Various factors contribute to the reflux symptoms such as heartburn and regurgitation in patients with GERD. There have been some reports on delayed gastric emptying or impaired gastric myoelectrical activity in those with GERD. The reason for the direct relationship between reflux symptoms and gastric hypomotility in GERD patients is still unclear. Gastric distension and impaired fundic relaxation as a result of disturbed gastric motility might play a partial role in acid reflux to the esophagus. Gastric hypomotility appears to be an important causative factor in the reflux symptoms in some GERD patients.
