Twenty-two smokers with elevated hematocrits (mean, 54 per cent) had elevated blood carboxyhemoglobin (mean, 11.6 per cent; normal, less than 1 per cent) and a "left-shifted" oxygen-hemoglobin dissociation curve (mean P50, 21.6 +/- 2.3 [+/- S.D.] torr; normal, 26.7 +/- 1.1). Red-cell volume was increased in 14 of 18, and plasma volume reduced in 14 of 18. Fatigue and headache were common, and syncopal attacks occurred in four patients. Symptoms disappeared and the elevated red-cell volume decreased markedly in all five patients who were able to reduce severely their smoking habit; low plasma volume increased in three of four patients studied. We conclude that carbon monoxide exposure from cigar and cigarette smoke is a frequent cause of an elevated red-cell volume or a reduced plasma volume (or both). Measurement of carboxyhemoglobin should be a routine part of the evaluation of all polycythemic subjects.

Seventeen patients with migraine without aura were investigated: the age was between 16 and 39 years, 6 were men and 11 women. The diagnosis of migraine was made according to the classification proposed by the International Headache Society. The method of electroretinogram was performed with pattern reversal (PERG), with monocular stimulation. The stimulation was performed with pattern reversal with 4 x 4 cm black and white squared screen placed one meter from nasion at stimulus frequency 1/s; 512 individual trials were analysed. The PERG did not show a significant increase in the value of the P50 and N95 latency in our cases. Specifically in one of our cases no wave was detected in the left eye.

The acoustically evoked cortical potentials of 20 migraine patients were investigated using a combined conditioning-testing and oddball paradigm. The short- and long-term habituation results of the P50 and P300 waves were compared with 16 healthy subjects. Migraineurs were characterized by a sensory gating deficit of the P50 wave (reduced short-term habituation) in the non-target condition and a reduced long-term habituation of the P300 wave in the target condition. The study describes disturbances of information processing on the automatic and cognitive levels in migraine patients and emphasizes the role of sensory gating and orienting response in migraine pathogenesis.

Migraine is a debilitating disorder characterized by recurrent headache arising from neurovascular dysfunction. Despite recent progress in migraine research, the exact mechanisms underpinning migraine are poorly understood. Furthermore, it is difficult to develop an animal model of migraine that resembles all symptoms of patients. In this study, we established a novel animal model of migraine induced by epidural injection of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), and examined climbing hutch behavior, facial-grooming behavior, body-grooming behavior, freezing behavior, resting behavior, and ipsilateral hindpaw facial grooming behavior of rats following CGRP injection. CGRP significantly reduced climbing hutch behavior, and face-grooming behavior, and increased immobile behavior. We also found that the P15 and P85 percentile range of behavioral data exhibited a high positive rate (83.3%) for establishing the model with less false positive rate. Our results verified that the rat model of migraine induced by CGRP featured many behaviors of migraine patients demonstrated during migraine attacks. Our findings suggest that this new model can be a useful tool for understanding the pathophysiology of migraine and studying novel therapeutic strategies for the treatment of migraine.
