A young male foundry worker had headache, nonproductive cough, orthopnea, formication, rigor, fever, and substernal pain after exposure to concentrated metal fumes. Examination revealed bilateral basal rales. Serial spirometry suggested a transitory restrictive impairment with persistent mild to moderate obstructive impairment. Leukocytosis, hypoxemia, and the other symptoms resolved with no therapy other than the patient's removal from the polluted area.

The present investigation was undertaken to establish the relation between climacteric symptoms, ovarian function, ageing, and psychological factors. The subjects were as follows; 1,270 women who received a screening test for cervical cancer and 247 women following hysterectomy. The methods of investigation were Kupperman menopausal index (K-index), Cornell Medical Index (CMI) and YG character questionnaire (YG test). The following results were obtained: 1) the K-index increased until 39 years of age and was constant after 40 years. Five symptoms (chills, nervousness, melancholia, excitability and vertigo) were not influenced by ageing, and seven symptoms (panting, hypesthesia, insomnia, wakefulness, fatigue, palpitation and formication) increased with age. Hot flushes, perspiration, numbness, shoulder stiffness, lumbago, and headache, occurred at peak frequency in the climacteric period. 2) In hot flushes, perspiration, numbness, hypesthesia, shoulder stiffness, lumbago, and formication, a significant difference was found between the control and those patients who had received bilateral oophorectomy. 3) The K-index and CMI score were significantly correlated, and six symptoms (palpitation, panting, excitability, vertigo, wakefulness and formication) in particular were related to CMI. 4) The K-index was lowest in the patients indicated to be the D type by the YG test, and was highest in the patients of the B.E type. Six symptoms (excitability, palpitation, panting, melanchoria, hypesthesia and formication) were thought to be associated with the character of the patients. Results showed that four symptoms (hot flushes, perspiration, numbness, shoulder stiffness and lumbago) were closely related to ovarian function, and three symptoms (panting, excitability, and palpitation) depended largely on mental factors. A 15 year old boy was evaluated in the psychiatric emergency room for the acute onset of "confusion,"insomnia, headache, and shaking of one week's duration. Two days later hallucinations, formication and a movement disorder emerged characterized by action tremor, myoclonus, chorea and ataxia. Further history revealed inhalation of gasoline for its euphoric effects. Plasma lead levels were in the toxic range. Chelation therapy reversed the clinical symptoms. Behavioral changes and a movement disorder in the context of gasoline inhalation are highly suggestive of organic lead encephalopathy. Recognition of this syndrome is important as chelation therapy is effective.

Many natural substances were screened to develop nutraceuticals that reduce menopausal symptoms. A complex of Cirsium japonicum var. maackii and Thymus vulgaris extracts, named MS-10, had significant positive effects. Under a low concentration of estrogen, which represents postmenopausal physiological conditions, MS-10 had beneficial effects on estrogen receptor-expressing MCF-7 cells by reversibly enhancing estrogen activity. In addition, in the ovariectomized rat model, changes in bone-specific alkaline phosphatase activity and osteocalcin, as well as low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglyceride levels were significantly decreased by MS-10. These results show that MS-10 protected bone health and reduced metabolic disturbances. Furthermore, in a clinical study, all menopausal symptoms, including hot flushes, parenthesis, insomnia, nervousness, melancholia, vertigo, fatigue, rheumatic pain, palpitations, formication, and headache, as well as colpoxerosis, were significantly improved by taking MS-10 for 90 days. Therefore, the evidence supports that MS-10 is an effective natural substance that can safely improve menopausal symptoms, including colpoxerosis.
