During a 21-month period from April 1974 to February 1976, 948 children with gastroenteritis were studied. Aetiologic agents were identified in 43% of these patients. Isolates were identified as follows: V. cholera El Tor, 273 (67%); Salmonella enteritidis, 64 (16%); enteropathogenic E. coli, 28 (7%); Shigella, 28 (7%); Vibrio (NAG), 9 (2%): and V. parahaemolyticus, 7,2%). Gastroenteritis with dehydration is a serious continuing pediatric problem in Jakarta, constituting 30% of admissions to Sumber Waras hospital. The incidence of both cholera and salmonellosis increased during the past 2 years, as judged by the distribution of enteric bacteria isolated from the rectal swabs of gastroenteritis patients in Sumber Waras hospital.

On the basis of bacteriological and serological studies carried out during two outbreaks of food poisoning it was found that the disease was caused by NAG-vibrios of the I Heiberg group, serotypes 5 and 34 after Sakazaki. The disease was accompanied by isolation of NAG-vibrios from feces and the washings from the stomach, it was characterized by symptoms of acute gastroenteritis and enteritis of mild and moderate severity. The incubation period lasted from 3 to 30 hours. There was an increase in the agglutinin titres to homologous strains of NAG-vibrios. Of the 6 strains tested 4 proved to be enteropathogenic in intraintestinal infection of rabbits in doses of 10(5) microbial cells.

As the result of the serotyping of 1,223 NAG vibrio strains isolated in the Uzbek SSR from the environment and 659 strains isolated from gastroenteritis patients and from vibriocarriers, the serovars of 563 strains (46%) and 420 strains (63%), respectively, were determined. The prevailing serovars were 08, 06, 09, 014, 05, 039, 041, 013, 019 among the strains isolated from the environment and 08, 041, 037, 05, 039, 024, 06 among the strains isolated from humans. The strains belonging to serovars 05, 06, 08, 024, 037, 039, 041 were isolated both from the environment and from humans. The possible role of these strains in the development of acute gastroenteritis and in the formation of vibriocarriership in humans is pointed out.
