During an outbreak of Salmonella typhimurium food poisoning in September 1983, in Sydney, 10 affected subjects were admitted to the same hospital. On admission to hospital, all patients were severely dehydrated; two patients developed acute tubular necrosis, while a third patient had
myopericarditis
. Bacteraemia was confirmed in two patients, in one of whom no organisms were isolated from stool cultures. Antibiotic agents were administered to all patients, because of the unusually severe nature of the infection. This outbreak illustrates that salmonella
gastroenteritis
, although usually fairly mild and self-limiting, can be a virulent disease resulting in serious complications. Appropriate management should include careful initial assessment of suspected cases, vigorous correction of fluid and electrolyte disturbances, and judicious use of antibiotic agents when bacteraemia or severe toxaemic features are present.

Presented here are three cases of acute cardiac disease (myocarditis,
myopericarditis
, and acute atrial fibrillation) associated with Campylobacter jejuni infection, followed by a review of the corresponding literature. Since Campylobacter jejuni is the most common cause of human bacterial enteritis in developed countries, these cases emphasize the importance of keeping cardiac complications in mind when treating patients with acute
gastroenteritis
due to this pathogen.

Two cases of
myopericarditis
associated with Campylobacter jejuni infection in male adolescents are presented. C. jejuni is the most common cause of bacterial
gastroenteritis
worldwide; however, cardiac complications are rare, even in adults. To our knowledge, these are the first reported cases of campylobacter-related
myopericarditis
in adolescents.

Myopericarditis
is an infrequent complication of acute diarrheal illness due to Campylobacter jejuni, and it has been mainly reported in developed nations. The first case detected in Chile--an upper-middle income country--that is coincidental with the increasing importance of acute
gastroenteritis
associated to this pathogen, is described. Recognition of this agent in stools requires special laboratory techniques not widely available, and it was suspected when a young patient presented with acute diarrhea, fever, and chest pain combined with electrocardiogram (EKG) abnormalities and elevated myocardial enzymes. C. jejuni
myopericarditis
can easily be suspected but its detection requires dedicated laboratory techniques.
