Subsequent to a bone marrow transplant, Doyle Deel developed graft-versus-host disease, which in turn led to a degenerative respiratory ailment that required use of a mechanical respirator. Fully aware of the possible consequence of death and fully competent to make the decision, Deel requested that the respirator be removed. The U.S. District Court held that because Deel was competent and emotionally stable, he had a right to refuse or discontinue life-sustaining medical treatment which outweighed the state's countervailing interests in preserving life, preventing suicide, protecting innocent third parties, and promoting the integrity of medical ethics. The court directed that the respirator be removed.
