The intestinal post-operative bridle represents the third most important etiology of obstructions at the clinic of the University Hospital of Dakar, behind hernia strangulations and the volvulus of the digestive tube. Between 1970 and 1989, a retrospective study has led to a sample of 79 patients with post-operative bridle obstructions. The group was made of 47 women and 32 men between 17 and 84 years of age. Stomach ache was by far the most common functional symptomatology, followed by the stoppage of the transit and vomiting. In most cases palpation revealed the presence of tympanism. For almost all the patients, the abdomen without preparation revealed either a hydroaeric level or a diffuse grey area. The initial intervention concerned mainly gynecological affections or pathologies of appendicular type. The resection of the bridles was carried out in most cases. There were 10 deaths. The intestinal obstructions by post-operative bridles continue to be a surgical emergency still characterized by a high mortality rate. The late consultation of the patients, often received when presenting considerable visceral deficiency, is one of the main causes of the high rate of fatalities.

This review describes the morphological, phytochemical and pharmacological properties of Cinnamomum subavenium (Lauraceae). The plant grows wild in southern Mainland China, Burma, Cambodia, Taiwan, Malaysia and Indonesia. This plant is recorded as having long been used to treat carcinomatous swelling, stomach ache, chest pain, abdominal pain, hernia, diarrhoea, rheumatism, nausea and vomiting. This article enumerates an overview of phytochemical and pharmacological aspects that is useful to researchers for further exploration for the necessary development of this potential herb.

In this study, we aimed to present that incarcerated Spigelian hernia is an important cause of acute abdomen although it is rare and accounts for 1-2% of all abdominal wall hernias. Spigelian hernia arises from a defect in the aponeurosis of the transversus abdominis muscle, also known as the Spiegel fascia. This case analysis aims to present a Spigelian hernia case in which the sigmoid colon is incarcerated. The patient was referred to our emergency surgery clinic complaining of severe abdominal pain and a palpable mass in the left quadrant of the abdomen, presenting tenderness on the front abdominal wall. The symptoms suddenly emerged approximately eight hours ago before the patient was admitted to the hospital. The patient was taken into surgery after the ultrasonography (US) and computed tomography (CT) results suggested a preliminary diagnosis of incarcerated Spigelian hernia for which polypropylene mesh repair was performed. No recurrence was identified in the patient's control examination performed 22 months later. Incarcerated Speigel hernia should be considered as a cause for patients developing sudden stomach ache and mass, causing tenderness on the front abdominal wall for which mesh repair should be performed.
