Millions of Americans get virtually all their current events information from the national nightly television news programs. The purpose of this study was to learn what diabetes-related information had been broadcast over the last 11 years by the network news programs. Another objective was to learn how that coverage compared with that given other chronic diseases. The Vanderbilt Television News Archives (VTNA) has videotaped every
ABC
, NBC, and CBS nightly newscast since mid-1968. The contents of each telecast have been catalogued and indexed. Indexes were searched for every segment that had anything to do with diabetes from 1971 through 1981. In the last 11 years there have been 32 diabetes-related news segments. More than a third were about the controversial attempt to ban saccharin. Because each network may carry essentially the same story, the number of nonoverlapping reports was 20. The total time of the diabetes-related segments was 70 minutes. The topics covered by the news reports included oral agents (5 reports), artificial sweeteners (12), biosynthetic human insulin (BHI) (7), and an assortment of unique items. The 32 diabetes-related segments compare with 23 about arthritis, 215 about heart diseases, and 925 dealing with cancer. A compilation of the non-overlapping segments has been shown to health professionals, who felt the stories were generally accurate. Diabetes is not portrayed as a killer. Therefore, diabetes seems less serious, and therefore less newsworthy, than
heart disease
or cancer.

The suffering of children with congenital
heart disease
, or with other clinical conditions, inquires people and urges us to face and solve many problems. It makes us to reflect on the life's secrets and bring us to consider that every condition can be or became negative if accepted with indifference, inertia, fear or convenience. The clinicians must always fight the disease, not passing by with indifference to those who live and suffer. The physicians, the researchers should not surrender to what is unknown. They must always be looking to the not-yet of the human possibilities, to the not-yet of research. Human problems become difficult to solve it we do not enter in one echosystem of solidarity. The
ABC
(Association of families with children suffering of congenital
heart disease
) represents an answer to many problems related to the presence of a heart condition in infants and children.

The expression plasmid of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) 52kd glycoprotein was induced and amplified, and the recombinant protein was extracted. The rabbit antiserum to the recombinant protein was prepared. The antiserum-reacted to the antigen of HCMV AD165, and the titer of antiserum was 1 : 3200 by using 125I-Protein A. Using Avidin-Biotinperoxidase complex technique (
ABC
method), we detected the HCMV 52 kd glycoprotein in the hapatic slides of 9 cases. Among them, one case (an infant died of congenital
heart disease
) was held as a negative control. The other 8 cases (patients with clinically diagnosed cytomegalic inclusion disease) had viral hepatitis histopathologically. Of these 8 cases, 7 had positive signals but found in the nucleus and cytomembrane of the hepatocytes, no positive signal was found in the hepatocytes of the control. The result showed that HCMV 52kd glycoprotein was located in the nucleus and on the membrane of the infected hepatocyte. The antibody prepared with the antigen of gene engineering could find the virus antigen and represent the virus gene state which was active or silent.
ABC
method is not only simple, sensitive and specific, but also effective in localization. It is of importance to clinical diagnosis, differential diagnosis and prognostication.

Transport ATPases can be lumped into four distinct types, P, F, V, and
ABC
, with the first three designated 20 years ago (Pedersen, P.L. and Carafoli, E., Trends Biochem. Sci. 12, 146-150, 1987) and the
ABC
type included more recently. The mini-reviews (>20) that comprise this volume of the Journal of Bioenergetics and Biomembranes describe work presented at the 2007 FASEB Conference (6th) on Transport ATPases (Kathleen Sweadner, Chair; Rajini Rao, Co-Chair). Since these conferences began in 1997, the "transport ATPase field" has seen tremendous progress. Advances include a much better understanding of the structure, mechanism, and regulation of each of the four major ATPase types as well as their physiological and medical relevance. In fact, the transport ATPase field has entered a new era in which work on these enzymes is likely to contribute to new therapies for multiple diseases that affect both people and animals. Among these are cancer and
heart disease
, mitochondrial diseases, osteoporosis, macromolecular degeneration, immune deficiency, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, ulcers, nephro-toxicity, hearing loss, skin disorders, lupus, and malaria. In addition, as several members of the transport ATPase family include those involved in drug resistance their study may help alleviate this recurring problem in drug development. Finally, the transport ATPase field is also paving the way for nanotechnology focused on nano-motors with work on the F-type ATPases (F(0)F(1)) leading the way. These ATPases driven in reverse by a proton gradient have the capacity to interconvert electrochemical energy into mechanical energy and finally into chemical energy conserved in the terminal bond of ATP. In mammalian mitochondria these events occur on a larger complex or "nano-machine" called the "ATP synthasome" that consists of the ATP synthase in complex formation with carriers for P(i) and ADP/ATP.

Considering the historical and academic relevance of the Brazilian Archives of Cardiology (
ABC
), as its MEDLINE indexing began in 1950, it was assumed as a hypothesis that the analysis of the publications over the last 60 years could reflect the changing trends of
heart disease
in Brazil. The study data were collected using a program developed for this purpose, allowing the automatic extraction of information from the MEDLINE database. The study information were collected by searching "Brazilian Archives of Cardiology AND selected parameter in English". Four observational groups were determined: (1) major groups of heart diseases (coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, congenital
heart disease
and cardiomyopathies); (2) relevant diseases in clinical practice (cardiac arrhythmias, cor pulmonale, myocardial infarction and congestive heart failure); (3) cardiovascular risk factors (hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia and atherosclerosis); and (4) group determined due to the growing trend of publications on congestive heart failure seen in previous groups (congestive heart failure, myocardial infarction, rheumatic heart disease and Chagasic
heart disease
) All publications within the established groups were described, highlighting the increasing importance of heart failure and diabetes as risk factors. A relatively easy search was carried out, using the computer program developed for literature search covering six decades. Emphasizing the limitations of the study, we suggest the existence of an epidemiological link between cardiac diseases that are prevalent in Brazil and the publications of the Brazilian Archives of Cardiology.
