinoma coexisting with malignant lymphoma. A 69-year-old male complained of an obstruction of the right nasal cavity due to a solid tumor in the paranasal sinuses. A biopsy of the tumor revealed diffuse, large cell and B cell type non-Hodgkin lymphoma. At the same time, just before the patient was scheduled to receive therapy, a left renal cell carcinoma was found. He therefore underwent a left radical nephrectomy.

In the majority of presented cases persisted certain diagnostic perplexities even after the careful investigations were performed, which required surgical exploration. For example, carcinomatous pericarditis as the sequel of metastasis from occult thyroid carcinoma and two cases of double malignity (papillary carcinoma and Hodgkin's lymphoma of the thyroid), retroperitoneal leiomyosarcoma and the clear cells renal carcinoma. All the cases were not successfully solved until the application of highly sophisticated and precise methods of immunohistochemical staining, which without a mistake confirmed our assumed histopathologic diagnosis. Metastatic lesion of folicular thyroid carcinoma in the adrenal gland should be mentioned because of the long remission period of 15 years following total thyroidectomy and neck irradiation during the primary therapy of thyroid carcinoma. It is very significant to point out that pathologic disorders such as undifferentiated neoplasm, strange inflammatory conditions, endocrine proliferative lesions deserve special attention because in certain cases consultative approach is necessary for obtaining the definite finding that can in some degree histoprognostically predict the outcome of pathologic process.

Primary renal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) is unusual, in contrast to the frequent renal involvement in disseminated NHL. We report a case of follicular lymphoma presenting initially as a renal mass. In the literature, twenty-seven similar cases have been described since 1980. The median age at diagnosis is 64 years with a male predominance. Clinical and radiological findings generally evoke renal carcinoma. Histologically, tumors are usually large B-cell lymphomas. The existence of renal non-Hodgkin lymphoma mimicking renal carcinoma must be recognized. Such lymphomas can either be primitive or be nodal with a renal presentation. Nephrectomy followed by chemotherapy permits long disease free survival.
