The pathophysiology of migraine and its associated perceptual symptoms remains controversial. We recorded long-latency auditory event related potentials (AEPs) in 30 unmedicated patients with common migraine, and compared them to 20 controls. 1,000 and 3,000 Hz tones were presented in an 80:20 ratio at 75 dB SL. 200 responses were recorded and replicated from Cz-A1 + A2, with filter band-pass of 1-100 Hz, analysis time of 1,000 ms., and interstimulus interval of 1.1 second. , and N200 ERP components did not differ in latency or amplitude between migraine patients and controls. P300 was longer in latency among those with common migraine, and P300 amplitude was significantly reduced (P greater than 0.05). These findings suggest that migraine may have a central mechanism, and that migraineurs may have a difference in task involvement or perception which may influence their clinical course and response to therapy.

An experiment is described which compared visual evoked potential (VEP) amplitudes and latencies in normal subjects and migraine patients. Several VEP abnormalities were found: at vertex and to a lesser extent at temporal sites, P100-N120 amplitudes were larger in patients; at vertex and temporal sites N120 amplitudes were larger in patients; at temporal sites patents had larger N120-

Central sensitization caused by prolonged nociceptive input from muscles is considered to play an important role for chronification of tension-type
headache
. In the present study we used a new high-density EEG brain mapping technique to investigate spatiotemporal aspects of brain activity in response to muscle pain in 19 patients with chronic tension-type
headache
(CTTH) and 19 healthy, age- and sex-matched controls. Intramuscular electrical stimuli (single and train of five pulses delivered at 2 Hz) were applied to the trapezius muscle and somatosensory evoked potentials were recorded with 128-channel EEG both in- and outside a condition with induced tonic neck/shoulder muscle pain (glutamate injection into the trapezius muscle). Significant reduction in magnitude during and after induced tonic muscle pain was found in controls at the
P200
dipole in response to both the first (baseline versus tonic muscle pain: P = 0.001; baseline versus post-tonic muscle pain: P = 0.002) and fifth (baseline versus tonic muscle pain: P = 0.04; baseline versus post-tonic muscle pain: P = 0.04) stimulus in the train. In contrast, there were no differences between the conditions in patients. No consistent difference was found in localization or peak latency of the dipoles. The reduction in magnitude during and after induced tonic muscle pain in controls but not in patients with CTTH may be explained by impaired inhibition of the nociceptive input in these patients. This may be the first evidence that the supraspinal response to muscle pain is abnormal in patients with CTTH.

who had a mean age of 38.7+/-9.7 years and who were free of pain at the time of testing. Twenty-five age-matched healthy persons served as controls. Latencies and amplitudes of corresponding responses (N100,

, and P300) were measured. The parameters were calculated at Pz for the P300 and Cz electrodes for the N100 and

. Multiple analysis of variance revealed a significant overall effect of group (P=0.011).

amplitude was significantly smaller in cluster

patients (P=0.0002). No differences were found for N100 or P300. These data suggest a hitherto unrecognized defect in the information processing pathways, in the early attentive phase represented by the

component.
