The frequency of chest deformities is 1:100; operative treatment, however, is necessary in only 1:1000 patients with such a deformity. The most frequent deformity--in 91%--is the funnel chest. Chicken breast, combined types, and fissures of the sternum are seldom seen. Indications for operative treatment are: deformity of more than 25% of the normal sagittal diameter of the chest; heart failure and the degree of pathologic signs on the EKG; alterations of the vertebral column; psychologic aspects. Our operative procedure consists of double cartilage incision and stabilization of the chest with a metal strut.

An infant girl manifesting bilateral cryptophthalmos with multiple associated malformations was followed from birth. The globes were almost covered by a fold of skin and the findings were interesting in regard to the etiology of cryptophthalmos. The other congenital deformities included scaphocephaly, somewhat low-set ears, accessory tragi, a high arched palate, and funnel chest. The child was operated on at the age of 4 months with relatively satisfactory results, although she died suddenly of acute heart failure 4 months postoperatively.

Esophageal cancer is a disease that is difficult to manage before and after surgery and is associated with a high in-hospital mortality rate despite there being reports of improved outcomes after multidisciplinary treatment. Meanwhile, although funnel chest is generally a subclinical condition, patients with this deformity may sometimes present with cardiac failure and chest pain. We report a case of advanced esophageal cancer with a funnel chest deformity that was very difficult to reconstruct after thoracoscopy-assisted resection.
