Fatal Yersinia pseudotuberculosis infection was diagnosed in 3 bushbabies (Galago crassicaudatus) in a large prosimian colony. The clinical signs were diarrhea, dyspnea, hyperthermia, dehydration, and lethargy. Histologically, the disease was characterized by lesions of ulcerative enterocolitis, necrotizing
hepatitis
,
splenitis
, lymphadenitis, and nonsuppurative pneumonitis.

Visceral toxoplasmosis was diagnosed in 23 mynahs (Acridotheres) imported from Mexico, which resulted in the death of all birds in the shipment. The affected birds were inappetent and depressed and had ruffled feathers before death. Gross alterations included mottled, enlarged livers with multiple diffuse subcapsular white foci, congested lungs, mottled spleens, and thickened air sacs. Microscopic alterations were multifocal granulomatous
hepatitis
, pneumonitis, diffuse
splenitis
, focal mononuclear myocarditis, and airsacculitis. Foamy macrophages in affected areas of the livers contained 8-10 protozoan organisms 1-3 nm in diameter. Similar organisms were present in affected spleens. The organisms were identified with special stains and electron microscopy as Toxoplasma gondii. Human infection was diagnosed in the caretaker by an attending physician. He was treated with pyrimethamine and apparently recovered.

Systemic pathological alterations were studied in thirty-seven autopsied patients with Kawasaki disease. Systemic vasculitis was the most characteristic pathological finding and was present in all the patients. In addition to the vasculitis, there was a high incidence of inflammatory lesions in various organs and tissues: in the heart, endocarditis, myocarditis, and pericarditis; in the digestive system, stomatitis, sialoduct-adenitis, catarrhal enteritis,
hepatitis
, cholangitis, pancreatitis, and pancreas ductitis; in the respiratory system, bronchitis and segmental interstitial pneumonia; in the urinary system, focal interstitial nephritis, cystitis, and prostatitis; in the nervous system, aseptic leptomeningitis, choriomeningitis, gangliontis, and neuritis; in the hematopoietic system, lymphadenitis,
splenitis
, and thymitis. Dermatitis, panniculitis or myositis were also observed in some patients. Therefore, Kawasaki disease is a systemic inflammatory disease which mainly affects the cardiovascular system. These systemic inflammatory lesions are considered to correspond to the variegated clinical manifestaitions. The relationship between Kawasaki disease and infantile polyarteritis nodosa (IPN) were discussed, based on the clinicopathological characteristics.

Three 13- to 18-day-old whooping cranes (Grus americana) and a 9-year-old whooping crane died in outdoor pens at the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center. The deaths were associated with an overwhelming systemic infection by an intracellular protozoan parasite, which resulted in enteritis, granulomatous bronchopneumonia,
hepatitis
,
splenitis
, and myocarditis. The clinical, histopathologic, and electron microscopic findings were similar to those in sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis) at the Patuxent Center found to be infected with Eimeria reichenowi and E gruis. Since these eimerian species also parasitize wild whooping cranes, this parasite might be an important pathogenic agent for this species.

Bobwhite quails (Colinus virginianus) were inoculated intratracheally, intraperitoneally, or subcutaneously with Indiana C adenovirus at 1, 3, 6, or 9 weeks of age. Mortality rates were 33-100% in quails inoculated at 1 or 3 weeks of age and 0-10% in quails inoculated at 6 or 9 weeks of age. Gross and histologic lesions included necrotizing tracheitis and bronchitis with pneumonia, necrotizing
hepatitis
and
splenitis
, and lymphoid depletion of the bursa of Fabricius; these were consistent with quail bronchitis. Indiana C is highly pathogenic in bobwhite quails and cannot be recommended as a vaccine to prevent quail bronchitis.

Toxoplasmosis was diagnosed in a free-ranging wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) from West Virginia (USA) in June 1993. Gross findings included emaciation, splenomegaly, multifocal necrotizing
hepatitis
and
splenitis
, and crusting dermatitis on the head and neck. Histologically, multifocal necrosis with mononuclear inflammation was present in kidney, liver, spleen, heart, lungs, and pancreas. Toxoplasma gondii was confirmed in sections of liver by avidin-biotin immunohistochemical analysis. Subsequently, a retrospective serosurvey of wild turkeys for T. gondii antibodies was conducted using turkey sera collected between 1984 and 1989. An antibody prevalence of 10% was detected in 130 birds from 21 locations in the southeastern United States. While wild turkeys in the Southeast have T. gondii antibodies, this is only the second natural case of fatal toxoplasmosis reported; it appears that wild turkeys infrequently develop clinical disease when infected with T. gondii.

Thirty-five budgerigars were infected with the Psittacid herpesvirus 1 (RSL-1 strain, ATCC) to study the pathogenesis of Pacheco's disease. Intramuscular (i.m.) and oral (p.o.) infection routes were used in 21 and 14 animals respectively. Animals were euthanized on days 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 post-inoculation (p.i.) and complete postmortem examinations and histological studies were performed. The presence of viral antigen in tissues was detected by immunohistochemical techniques using a rabbit polyclonal antibody. In the i.m.-infected birds, lesions were first detected on the third day p.i. and included necrotizing
hepatitis
and
splenitis
, both associated to the presence of viral antigen. Necrotic and inflammatory lesions as well as viral antigen were detected in many organs after the fourth day p.i. (oesophagus, crop, pancreas, kidney, adrenal gland, thyroid and parathyroid glands, thymus, ovary and feathers) proving generalization of the disease. Chronology of the infection was similar in the p.o.-infected birds. However, two main differences were observed between the groups: In the p.o. group, viral antigen was first detected in cloacal mucosa (3rd day p.i.), liver and spleen; and viral entry into target cells and dissemination to the rest of the tissues was slower in this group. In addition, detection of viral antigen in feather follicular epithelial cells and in granulosa cells of organ follicles are findings that could be of relevance to the transmission of the virus.

In following a formerly successful protocol designed to produce antibodies to A. fumigatus (Fres) we observed a disseminated, lethal fungal infection in healthy, specific pathogen-free (SPF) rabbits. The pathomorphological findings included multiple miliary to avenaceous whitish nodules in the livers and kidneys, mycotic mesencephalitis, nephritis,
hepatitis
, myocarditis, hemorrhagic enteritis, and
splenitis
. The hyphae were surrounded by necrosis, which also occurred in the liver without the hyphae. Comparative gas chromatographic and metabolic investigations on this strain and some environmental A. fumigatus strains showed significant differences. The findings are discussed with particular reference to the pathogenicity of A. fumigatus.

Bartonella (Rochalimaea) henselae is a common cause of cat-scratch disease. This newly identified bacterium is also the cause of several other clinical syndromes, including bacillary angiomatosis, bacillary peliosis
hepatitis
and
splenitis
, and acute and relapsing bacteremia. A high percentage of young cats carry B. henselae. Fortunately, serious complications of B. henselae infections are rare in immunocompetent patients. Cat-scratch disease is usually a self-limited illness that does not necessarily require antibiotic therapy. Severe or persistent cases respond well to several antibiotics, including erythromycin and doxycycline. Cat-scratch disease should be included in the differential diagnosis of serious neurologic disease, particularly when regional lymphadenopathy develops suddenly in a previously healthy patient who owns a cat. Treatment of uncomplicated central nervous system disease is generally supportive. Antibiotic therapy is reserved for patients with atypical or severe involvement, including encephalopathy and retinitis. Other internal and cutaneous manifestations of B. henselae infection have recently been described. These potentially life-threatening infections respond well to antibiotic therapy, even in immunocompromised patients.

In the present work Hafnia alvei was isolated from laying hens displaying a reduction in egg production, loss of appetite, opisthotonus, and death. Multifocal necrotizing
hepatitis
and
splenitis
were the most prominent lesions. The organism was identified microbiologically. Laying hens were experimentally inoculated by the oral and intraperitoneal route to show the pathogenicity of the organism. A very similar clinicopathologic effect resulted from this trial. Several experimentally infected laying hens died due to septicemia. We conclude that H. alvei may cause a septicemia similar to that reportedly caused by Salmonella spp. in avian species.
