The process of leaving the parental home on reaching adulthood is analyzed using data for two cohorts of French women, those born in 1947 and those born in 1959, who were surveyed in 1986. Two alternative ways of establishing adulthood are considered, namely, marriage and the achievement of an academic or professional qualification. The tendency of unmarried adult women to return to the family home is considered. (SUMMARY IN ENG AND GER AND SPA)

The author discusses migration into Germany, primarily since World War II, with a focus on the impact on the German labor market. The radical changes that came about in the late 1980s as a result of granting political asylum to third-world refugees and of the readmittance of persons of German descent who wanted to repatriate are then assessed. Following reunification, the author foresees new trends in migration into the country and predicts some of their effects. (SUMMARY IN ENG AND GER)

Some recent changes in the spatial distribution of the population of Switzerland are analyzed. The authors suggest that "a new equilibrium is taking shape within the repartition of the Swiss population....Especially the interregional migration flows do not seem to have spatial preferences any longer, if we consider the total figures and not their demographic and socio-economic structure. The dichotomy center-periphery is slowing down, but the explanation of the pattern of population distribution lies in an analysis of micro-processus which seems to show a deep change; the population segregation within agglomerations is growing." The author describes the status of refugees displaced by the war in Yugoslavia. It is concluded that "the flight and displacements of population are not only the consequence of the war but also one of its aims: [to] produce ethnically 'pure' territories." Data mainly concern the period from late 1991 to the present. (SUMMARY IN ENG AND GER)

Trends in population decrease in Croatia during the period 1953-1981 are analyzed. The author notes that by 1981, 82.4% of all settlements had experienced a population decline, the majority occurring in rural areas. Demographic characteristics of depopulated areas are examined, including age and sex distribution and educational status. Data are from official and other published sources. (SUMMARY IN ENG AND GER)

Regional differences in the rate of demographic aging in France are examined. The author notes that "contrary to popular belief, of the two factors that contribute to aging, natural trends (births and deaths) still have the edge over the effect of population migrations across regions. The only exception to this is in the Paris area, due to the influence of Paris itself, where youthfulness caused by migrations is on a more or less equal footing with 'natural' aging. Conversely, migration contributes the most to the increase in the average age in the western French regions, with the joint effects of young people leaving and the over-60s returning." The importance of ethnicity in the economic behavior of immigrants to France is examined, with particular reference to immigrant salesmen working in the underground corridors of the Paris metro. The results indicate that having the necessary business skills and initiatives required to survive in this environment are far more important than belonging to a particular ethnic group. "A determining factor in the demographic and employment dynamics of rural communes and certain small towns [in France] is how far they are from the nearest large town. Demographic dynamics and employment trends are somewhat adverse for those living far from urban influences. The main reasons for this would appear to be the slump in agriculture. This said, demographic and employment trends are much improved nearer the large towns, especially since the towns exerting the influence have more inhabitants." (SUMMARY IN ENG AND GER AND SPA)

"Using a certain number of hypotheses on labour efficiency, it is possible to evaluate the impact of reunification on West Germany's growth from 1988 to 1993. The additional growth generated by this increase in the labour force is approximately six points of GDP over the period. From 1989 to 1991, years during which immigration was at its height, the annual growth rate was 1.2 to 1.5 points higher than it would have been had reunification not taken place. Since 1991, this potential growth has been on the downturn and should become moderate in coming years." (SUMMARY IN ENG AND GER AND SPA)

The authors attempt to extend Thelot's analysis of social mobility in France between 1953 and 1970. In particular, they examine "whether observed changes in mobility rates are entirely attributable to 'structural' influences. [They conclude] that while (as Thelot has suggested) the evolution of the occupational structure has been of major importance in altering the amount and pattern of mobility, changes of a systematic kind are none the less still evident when mobility is assessed independently of all structural effects." Data are from two surveys conducted by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (SUMMARY IN ENG, GER, RUS,)
