Recently, oral implantology became rich with new means to improve the interrelations between the alloplastic implants, the surrounding tissue and the human organism: the regeneration led by the tissues represents one of the most encouraging examples. There are numerous materials offered to us by the reabsorbable membranes (in cellulose

, in polytetrafluoroethylene, in vycril, in titanium) and by the absorbable ones: dura mater, fascia latae, synthetic polymers (PEG, PBT), collagen. All the membranes applied on the scratched osseous area on the submerged implant maintain space favourable to the growth of new bone (tent effect) impeding the epithelial proliferation and migration. The collagen membrane appeared to be the best material, fitting well with a barrier effect; exempt from septic complications with gingival dehiscences often observed when non absorbable materials are used. The experience has shown that the association between reabsorbable membranes and osseous grafts, either autologous or heterologous, human or animal, gives the best advantages for the neo-osteogenesis. Obviously these materials have to be submitted to a special physico-chemical treatment in order to prevent organic pathologies like
hepatitis
, AIDS, and more recently the Creutzfeldt-Jacob syndrome or BSE.

A disease similar to ulcerative colitis in humans has been identified in cotton-top tamarins (CTTs) in captivity. The clinical signs include weight loss, diarrhea, and rectal bleeding with the pathological features and biochemical abnormalities of ulcerative colitis. Approximately 25 to 40% of these animals develop colon cancer after 2 to 5 years of captivity. An infectious etiology has been proposed; however, no microbial agent to date has been identified. Helicobacter spp. have been associated with enterocolitis and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in humans and animals. Infection with Helicobacter pylori or Helicobacter mustelae is associated with an increased risk of gastric adenocarcinoma and lymphoma of the mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue. , hepatic adenomas, and hepatocellular carcinomas in susceptible strains of mice. The aim of this study was to assess a colony of CTTs with a high incidence of IBD and colon cancer for the presence of colonic Helicobacter spp. A fusiform, gram-negative bacterium with bipolar flagella and periplasmic fibers was isolated from the feces of CTTs. Further studies are needed to elucidate the role of this novel Helicobacter sp. in the pathogenesis of ulcerative colitis and colonic adenocarcinoma in CTTs.

The antiphospholipid syndrome is characterized by clinical evidence of arterial or venous thrombosis, thrombocytopaenia, recurrent fetal loss and repeated positivity of antiphospholipid autoantibodies. The association of antiphospholipid syndrome with the development of adrenal failure has been reported in more than 40 patients in the last 20 years, mostly due to bilateral cortical haemorrhage or thrombosis of adrenal vessels. The presence of antibodies against adrenal cortex was never documented in these patients. Here we report a case of recurrent thrombophlebitis, acute adrenal failure, and chronic hepatitis occurring in a young man found to have antiphospholipid antibodies and lupus anticoagulant. Autoantibodies against adrenal cortex were detected and abdominal ultrasonography showed morphologically normal adrenals. Mild thrombocytopaenia, Coomb's positive anaemia, increase in alanine- and aspartate-aminotransferases and increase in urinary protein excretion were found. Autoantibodies against liver/kidney microsomes were positive and liver biopsy was compatible with autoimmune

, fludrocortisone and warfarin. Dilated cardiomyopathy was revealed one year later and coronarography did not document any occlusive coronary disease. Three years later, titres of autoantibodies, including those directed towards the adrenal cortex, were increased and others, previously absent, were detected. Nevertheless, the patient's clinical conditions seemed unchanged. At this time, an abdominal CT scan showed adrenal dysmorphisms with bilateral annular calcifications and central hypodensities suggesting previous bilateral adrenal haematomas. The hypercoagulable state that occurs in antiphospholipid syndrome can induce a localized inflammatory response generated by tissue injury, with a consequent release of intracellular antigens and antibodies production. Consequently, tissue-specific autoantibodies positivity may persist until the cells involved in antigen production are completely destroyed.

There has been a recent renewed interest in certain aspects of cardiopulmonary bypass employing extracorporeal circulation. Several areas have received special attention. Among these is the institution of extracorporeal circulation using a percutaneous technique for circulatory assistance during high-risk percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty. A national registry has been established to review and monitor results using this percutaneous technique. Several recent developments in the delivery of cardioplegia during ischemic arrest have stimulated investigative efforts. In particular, the delivery of cardioplegia in a retrograde manner through the coronary sinus has proved an effective and useful adjunct to myocardial protection during cardiopulmonary bypass with extracorporeal circulation. A newer investigative technique employing only warm cardioplegia delivered primarily through the retrograde coronary sinus route seems to offer some promise in providing optimal myocardial protection while minimizing hemorrhagic complications and other cold-induced myocardial injury. virus (MHV). Analysis of the cloned gene revealed approximately 85% sequence identity to HE proteins of MHV and approximately 60% identity to the corresponding esterase of bovine coronavirus. The HE protein exhibited acetylesterase activity with synthetic substrates p-nitrophenyl
acetate
, alpha-naphthyl

, and 4-methylumbelliferyl
acetate
. In contrast to other viral esterases, no activity was detectable with natural substrates containing 9-O-acetylated sialic acids. Furthermore, PV esterase was unable to remove influenza C virus receptors from human erythrocytes, indicating a substrate specificity different from HEs of influenza C virus and bovine coronavirus. Solid-phase binding assays revealed that purified PV was unable to bind to sialic acid-containing glycoconjugates like bovine submaxillary mucin, mouse alpha1 macroglobulin or bovine brain extract. Because of the close relationship to MHV, possible implications on the substrate specificity of MHV esterases are suggested.

By comparative analysis of the hemagglutinin-esterase (HE) protein of mouse
hepatitis
virus strain S (MHV-S) and the HE protein of influenza C virus, we found major differences in substrate specificities. In striking contrast to the influenza C virus enzyme, the MHV-S esterase was unable to release
acetate
from bovine submandibulary gland mucin. Furthermore, MHV-S could not remove influenza C virus receptors from erythrocytes. Analysis with free sialic acid derivatives revealed that the MHV-S HE protein specifically de-O-acetylates 5-N-acetyl-4-O-acetyl sialic acid (Neu4, 5Ac2) but not 5-N-acetyl-9-O-acetyl sialic acid (Neu5,9Ac2), which is the major substrate for esterases of influenza C virus and bovine coronaviruses. In addition, the MHV-S esterase converted glycosidically bound Neu4,5Ac2 of guinea pig serum glycoproteins to Neu5Ac. By expression of the MHV esterase with recombinant vaccinia virus and incubation with guinea pig serum, we demonstrated that the viral HE possesses sialate-4-O-acetylesterase activity. In addition to observed enzymatic activity, MHV-S exhibited affinity to guinea pig and horse serum glycoproteins. Binding required sialate-4-O-acetyl groups and was abolished by chemical de-O-acetylation. Since Neu4,5Ac2 has not been identified in mice, the nature of potential substrates and/or secondary receptors for MHV-S in the natural host remains to be determined. The esterase of MHV-S is the first example of a viral enzyme with high specificity and affinity toward 4-O-acetylated sialic acids.
