In a nationwide survey from January 1978 through September 1979, acute parvovirus-induced myocarditis was identified in 76 of 147 (52%) pups in 19 litters. The affected pups were from 12 states. Birth of all pups registered with the American Kennel Club during this period increased during the spring months, peaking in May, which was correlated in 4 to 8 weeks with the greatest number of cases in the study. Serologic data available for 4 dams, for 6 of their surviving pups, and for 3 contact pups indicated that all had been exposed to parvovirus. In 2 kennels, cases of
acute myocarditis
were preceded within 2 months by cases of severe
gastroenteritis
in older litters on the same premises.

Diarrhoea is a common health problem among travellers worldwide. We focus attention on the recognition of the postinfectious complications of traveller's diarrhoea. An English traveller, aged 43, attended a hospital in Benidorm (Spain) complaining of chest pain. A week previously, fever and severe diarrhoea were present. The electrocardiogram and cardiac enzymes were not normal. The coproculture yielded Campylobacter jejunii.
Acute myocarditis
can be an exceptional complication of
gastroenteritis
masquerading as acute myocardial infarction or leading to congestive heart failure.

Salmonella gastroenteritis is a common, self-limiting, foodborne disease and a rare cause of life-threatening complications especially in immunocompetent individuals. Moreover, bacterial infections of the GI tract have been rarely reported as a cause of serious complications like
acute myocarditis
and rhabdomyolysis. While viral infections are commonly associated with myocarditis, bacterial infections are infrequently seen with these conditions. Similarly, bacterial infections may lead to only 5% of adult rhabdomyolysis events whereas viral-induced myositis appears to be the commonest. A 28-year-old young male with no past medical problems presented with acute salmonella
gastroenteritis
that was complicated by myocardial injury (most likely myocarditis), rhabdomyolysis, acute renal failure, and shock. He made an uneventful complete recovery of all complications by early recognition of these rare complications and prompt institution of appropriate therapy.
