A simple polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) coating procedure was used for the development of stable modified capillaries. PEM coatings were constructed in fused-silica capillaries using alternating rinses of cationic and anionic polyelectrolytes. The multilayer coatings investigated in this study consisted of two and twenty layer pairs, or bilayers. A bilayer is one layer of a cationic polymer and one layer of an anionic polymer.

(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) was used as the cationic polymer, and the polymeric surfactant poly(sodium N-undecanoyl-L-leucylvalinate) was used as the anionic polymer. Previous studies for both chiral and achiral separations have shown that PEM-coated capillaries have excellent reproducibilities, remarkable endurance, and strong stabilities against extreme pH values when used in open-tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC). In this study, the stability of the coatings was further investigated after exposure to 0.1 M and 1.0 M NaOH. Structural changes of these coatings were monitored using laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM) after
flushing
the capillaries with NaOH. This technique allowed observation of the degradation of the coatings. Observations are discussed in terms of separations using OT-CEC. Electropherograms obtained from the chiral separation of 1,1'-binaphthyl-2,2'-dihydrogenphosphate in OT-CEC showed a decrease in selectivity and an increase in electroosmotic mobility after long exposure to NaOH. The ability to recover the capillaries by exposure to NaOH was also demonstrated. Measurements of electroosmotic mobility and selectivity showed that 2-bilayer and 20-bilayer PEM coatings could be completely removed from the capillary surface after approximately 3.5 and 9.5 h, respectively, of continuous exposure to 1 M NaOH.

(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) was the only reducing and stabilizing agent for Au NPs preparation. Stable and repeatable coating with good tolerance to 0.1 M HCl, methanol, and ACN was obtained via a simple rinsing procedure. Au NPs enhanced the coating stability toward

by methanol, improved the run-to-run and capillary-to-capillary repeatabilities, and improved the separation efficiency of heroin and its basic impurities for tracing geographical origins of illicit samples. Baseline resolution of eight heroin-related alkaloids was achieved on the PDDA-protected Au NPs-coated capillary under the optimum conditions: 120 mM ammonium acetate (pH 5.2) with addition of 13% methanol, separation temperature 20 degrees C, applied voltage -20 kV, and capillary effective length 60.0 cm. CE-MS analysis with run-to-run RSDs (n=5) of migration time in the range of 0.43-0.62% and RSDs (n=5) of peak area in the range of 1.49-4.68% was obtained. The established CE-MS method would offer sensitive detection and confident identification of heroin and related compounds and provide an alternative to LC-MS and GC-MS for illicit drug control.

Photobleaching is the main limiting factor in single molecule studies by optical techniques. We investigated the dependence of photostability of terrylene diimide (TDI) derivative on its environment using confocal fluorescence microscopy. Seven different polymers were tested. Depending on the matrix, photobleaching quantum yields vary by 2 orders of magnitude. Their values correlate with parameters characterizing oxygen mobility in polymers: diffusion coefficient and permeability.

the sample with nitrogen, which confirms the involvement of oxygen in photodestruction. Different character of the time traces of the intensity of emission from single TDI molecules is observed for different polymer matrices, ranging from intense blinking in the least stable polycarbonate, to practically no blinking in the most stable PVC. These results suggest a photodegradation mechanism involving self-sensitized photooxidation in oxygen complexes of TDI.

-isopropylacrylamide (PNIPAAm) hydrogels, known for their sensor and actuator capabilities, can be photolithographically structured for microsystem applications. For usage in microsystems, the preparation, and hence the characteristics, of these hydrogels (e.g., degree of swelling, size, cooperative diffusion coefficient) are key features, and have to be as reproducible as possible. A common method of hydrogel fabrication is free radical polymerisation using a thermally-initiated system or a photoinitiator system. Due to the reaction quenching by oxygen, the polymer solution has to be rinsed with protective inert gases like nitrogen or argon before the polymerisation process. In this paper, we focus on the preparation reproducibility of PNIPAAm hydrogels under different conditions, and investigate the influence of oxygen and the UV light source during the photopolymerisation process. The

of the polymer solution with inert gas is not sufficient for photostructuring approaches, so a glove box preparation resulting in better quality. Moreover, the usage of a wide-band UV light source yields higher reproducibility to the photostructuring process compared to a narrow-band UV source.
