Gastrodia elata Blume is a famous Chinese medicinal plant, which has been widely used for the treatment of rheumatism, epilepsy, paralysis,
hemiplegia
, lumbago, headache and vertigo. High-speed counter-current chromatography was successfully used for the first time for the preparative isolation and purification of the bioactive component gastrodin from G. elata Blume. The crude gastrodin was obtained by extraction with ethanol from the dried roots of G. elata Blume under sonication. Preparative high-speed counter-current chromatography with a two-phase solvent system composed of n-butanol-
ethyl acetate
-water (2:3:5, v/v/v) was successfully performed yielding 48 mg gastrodin at 96% purity from 500 mg of the crude extract (10.3% gastrodin) with the recovery of approximately 90% in a one-step separation.

Isospora belli is a coccidian protozoon that can cause serious diarrhea especially in immunocompromised patients. The laboratory diagnosis depends primarily on the identification of oocysts in stool specimens by direct microscopic examination with iodine or special stains. This case is presented in order to draw attention to isosporiasis among the diarrheas that can be seen in elderly patients with several chronic diseases. A 81 year-old debilitated male, who had a history of hypertension, Alzheimer's disease, previous cerebrovascular accident and right
hemiplegia
, was admitted to our hospital complaining of malaise, anorexia, chills, abdominal pain, dysuria, cough, sputum and diarrhea of ten days duration. I. belli oocysts were detected by microscopic examination of the sample with iodine after concentration by formalin-
ethyl acetate
sedimentation. Then, modified acid-fast and trichrome stains were performed and I. belli oocysts were detected with both methods. Similar to this case, infections caused by I. belli can occur in elderly immunocompromised patients with several chronic diseases and inadequate nutrition and care. Consequently, in individuals with persistent diarrhea, examinations and tests should be carried out by taking their immune status into consideration and stool examinations should be done at frequent intervals using the concentrations methods and special stains.

Capparis zeylanica Linn (Caparadaceae), a well-known traditional medicinal plant has been used prevalently in the Ayurvedic system of medicine. It has long been used in treating cholera,
hemiplegia
, pneumonia, helmintic and inflammatory activity. This study aims to investigate the antimicrobial activity of C. zeylanica leaf extracts against pathogenic microorganisms, with the interactions of potential compounds being predicted by a computational approach.
Ethyl acetate
leaf extracts of C. zeylanica were evaluated for antimicrobial activity using an agar well diffusion method against pathogenic microorganisms (Staphylococcus epidermidis, Enterococcus faecalis, Salmonella paratyphi, Shigella dysenteriae, Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Candida albicans). The
ethyl acetate
leaf extracts of the C. zeylanica were utilized for GC-MS analysis. Computational studies were performed to analyze the novel compound using Schrodinger software. The various concentrations of
ethyl acetate
leaf extract of C. zeylanica were checked against pathogenic microorganisms. Among them, Salmonella paratyphi shows the maximum inhibition. Molecular docking and ADME properties showed that (3E)-N-(3,4 Dichlorophenyl)-3-(Propionylhydrazono) butanamide, Heptadecanoic-Margaric acid and 5-(3-Fluorophenyl)-7-nitro-1,3-dihydro-2H-1,4-benzodiazepine-2-one had the highest fitness score and more specificity toward the microbial receptors.
