Thyroid tumors may involve the airway. Eight patients with such invasion are reported; five with invasion of the larynx and three of the trachea. The symptoms varied: five of the eight patients had stridor and hemoptysis, one had hoarseness, and two had no symptoms at all. Endoscopic and radiologic examinations were performed in all patients including computed tomography in six. Six patients underwent total thyroidectomy and two patients, one with paraganglioma and one with hemangiopericytoma, had a hemithyroidectomy. Three patients had a total laryngectomy, one a partial laryngectomy and one a laryngofissure procedure. Tracheal resection was performed in two patients and one had laser excision of the endotracheal tumor involvement. Three patients received postoperative external irradiation. Six of the eight patients are alive with follow-up of 39 to 85 months.

Only three cases of tracheal paraganglioma have been reported in the literature. This paper describes an additional case, which showed pharmacological and ultrastructural evidence of hormone secretion. It is suggested that this tumor is derived from true paraganglia located in the trachea and not from misplaced or aberrant paraganglionic tissue. Hemoptysis was the only presenting symptom in two of the four reported cases and significant bleeding occurred during biopsy in the other two cases. The long-term prognosis appears good if complete resection is possible.

We report a case of a 41-year-old woman who presented with occasional hemoptysis and hoarseness. Imaging showed a mass primarily in the sphenoid sinus but also extending into the right posterior ethmoid sinus and nasopharynx. Histology showed this mass to be a paraganglioma. We describe its computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging findings, and we discuss the differential diagnosis and treatment.

We report the case of a bilateral carotid body paraganglioma which gave metastases to the lung parenchyma; the rarity of diffuse visceral spread is emphasised in this article. The patient was a 69-year-old woman operated for a right carotid body paraganglioma in 1997. In August 2002, a recurrent left carotid body paraganglioma was resected. Three months later she started presenting minimum hemoptysis and pulmonary tumours were detected during a routine chest roentgenographic examination. A right upper lobectomy and a wedge resection in the lower lobe were performed to remove them. Grossly, the greatest tumour measured 3.3x2.5x2.3cm and was well circumscribed and subpleural. It was histologically confirmed that these pulmonary tumours were metastases from the primary paraganglioma.

Paraganglioma with tracheal location is a rare tumor. Twelve cases with involvement of the trachea have been reported in English literature, including six cases of solely tracheal paragangliomas. We present a case of a paraganglioma confined to the tracheal wall in a 33-year-old pregnant woman. The tumor was locally resected. Follow-up 17 months later showed no evidence of relapse. Based on the literature, we found that the most common symptoms are respiratory impairment and haemoptysis. None of the cases showed malignant behaviour.

Paragangliomas are neuroendocrine tumors that originate from extra-adrenal chromaffin cells. The trachea is an unusual site for paragangliomas. A 29-years-old female was admitted to our clinic with complaints of recurrent hemoptysis and dyspnea, and a 1.5x1.3 cm mass in the posterior wall of the trachea, which was subsequently diagnosed as a paraganglioma. In this report, we presented the 11th case of tracheal paraganglioma, a rare benign tracheal tumor, and reviewed the medical literature.

Paraganglioma of the trachea is a rare neoplasm, with fewer than 15 cases reported. A 40-year-old man presented with stridor and hemoptysis. Bronchoscopy demonstrated a tumor of the posterior trachea and biopsy initially suggested typical carcinoid. The patient underwent surgical resection uneventfully and made a good recovery. Final pathology disclosed the tumor to be a paraganglioma based on immunohistology. The pathophysiology and treatment of this tumor are discussed.

Paraganglioma is a rare extra-adrenal tumor of the paraganglia often found in association with sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves. The case presented is of a 10-year-old boy with hemoptysis who was found to have an obstructive bronchial mass. He underwent surgical resection and biopsy confirmed primary pulmonary paraganglioma. He was subsequently found to have an associated genetic syndrome. This is the first case report describing a primary pulmonary paraganglioma in a child.
