Canine leishmaniasis, a generally fatal parasitic disease, was diagnosed in 2 dogs with a medical history of foreign travel, lymphadenopathy, emaciation, anorexia, intermittent fever, and cutaneous lesions. Clinically, hyperproteinemia, proteinuria, azotemia, and glomerulopathy were evident. Isolation of Leishmania species was done using Schneider's Drosophila medium. Syrian hamsters were used for infectivity studies. Clear taxonomic identification was done biochemically by isoenzyme analysis and comparison of zymogram banding patterns with 6 World Health Organization reference strains. Based on the geographic origin of affected dogs, clinicopathologic presentation, visceralization with hepatosplenomegaly in hamsters, and isoenzyme analysis, a diagnosis of Leishmania leishmania infantum was made. This study, representing the first taxonomic identification of an isolate from canine leishmaniasis, demonstrates the zoonotic and epidemiologic implications of this disease.

The paper presents multiorgan manifestations of AIDS syndrome in an infant at the age of 8 months. The child was admitted to the Clinic with enteric disorder, anaemia, hepatosplenomegaly and pneumonia. The diagnosis of those anomalies and the treatment of pneumonia took much time. Infection with CMV was recognized but, despite the treatment and elimination of the virus, the child's condition did not improve and general emaciation progressed. The diagnosis of AIDS syndrome was based upon indicator illnesses: chronic recurrent pneumonia, cytomegaly and emaciation syndrome as well as upon the results of additional examinations, first of all including the presence of p24 antigen in the serum. In children with chronic diseases and manifesting non-specific multiorgan symptoms we should take into consideration AIDS syndrome in the differential diagnosis.

A total of 51 inpatients having prolonged low grade irregular fever with anaemia, hepatosplenomegaly, emaciation and other allied features were evaluated by findings of haematologic, seroimmunologic, microscopic examination for LD body and culture for L. donovani. The study was done during the period from September' 1999 to January' 2000. Bone marrow or splenic aspirates were examined for LD bodies and those samples were cultured in modified NNN media following a standard method. Out of 51 samples, 36 (70.5%) were positive for LD bodies in stained smears and 38 (74.5%) were positive in culture. The mean time of culture positivity was 5 +/- 2 days. Specific antileishmanial antibody were detected by Immunochromatography Test (ICT) in all 38 confirmed cases, whereas Aldehyde test (AT) were negative in 3 such cases. ICT was positive in 1 and AT in 7 cases where no parasite could be detected. So, sensitivity of ICT was 100% with a specificity of 92.3% and sensitivity of AT was 92.1% with a specificity of 46.1%.

Disseminated visceral coccidiosis (DVC) caused by Eimeria spp. was recognized as a disease entity in captive sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis) and whooping cranes (Grus americana) in the late 1970s. While most avian species of Eimeria inhabit the intestinal tract of its host, the crane eimerians, Eimeria reichenowi and Eimeria gruis, invade and multiply systemically and complete their development in both digestive and respiratory tracts. In DVC, cranes, especially chicks, may succumb to acute infections resulting in hepatitis, bronchopneumonia, myocarditis, splenitis, and enteritis. Cranes may also develop chronic, subclinical infections characterized by granulomatous nodules in various organs and tissues. This paper reviews the pathology and pathogenicity of natural and experimental DVC in sandhill and whooping cranes. Naturally infected birds appeared clinically normal, but progressive weakness, emaciation, greenish diarrhea, and recumbency before death were observed in birds administered doses > or = 10 x 10(3) sporulated oocysts per os. At necropsy, naturally infected birds had nodules in the mucosa of the oral cavity and the esophagus, and in thoracic and abdominal viscera. Experimentally infected birds necropsied less than 7 days after infection (a.i.) had no gross lesions. Birds examined later had hepatosplenomegaly, liver mottling, lung congestion and consolidation with frothy fluid in airways, and turgid intestinal tracts with hyperemic mucosa. From 28 days a.i., grossly visible granulomatous nodules were seen in the esophagus, heart, liver, cloaca, and eyelids. By light microscopy, the basic host response was a granulomatous inflammation with non-suppurative vasculitis affecting many organs and tissues. With time, multifocal aggregates of mononuclear cells, many laden with asexual coccidial stages, increased in size and number. Widespread merogony resulted in morbidity and death, particularly in birds administered 20 x 10(3) sporulated oocysts. Ultrastructural examination revealed developing asexual coccidian stages in the cytoplasm of large lymphocytes or monocytes within a parasitophorous vacuole, often indenting the nucleus. Oocysts and gametocytes were found in the intestines by 12 days a.i., and in the esophagus, trachea, bronchi, and lung by 14 days a.i., indicating that crane eimerians can complete their life cycle at these sites. Thus, DVC in cranes could be a useful animal model for the study of eimerian extra-intestinal stages and the evaluation of potential systemic anticoccidial drugs.

An outbreak of peste des petits ruminants (PPR) was recorded in Kalubia province, Egypt in 2006, affecting a large population of migratory goats and sheep over a huge geographical area. Epidemiological, clinical and laboratory investigations were performed. Diseased animals showed pyrexia, erosive stomatitis, enteritis and bronchopneumonia. Clinical manifestations were more severe in goats. The overall morbidity, cumulative mortality and case fatality rates were 26.1%, 10.5% and 40.2%, respectively, and were significantly higher in young animals. Post-mortem examination showed emaciation, congested mucous membranes, lymphadenopathy, hepatosplenomegaly, haemorrhagic necrosis of the abomasal and intestinal mucosa, pleurisy and lung consolidation. Forty oculonasal swabs and 243 serum samples from diseased animals were tested for PPR antigen and antibodies using immunocapture and competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA), respectively. PPR antigen was detected in 30/40 (75%) of the swabs. PPR virus was identified in inoculated Vero cells using immunocapture ELISA and fluorescent antibody technique (FAT); 33/40 (82.5%) and 36/40 (90%) samples were positive, respectively. Of 243 sera, 154 (63.4%) contained PPR antibodies. Circulation of PPR among the migratory sheep and goat flocks was demonstrated. Strict serosurveillance and monitoring of PPR with vaccination of migratory flocks at borders is required for effective control of the disease.

Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) is a severe systemic mycosis, endemic in Latin America and highly prevalent in Brazil, where it ranks eighth as a mortality cause among infectious and parasitic diseases in humans. The disease in animals has been little explored. It is observed that armadillos can harbor the fungus at high frequencies, although the active disease has not been well documented in this wild mammal. Dogs are susceptible to experimental infection, and the naturally acquired PCM-disease was reported only recently in a dog from Brazil. The present work reports the second case of naturally acquired PCM in a 6-year-old female dog that presented emaciation, lymphadenomegaly, and hepatosplenomegaly. Biochemical and pulmonary radiographic evaluation did not reveal any abnormalities. PCM was diagnosed by clinical findings, culturing, immunohistochemistry, and histopathology of popliteal lymph node. The fungus was recovered from popliteal lymph node, and the molecular analysis showed respective sequencing similarities of 99 and 100% for 803 nucleotides of the Gp43 gene and 592 nucleotides from the ITS-5.8S region of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis. Immunohistochemistry revealed severe lymphadenitis and presented numerous yeasts, which reacted against the gp43 antibody. Histopathology revealed a severe granulomatous lymphadenitis associated with numerous single or multiple budding yeasts. After diagnosis, the dog was successfully treated with itraconazol for 2 years. Veterinarians should be aware of the importance of considering PCM for differential diagnosis, especially in dogs from PCM-endemic areas, whose monophagocytic system involvement is evident.
