The teratogenic potential of the fungicide dinocap was evaluated in CD-1 mice. Pregnant mice were dosed by intubation with dinocap in corn oil on gestation days 7-16. Doses used were 0, 5, 10, 20, 40, 80, and 120 mg/kg/day, based on day 6 weight. Dams were killed on day 18, at which time fetuses were counted, weighed, and preserved for necropsy or skeletal examination. The highest dose killed 80% of the dams dosed, while 29% of the dams in the 80 mg/kg group died during dosing. There was no dose-related maternal mortality at lower doses. Net maternal weight gain was affected only at 80 mg/kg/day. There were no live fetuses at 120 mg/kg/day. The number of live fetuses per litter was decreased and resorptions increased at 80 mg/kg. Dose-related decreases in gravid uterus weight and fetal weight were significant at all doses of dinocap. Cleft palate was found in fetuses at 5(1/234; 0.4%), 20(46/195; 23.6%), 40(140/185; 75.5%), and 80(63/85; 74.1%) mg/kg/day. There was a dose-related increase in supernumerary ribs and a low frequency of exencephaly and umbilical hernia at high doses. This study shows that dinocap is teratogenic in the CD-1 mouse at doses well below those causing maternal toxicity.

This study was performed to evaluate the effects of prenatal development of rats. Females were exposed to carbendazim by gavage every day on days 6-15 of gestation at doses 8, 35, 160 mg/kg b.w. Carbendazim administered at doses of 35 and 160 mg/kg was associated with significant maternal toxicity, embryonal lethality, congenital defects, and retarded fetal development. It produced encephalocele, umbilical hernia, missing or shorter tail, and internal malformations of brain, kidneys, and skeletal malformations of ribs, arch, and vertebrae. NOEL for the dam and fetus in our study was 8 mg/kg/day.

Herein, a versatile bilayer system, composed by a polypropylene (PP) mesh and a covalently bonded poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) hydrogel, is reported. The cell adhesion mechanism was successfully modulated by controlling the architecture of the hydrogel in terms of duration of PNIPAAm grafting time, crosslinker content, and temperature of material exposure in PBS solutions (below and above the LCST of PNIPAAm). The best in vitro results with fibroblast (COS-1) and epithelial (MCF-7) cells was obtained with a mesh modified with a porous iPP-g-PNIPAAm bilayer system, prepared via PNIPAAm grafting for 2 h at the lowest N,N'-methylene bis(acrylamide) (MBA) concentration (1 mM). Under these conditions, the detachment of the fibroblast-like cells was 50% lower than that of the control, after 7 days of cell incubation, which represents a high de-adhesion of cells in a short period. Moreover, the whole system showed excellent stability in dry or wet media, proving that the thermosensitive hydrogel was well adhered to the polymer surface, after PP fibre activation by cold plasma. This study provides new insights on the development of anti-adherent meshes for abdominal hernia repair.
