virus (HBV) infection the authors have met some difficulties in the interpretation of findings of three biopsies which showed the presence of hemosiderine and ferritin deposits in hepatocytes. The lack of cells with the appearance of "ground glass", that is, ground glass hepatocytes which are one of the important features of HBV infection and aberration from the standard features in some histochemical stainings are noticed in all three biopsies. Since only few authors have noticed the same problem, it is possible that these results open new ways in the study of pathogenesis of HBV infection in the liver and its relationship with

We evaluated the prevalence of
hepatitis B
virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in 78 Italian patients with hereditary hemochromatosis as well as the relation between HCV antibody (anti-HCV) status,
hepatitis B
surface antigen (HBsAg) and liver histology. None of the patients had been transfused or ever consumed more than 60 g of alcohol per day. Eighteen showed histological signs of chronic hepatitis, active cirrhosis was present in 12, chronic active hepatitis in 4 and chronic persistent hepatitis in 2. Liver fibrosis or cirrhosis without inflammatory activity was observed in 31 subjects, whereas liver histology was normal except for iron overload in 18. The prevalence of HBsAg in the whole series was 5% and of anti-HCV was 20.5%. The prevalence of HBsAg and anti-HCV was significantly higher in the chronic hepatitis group than in the fibrosis/cirrhosis (p = 0.01) and the normal groups (p < 0.01). Fourteen of 18 hereditary hemochromatosis patients with chronic hepatitis were HBsAg (4) or anti-HCV (10) positive and all the latter subgroup had HCV-RNA in their serum as shown by the polymerase chain reaction. Although most of the patients with associated chronic hepatitis had cirrhosis, their serum ferritin levels and amount of mobilizable
iron
were significantly lower than those of the fibrosis/cirrhosis group (p < 0.01). This indicates that hepatitis viral infection acts synergistically with

in accelerating the development of liver damage.

Inhibition of human hepatocellular carcinoma (PLC/PRF/5 and Hep3B) or hepatoblastoma (Hep G2) cell lines by inclusion of deferoxamine mesylate (desferrioxamine) (DFX) in the culture medium was evaluated. When PLC/PRF/5 cells were maintained for 7 days in 30 or 60 microM DFX, the cell number was decreased by 30-60%, little or no alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) was produced, and supernatant endpoint dilution titers of
hepatitis B
surface antigen (HBsAg) were reduced 1-2 logs. PLC/PRF/5 cells maintained for 7 days without DFX (simultaneous controls) grew to confluence, produced AFP that reached 10-60 ng/ml in the supernate, and the HBsAg titer remained constant or increased 1 log. Similar effects were observed in Hep3B and Hep G2 cells maintained in DFX (except that Hep G2 cells do not produce HBsAg), compared to simultaneous control cells grown in the absence of DFX. The growth of a human embryonic lung fibroblast cell line (Wl 38) was not significantly inhibited by DFX, although it grew at a slower rate than simultaneous control cells grown without DFX. Subsequent growth in FeSO4 of PLC/PRF/5, Hep3B, and Hep G2 cells that previously had been maintained in DFX did not reverse the effects of DFX. PLC/PRF/5 cells were also inhibited when maintained in medium containing equimolar concentrations of DFX and FeCl3 and in medium containing equimolar concentrations of DFX and FeSO4. PLC/PRF/5 cells were not inhibited by maintenance in up to 60 microM of another chelating agent that has a similar affinity for
iron
, calcium disodium versenate (EDTA). These studies show that DFX inhibits the growth of human hepatocellular carcinoma and hepatoblastoma cell lines regardless of the presence (PLC/PRF/5, Hep3B) or absence (Hep G2) of integrated
hepatitis B
virus DNA. The findings also suggest that the inhibition may have been due to mechanisms other than

chelation.

or C, parathormone (PTH), and aluminum levels. Red cell production was expressed as milliliters of red blood cell increase per day per kilogram of body weight. For patients receiving EPO, hematologic response was normalized to 50 U/kg/dialysis. Of the patients on oral

intravenously, 50% had a good response (hematocrit greater than or equal to 30%). All patients treated with EPO responded well, except for one patient who did not respond to doses of EPO up to 200 U/kg/dialysis. The response to intravenous

dextran was more rapid than the response to oral

or EPO. Nutritional factors (serum albumin and protein catabolic rate), serologic evidence of hepatitis, elevated PTH levels, or elevated aluminum levels did not significantly affect the response to
