A study has been performed on 467 cases of differents parasitic diseases and ABO blood groups. With classical statistical methods, we did not find any correlation, but with a large number of variables, we used the factorial analysis, and we obtained maps with relationship O-hookworm and strongloidiasis. A-giardiasis, B-Entamoeba coli. But AB group seems to be far from all parasitosis. Besides, blood group and severity of diseases seem not to be related. With HLA groups, a study by microlymphocytotoxicity on 36 West-African (Sarakole people) showed that HLA B5 is predominant in cases of schistosomiasis.

The relationship between giardiasis and ABO blood groups was studied in a group of 136 children from Eastern Slovakia, with a special attention to ethnic specifics of gipsy children. The study showed no statistically significant differences in the distribution of ABO blood groups between the subgroup of Giardia-infected gipsy children and the gipsy population minority living in the area. On the other hand, the ABO distribution pattern in subgroup of non-gipsy children infected with Giardia intestinalis was found to differ from that in the general non-gipsy Eastern Slovakian population by the absence of blood group AB among children with giardiasis. There was indicated a tendency towards an increased frequency of blood group B in subgroup of Giardia-infected gipsy children and towards group A in subgroup of nongipsy children with giardiasis, but the differences were not statistically significant.

Since an excess of blood group A in giardiasis has been repeatedly reported, we studied 190 patients with parasitologically confirmed giardiasis. Their blood group distribution did not differ from that of the Finnish population, and the statistically insignificant deviations were a surplus of group B and a shortage of group A. Among 85 participants of four travel groups which experienced an epidemic of giardiasis, the blood group distributions of the infected and the noninfected persons were not different. Thus, blood group A did not predispose to the acquisition of Giardia lamblia infection. To disclose an impact on the course of the disease, the patients were classified according to symptoms or duration of infection, but the ABO distributions did not differ from the expected. Our patients were adults, probably contracting giardiasis for the first time during a trip abroad, while the excess of group A has been reported in children in enedemic areas.

A total of 455 children were chosen randomly and surveyed for giardiasis by stool examination using several techniques. A case control study design was adopted where 91 cases of giardiasis (symptomatic and asymptomatic) and 101 children giardiasis free were examined. ABO blood groups and HLA typing were investigated. It was concluded that blood group A was more susceptible to giardiasis especially asymptomatic form, while blood group B was less susceptible to giardiasis. On the other hand, there was no association between AB or O and giardiasis. But, there was a strong association between HLA A10, A11, B5, B7 and B17 phenotypes and symptomatic giardiasis and an association as well between HLA B7, B17, Bw14 and Bw40 and asymptomatic giardiasis.
