Visceral larva migrans
was produced in 16 cynomolgus macaques (Macaca fascicularis) experimentally inoculated with 45,000 embryonated eggs of Toxocara canis as a single bolus or in 3 divided doses. The hematologic and serologic changes were similar to those observed in children with visceral Toxocara infection. Neurologic signs developed in 3 animals and were characterized by ataxia and nystagmus. Growth rates were diminished in inoculated animals when compared with the rates in noninoculated controls. Diagnostic antibody titers as measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay were noted in all inoculated macaques by the 4th week, and these titers persisted during the 7-month period of observation. Antibody to Toxocara was not detected in the aqueous or vitreous humors. Lesions comprised severe granulomatous
hepatitis
and encephalomyelitis. Intraocular lesions associated with larval migration were not observed.

caused by Toxocara canis is rarely taken into account in adult patients with cholestatic syndrome, especially when liver disease is not associated with hypereosinophilic reaction. We report on a 74-year-old immunocompetent woman who presented with fever, bronchospasm, erythema nodosum, weight loss and progressive jaundice. A liver biopsy showed caseating granulomatous
hepatitis
with secondary portal fibrosis and paucity of interlobular bile ducts. A step-by-step search for aetiological factors led us to a diagnosis of toxocariasis (positive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay IgG test). An excellent clinical response to combined treatment with steroid and diethylcarbamazine, and a reduction in the antibody level against T. canis supported the diagnosis. Computed tomography and laparoscopy demonstrated multiple small mass lesions and fibrous perihepatitis. This report shows that visceral larva migrans may be a cause of prostrating chronic liver disease and should be suspected in every febrile patient with cryptogenic cholestatic

Visceral larva migrans
(VLM) most commonly occurs as a febrile disease of childhood particularly affecting children between 1 and 7 years of age. Pulmonary, dermatological, hepatic, lymphatic, cardiac, rheumatological and neurological manifestations may occur. VLM seems to be a rare disease in adults. We report the imaging findings of a woman with hepatic toxocariasis. Ultrasonography showed a solitary hepatic lesion measuring 4 x 3 cm, displaying a hypoechoic-heterogeneous pattern with ill-defined borders and distal acoustic enhancement, located in the right sub-diaphragmatic area. Two enlarged periportal lymph nodes and moderately dilated intrahepatic biliary ducts were also noted. The probability of toxocariasis was discussed, based on sonographic and biopsy findings, and the final diagnosis was confirmed by a specific ELISA test. In summary, a clinical picture of cholestasis initially resembling
hepatitis
or malignancy should be further evaluated by imaging techniques, and the ultrasound examiner should be familiar with the possible findings of hepatic toxocariasis, which consist of focal ill-defined hepatic lesions, hepato-splenomegaly, biliary dilatation, sludge and periportal lymph node enlargement.
