An immunohistochemical localization of ligandin was undertaken in formalin fixed and paraffin wax embedded human tissues using the indirect immunoperoxidase (PAP) method and a monospecific antiligandin serum raised in rabbits. A substance reacting with this antiligandin serum was distributed diffusely in normal liver and selectively in kidney, intestine, testis, ovary and adrenal cortex. Small changes in the distribution and intensity of the reaction product were found in inflammatory conditions such as

, cholestasis,
pyelonephritis
and renal allograft rejection. Tissues which normally appear to contain abundant ligandin produce, as a general rule, easily demonstrate amounts of antiligandin reacting substance in the tumors and hyperplasias which arise from them.

An antilipidemic effect of poseidonol was tested in 123 patients with ischemic heart disease, stable angina of effort (II-III functional class), 40 patients with secondary
pyelonephritis
and 40 patients with chronic hepatosis-
hepatitis
associated with chronic alcoholism or diabetes mellitus. The patients had also hyperlipidemia. A positive effect of poseidonol was established: cholesterol content fell by 25.4, 20.6 and 18.7%, respectively; triglycerides level decreased by 63, 42 and 21.4%, respectively; B-lipoproteins fell by 55.5, 36.9 and 13.1%, respectively. High density lipoproteins rose by 40.2, 27 and 69.9%, respectively. No adverse effects either on the liver or kidney functions were observed.

A transgenic mouse line carrying ornithine decarboxylase cDNA as the transgene under the control of a mouse mammary tumor virus long terminal repeat (MMTV LTR) promoter was generated in order to study whether ornithine decarboxylase transgene expression will have any physiological or pathological effect during the entire life of a transgenic mouse. The high frequency of infertile animals and the loss of pups made the breeding of homozygous mice unsuccessful. However, a colony of heterozygous transgenic mice was followed for 2 years. In adult heterozygous transgenic mice, ornithine decarboxylase activity was significantly increased in the testis, seminal vesicle and preputial gland when compared to non-transgenic controls. In contrast, ornithine decarboxylase activity was decreased in the kidney and prostate of transgenic mice. No significant changes in ornithine decarboxylase activity were found in the ovary and mammary gland and only moderate changes in ornithine decarboxylase activity were detected in the heart, brain, pancreas and lung. The most common abnormalities found in adult animals (12 males and 20 females) of the transgenic line were inflammatory processes, including pancreatitis,

, sialoadenitis and

Spontaneous tumors were observed in eight animals, including two benign tumors (one dermatofibroma, one liver hemangioma) and six malignant tumors (one lymphoma, one intestinal and three mammary adenocarcinomas and one adenocarcinoma in the lung). There are limited therapeutic options available for patients with autoimmune
hepatitis
in whom conventional treatment fails. A case series of five patients unresponsive to or unable to take azathioprine, 6-mercaptopurine or corticosteroids who were treated with mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) is reported. While on MMF, alanine aminotransferase normalized or remained normal in all patients. MMF had a steroid-sparing effect and histological remission was demonstrated in one patient after seven months of MMF. One patient experienced an uncomplicated episode of
pyelonephritis
. In conclusion, MMF can effectively induce and maintain remission in refractory autoimmune

patients.

Papillon-Lefevre syndrome (PLS) is an autosomally recessive palmoplantar keratoderma accompanied by psoriasiform plaques on the extensor surfaces of extremities and leading to premature loss of deciduous and permanent teeth by progressive periodontitis. Patients with PLS may exhibit mental retardation, intracranial ectopic calcifications, nail dystrophies and a tendency to various infectious disorders, in addition to skin and oral findings. Herein, we report a 26-year-old man with PLS, who had experienced xanthogranulomatous

In cats, primary or secondary immune-mediated thrombocytopenia have rarely been described or characterised. The objective of this study was to determine platelet-bound antibodies (PBA) by a flow cytometric assay in both healthy and thrombocytopenic cats. Direct PBA testing was performed in 42 thrombocytopenic cats (platelet counts 6-179 x 10(9)/l, median 56 x 10(9)/l). Of these 42 cats, 19 had positive PBA test results, 17 of which were considered to have secondary immune-mediated thrombocytopenia (sITP). Underlying diseases included fat necroses (four cases), feline infectious peritonitis (three), feline leukaemia virus (two) or feline immunodeficiency virus (two) infections, lymphoma (two), leukaemia (one),
hepatitis
(one),
pyelonephritis
(one), or hyperthyroidism (one). In two cats, no underlying disease was found suggesting a primary immune-mediated thrombocytopenia (pITP). The PBA test was negative in 23 cats diagnosed with varying underlying diseases and in 47 healthy control cats with platelet values within the reference range. Only seven of the 42 cats with thrombocytopenia (platelet count 10-57 x 10(9)/l, median 34 x 10(9)/l) had spontaneous bleeding. This study suggests that immune-mediated destruction of platelets might be an important pathological mechanism for feline thrombocytopenia caused by various underlying diseases. In cats, pITP appears to be rarely diagnosed.

An 80-year-old woman with hilar cholangiocarcinoma was hospitalized due to sudden-onset abdominal pain. Computed tomography revealed hepatic necrosis accompanied with emphysematous change in the superior segment of the right liver (S7/S8), implying spontaneous rupture, based on the presence of perihepatic free air. Although urgent percutaneous drainage was performed, neither pus nor fluids were drained. These findings suggest emphysematous
