Results of comprehensive neurological examinations of 4 patients suffering from periodic disease have shown that the latter may be not only a disease entity, but also a syndrome characterizing some organic affections of the brain. The abdominal and other crises of the periodic disease included cerebrovascular disturbances which manifested hemipareses, syncopes, and migraine-like cephalgia. EEG and REG examinations have revealed dysfunction of the mesodiencephalic structures which, probably, underlies the pathogenesis of the periodic disease. The knowledge of the formerly almost unexplored neurological manifestations of the periodic disease will contribute to improvement of the therapy of this rare ailment.

A REG study of 90 patients with migraine headaches demonstrated that a significant role in their genesis is played by regional hypertonia of cerebral vessels and phenomena of cerebral angiodystonia with a tendency towards spastic reactions rather than hypotonic. The use of stugeron for preventive treatment of migrain cephalgia was effective in 85 of the 100 treated patients and especially in those cases where there was an increased tone of the cerebral vessels according to the REG data. The most constant changes demonstrated by the REG were normalization of the vascular tone, more expressed in initial hypertone and to a less extent its influence on the cerebral blood flux (more frequently towards its increase and a decrease of hemispheric asymmetry). The authors consider it expedient to use REG methods when prescribing stugeron.

The author conducted a REG study of 68 patients who were referred to hospitals due to paroxysmal headaches of a vascular genesis. Changes characteristic of attacks of headaches with phasic cerebral disturbances were revealed. The results of such studies were used for prescribing rational therapy and for the assessment of the working capacity of these patients.

Dynamics of electro- and rheoencephalographic (EEG and REG) indices in patients with some forms of cephalgia (vegetovascular dystonia--VVD) as well as with chronic nonspecific pulmonary diseases has been studied under the effect of artificial mountain climate therapy conducted using a special chamber "Orotron" created by a collective of researchers from Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The results of EEG and REG analysis reflect a general tendency to improvement of the bioelectrical brain activity and cerebral hemodynamics.

According to the authors' observations, the symptoms of nervous system derangement associated with legionnaires' disease rather often enter the disease structure and can virtually be characterized as a manifestation of infectious and toxic encephalopathy and polyneuropathy (encephalopolyneuropathy). In the majority of cases, the neurological disorders develop acutely or subacutely after or simultaneously with respiratory lesions. The clinical picture of encephalopathy is marked by permanent headache, mental abnormalities, memory disturbances, insomnia, pronounced astheno-vegetative and vascular manifestations. In patients with legionellosis, polyneuropathy is manifested by paresthesias, less frequently by pains in the distal parts of the limbs and myasthenia without visible atrophies. Vegetative disorders such as vegetative polyneuropathy of the hands and legs, visceral polyneuropathies are typical symptoms of the disease whatever its gravity. Vegetovascular dystonia together with long-term AP instability is an obligate sign of the disease. Electrophysiological examinations (EEG, REG, EMG) support the clinical findings and may serve the basis for an objective evaluation of the gravity of the neurological disorders. The degree of pulmonary lesions and the intensity of vegetative disorders eventually determine the torpidity and characteristics of the disease course.

Results of treating 166 patients from migraine by reflexotherapy methods (acupuncture, electropuncture, electroacupuncture) are presented along with the data of clinico-genealogical, electrophysiological (EEG, REG, OPG, ECG) and biochemical (serotonine, histamine, and dopamine blood levels) examinations performed prior to and after the reflexotherapy course. Recommendations for treating migraine with reference to the form, stage, intensity, and localization of the headache are given. A positive effect of the reflexotherapy was obtained in 95.9% of the patients: this was confirmed by the control clinico-electrophysiological and biochemical findings.

Overall 37 patients with painful dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), characterized clinically by headaches and dizziness as well (25 persons) were examined. A study was made of REG. The responsiveness of the sinocarotid node (SCN) was recorded. Diverse changes in the REG readings that attested to the development of cerebral angiodystonia were recorded. Abnormal responsiveness of SCN was discovered. Skillful orthopedic correction of the spatial position of the mandible was associated with noticeable changes in the normalizing and optimizing character of numerous REG readings. These data together with optimization of the responsiveness of the SCN point to the role played by the irritative vascular mechanism in the pathogenesis of headaches and dizziness seen in TMJ dysfunction.
