This article presents electronmicroscopy evidence of retrovirus-like particles with bar shaped cores in salivary and prostate glands as well as testicles of 2 acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients. The 1st case, a 38-year old black male homosexual, presented in 1982 with diarrhea, malabsorption, and weight loss. In the following 1 1/2 years, he experienced recurrent Candida esophagitis, cutaneous and pulmonary Kaposi's sarcoma, Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, and cytomegalovirus. Autopsy in 1984 revealed residual Kaposi's sarcoma, disseminated cytomegalovirus, and M avium-intracellulare. The 2nd case, a 31-year old white male homosexual, presented in 1984 with Pneumocystis carinii penumonia and subsequently developed persistent fever,
hepatomegaly
, headaches,
blurred vision
, progressive liver function deterioration, and disseminated histoplasmosis infection. Autopsy in 1984 revealed an overwhelming disseminated histoplasmosis infection. Tissues taken at postmortem were examined by electron microscopy. Particles that conformed with the morphologic characteristics of AIDS retrovirus (a size of about 140 nm, a round shape with a double membrane, and an elongated core) were detected in the prostate gland of patient 2 and in the salivary glands and testes of both patients. This finding suggests that saliva and semen may be body fluids by which transmission of the AIDS virus occurs.

The authors reported a case of niclofolan intoxication occurred during the trial of clonorchiasis treatment. The case, a 15 years old Korean schoolboy, took niclofolan(Bilevon(R)) of total 473 mg(11 mg/kg) in 11 divided doses during 20 days. And the case suffered from neurologic symptoms such as severe headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting,
blurred vision
, papilledema, retinal hemorrhage, an epsiode of seizure attack and elevated intracranial pressure, and hepatotoxic symptoms such as
hepatomegaly
, increased serum transaminases, and shoulder pain, excessive sweating and weight loss. Therapy was concentrated to the management of the elevated intracranial pressure. Hepatotoxic manifestations subsided within one month. The clinical signs related to elevated intracranial pressure persisted two months. Body weight regained after 2 months. And the symptoms of headache, dizziness and vomiting were complained intermittently until 4 months after onset. However, no subsequent clinical problems related with this episode has been noted until this record.

A 76-year-old man presented with leukostasis syndrome, including oculodynia,
blurred vision
, and visual field defects, due to mantle cell lymphoma, prolymphocytoid variant, with marked leukocytosis, 1227 x 10(9)/l. He had splenomegaly but no lymphadenopathy or
hepatomegaly
. The tumor cells were CD5+, CD19+, CD20+, FMC-7+, and kappa light chain restricted. Immunohistochemistry showed expression of p53 and of cyclin D1. Fluorescent in situ hybridization demonstrated t(11;14) with translocation between CYCLIN D1 and the immunoglobulin heavy-chain genes. The patient received leukapheresis and aggressive chemotherapy, but the leukocyte count remained above 100 x 10(9)/l. The patient's condition rapidly deteriorated with lymphomatous infiltration of his lungs and soft tissues, and he expired 6 months after diagnosis. While it is known that mantle cell lymphoma may have a leukemic phase, the degree of leukocytosis in this case exceeds that previously reported in the literature and resulted in a clinical syndrome of leukostasis.
