"This paper focuses on spatial variation of growth within a state. Using Ohio as a case study, two hypotheses are extracted from the literature. First, the theories of polarization and polarization reversal suggest that in the old industrial core the leading sector role of manufacturing has diminished in old manufacturing poles, and that income growth trends differ substantially between these old poles and new centres of development. Second, the theories of suburbanization and migration reversals suggest that population growth is contingent upon level of urbanization, and that the relationship has changed drastically between the pre-1970s, 1970s, and post-1970s periods." The authors examine the 1989 removal of the frontier region (Zonenrandgebiet) along the eastern border of the former Federal Republic of Germany. "The paper examines the socio-economic impacts on the North Bavarian section of the Zonenrandgebiet, which is characterized by its dispersed industrial base and lack of higher-order urban centres. Evidence is presented of rapid upturns in population growth and economic activity, together with a large inflow of commuters from the former East Germany and Czechoslovakia, following frontier opening. Traffic, environmental pressures and living costs have also increased. Both positive and negative impacts are strongest in districts contiguous with the former frontier. Long-term development prospects hinge on its newly-gained centrality within Germany. Substantial local benefits are anticipated...,but they are unlikely to induce a major reshaping of the German space-economy; this will be dominated by the rivalry between the largest metropolitan centres." "The present study describes...a part of the interrelation of living arrangements and migration: The connection between marital status and spatial mobility. Moreover, the significance of the reasons for family migration will be assessed. [Section] 2 covers the relationship between family or household structure and change of residence and refers to the findings of other studies. The third [section] presents the empirical findings which are to be seen against the background of changing household and family patterns in Switzerland over the last 20 to 30 years. With the aid of aggregated data from censuses and population registration offices, the differences in migratory behaviour by socio-demographic characteristics are first shown: by age, sex, marital status and nationality. In addition, a distinction is made between intercommune, intercantonal and international migration. The initial findings of the descriptive analysis are followed by multivariate statistics produced with the aid of microdata from the Swiss Labour Force Survey." (SUMMARY IN FRE AND GER)

"This paper investigates why Third World cities have been growing in the last several decades much more quickly than cities in industrialized countries. For this purpose, we develop a Krugman-type model of economic geography with two continents, North and South, each of which consisting of two regions, East and West. We study the impact different levels of transport costs and tariffs exert on the distribution of economic activities among the regions. We find that lower costs for transport between the regions in the South, for instance, induced by an improved infrastructure, as well as lower tariffs on intercontinental trade tend to lead to less concentrated economies." "Interregional migration is analyzed with respect to its short-run responsiveness to economic fluctuations and its efficiency as a spatial labour market allocation mechanism. Using a space-time analytical framework, in-migration to four fast growing States of the United States is analyzed over the period 1958-1975. It is shown via a time-series model, employing a Koyck-distributed lag methodology, that short-run in-migration is in fact responsive to economic fluctuations." (SUMMARY IN FRE, GER)

Some aspects of family composition in Latin America between 1950 and 1970 are discussed based on a review of the published literature. It is shown that mean household size is 5.09 persons. Variations in type of household by country and by educational level of head of household and in female economic activity by type of family are also examined. (summary in ENG, FRE, GER)

Using data from a village in the interior of rural Portugal since 1981, the authors attempt to develop a peasant strategy of emigration. This strategy is defined as the development and expansion of the family's landholdings through earnings obtained by temporary labor migration abroad. The authors conclude that such a strategy has made viable rural economies that might otherwise have foundered. (summary in FRE, GER)

"The essay outlines some possible implications of recent research on demographic patterns for the historical study of rural society in Portugal. The first part is devoted to a summary of population trends since the 16th century, and the need for aggregative studies based on parish registers is emphasised." The author argues "that the available evidence suggests the pertinence of a regional perspective, in which variation across space is given as much prominence as change over time. A number of regional patterns--in mortality, fertility and nuptiality--are described and shown to be associated with regionally specific patterns of household organization. Some implications are suggested of the fact that this regional configuration of family forms and demographic patterns appears to have been in existence and to have persisted since the 16th century." An analysis of household composition and family forms in Portugal is presented using data from the 1960 census for the Minho region. The author questions the hypothesis that identifies a broad regional distinction between a stem family household formation system in the northwest and a neo-local system in the Mediterranean region of the country. The importance of differences in household within the region examined is stressed using the example of the parish of Urgeses in 1878. (summary in FRE, GER)

"Migration flows between states in the [United States] over three decades are analysed using a general spatial interaction model. The role of geographic distance and a more general distance conception are examined, as is the stability of the spatial structure over time. Results imply that although migration structures reflect geographic distance, other stable factors, reflecting idiosyncratic ties between locations, are important as well. This suggests that the common practice in migration research of ignoring spatial structure to focus on individual locations is misleading. The particular ties between locations cannot be ignored in examining total migration at a location at one point in time. In examining changes over time, however, we can limit consideration to the relative draw and sending effects at each location because the spatial structure is quite stable over extended periods."
