Sludge liquor from the sludge dewatering process has a high ammonia content. In the present study, a lab-scale electrochemical (EC) system with a pair of Ti electrode plates was used for treating the sludge centrate liquor of digested wastewater sludge with a NH4(+) - N content of around 500 mg/L. The sludge liquor had a high salinity due to seawater being used for toilet
flushing
in Hong Kong. The results show that the EC process is highly effective for denitrification of the saline sludge liquor. Complete
nitrogen
removal could be achieved within 1 hr or so. The rate of EC denitrification increased with the current intensity applied. The best current efficiency for
nitrogen
removal was obtained for a gap distance between the electrodes at 8 mm. Electro-chlorination was considered to be the major mechanism of EC denitrification. The formation of chlorination by-products (CBPs) appeared to be minimal with the total trihalomethanes (THM) detected at a level of 300 microg/L or lower. The power consumption for EC denitrification was around 23 kWh/kg N. Additional electro-flocculation with a pair of iron needle electrodes could enhance the flocculation and subsequent sedimentation of colloidal organics in the sludge liquor, increasing the organic removal from less than 30% to more than 70%. Therefore, the EC process including both electro-denitrification and electro-flocculation can be developed as the most cost-effective method for treatment of the saline sludge liquor.

The effect of short-term reservoir
flushing
on downstream water quality in the Geum River, Korea was studied using field experiments and computer simulations. The reservoir release was increased from 30 to 200 m(3)/s within 6 h for the purpose of this experiment. The
flushing
discharge decreased the concentrations of soluble
nitrogen
and phosphorus species considerably, but the experimental results revealed a negative impact on organic forms of nutrients and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD). A dynamic river water quality model was applied to simulate the river hydraulics and water quality variations during the event. The model showed very good performance in predicting the travel time of
flushing
flow and the variations of dissolved forms of
nitrogen
and phosphorus constituents. However, it revealed a limited capability in simulating organic forms of nutrients and BOD because it does not consider the re-suspension mechanism of these constituents from sediment during the wave front passage.

Synchronized Chinese hamster cells were irradiated in air and in
nitrogen
at various points in the cell cycle. The irradiations were carried out after
flushing
with air or
nitrogen
with the medium removed from the mono-layer of cells. Under these conditions the dose-modifying factor, or oxygen enhancement ratio, was between 2.0 and 2.3 for survival in asynchronous cells. The variation in x-ray sensitivity evident as the cell progresses through its cycle was not differentially affected by its state of oxygenation at the time of irradiation. The x-ray age-response curves for irradiation in air and in
nitrogen
were similar at each point, except for the dose-modifying factor. This was true not only for the cells of a normal short generation time (10 hours) subline of the V79 line but also for a longer generation time (with longer GC period) subline derived from a "small colony". The variation in radiosensitivity as the cell progresses through its cycle must therefore be due to factors other than change in oxygen tension within the cell. The fact that the same variation in x-ray sensitivity with age exists for hypoxic cells as for well-oxygenated cells has a bearing on the radiotherapy of tumors which contain cells at low oxygen tensions.

Enhancement of the chemical stability of ascorbyl palmitate (AP) after incorporation into nanostructured lipid carriers (NLC) has been reported. However, the formulation parameters of AP-loaded NLC have not been completely investigated. Moreover, the long-term chemical stability of AP in any colloidal systems has not been yet achieved. Therefore, in this study the formulation parameters affecting the stability of AP after incorporation into NLC were evaluated including types of lipids, types of surfactants, storage conditions, i.e. temperature and

, the effects of drug loading as well as types of antioxidants. After storage for 90 days, the mean particle size analyzed by photon correlation spectroscopy (PCS) was lower than 350 nm. The zeta potential measured by the Zetasizer IV was higher than -30 mV in all developed AP-loaded NLC formulations which varied according to the types of lipid and surfactant. Concerning the chemical stability of AP, it was found that AP-loaded NLC prepared and stored in non-degassing conditions, a higher percentage of AP loading in NLC, lower storage temperature (4 degrees C), addition of antioxidants as well as selection of suitable surfactants and solid lipids improved the chemical stability of AP. Moreover, an improvement of long-term chemical stability of AP was achieved by addition of antioxidants with
nitrogen
gas

The factors controlling spatial and temporal patterns in soil solution and streamwater chemistry are highly uncertain in northern hardwood forest ecosystems in the northeastern United States, where concentrations of reactive
nitrogen
(Nr) in streams have surprisingly declined over recent decades in the face of persistent high rates of atmospheric Nr deposition and aging forests. Reactive
nitrogen
includes inorganic species (e.g., ammonium [NH4+], nitrate [NO3-]) and some organic forms (e.g., amino acids) available to support the growth of plants and microbes. The objective of this study was to examine controls on the spatial and temporal patterns in the concentrations and fluxes of
nitrogen
(N) species and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in a 12-year record of soil solutions and streamwater along an elevational gradient (540-800 m) of a forested watershed at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest (HBEF) in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, USA. Dissolved organic N and DOC concentrations were elevated in the high-elevation spruce-fir-white birch (SFB) zone of the watershed, while NO3- was the dominant N species in the lower elevation hardwood portion of the watershed. Within the soil profile, N retention was centered in the mineral horizon, and significant amounts of N were retained between the lower mineral soil and the stream, supporting the idea that near- and in-stream processes are significant sinks for N at the HBEF. Temporal analysis suggested that hydrologic flow paths can override both abiotic and biotic retention mechanisms (i.e., during the non-growing season when most hydrologic export occurs, or during years with high rainfall), there appears to be direct
flushing
of N from the organic horizons into the stream via horizontal flow. Significant correlations between soil NO3- concentrations, nitrification rates and streamwater NO3- exports show the importance of biological production as a regulator of inorganic N export. The lack of internal production response (e.g., mineralization, nitrification) to a severe ice storm in 1998 reinforces the idea that plant uptake is the dominant regulator of export response to disturbance.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the physicochemical stability of carbohydrate-anchored liposomes. In the present study, carbohydrate (galactose, fucose, and mannose) was palmitoylated and anchored on the surface of positively charged liposomes (PL). The stabilities of plain neutral liposomes (NL), PL, and O-palmitoyl carbohydrate-anchored liposomes were determined. The effects of storage conditions (4 degrees C +/- 2 degrees C, 25 degrees C +/- 2 degrees C/60% +/- 5% relative humidity [RH], or 40 degrees C +/- 2 degrees C/75% +/- 5% RH for a period of 10, 20, and 30 days) were observed on the vesicle size, shape, zeta potential, drug content, and in vitro ligand agglutination assay by keeping the liposomal formulations in sealed amber-colored vials (10-mL capacity) after
flushing
with
nitrogen
. The stability of liposomal formulations was found to be temperature dependent. All the liposomal formulations were found to be stable at 4 degrees C +/- 2 degrees C up to 1 month. Storage at 25 degrees C +/- 2 degrees C/60% +/- 5% RH and 40 degrees C +/- 2 degrees C/75% +/- 5% RH adversely affected uncoated liposomal formulations. Carbohydrate coating of the liposomes could enhance the stability of liposomes at 25 degrees C +/- 2 degrees C/60% +/- 5% RH and 40 degrees C +/- 2 degrees C/75% +/- 5% RH.

We demonstrate a novel nonintrusive technique based on tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy to investigate human sinuses in vivo. The technique relies on the fact that free gases have spectral imprints that are about 10.000 times sharper than spectral structures of the surrounding tissue. Two gases are detected; molecular oxygen at 760 nm and water vapor at 935 nm. Light is launched fiber optically into the tissue in close proximity to the particular maxillary sinus under study. When investigating the frontal sinuses, the fiber is positioned onto the caudal part of the frontal bone. Multiply scattered light in both cases is detected externally by a handheld probe. Molecular oxygen is detected in the maxillary sinuses on 11 volunteers, of which one had constantly recurring sinus problems. Significant oxygen absorption imprint differences can be observed between different volunteers and also left-right asymmetries. Water vapor can also be detected, and by normalizing the oxygen signal on the water vapor signal, the sinus oxygen concentration can be assessed. Gas exchange between the sinuses and the nasal cavity is also successfully demonstrated by

through the nostril. Advantages over current ventilation assessment methods using ionizing radiation are pointed out.

This paper describes a semi-empirical approach to modeling the soil

technology. A new mathematical model aimed at predicting the course of the continuous soil
flushing
process by use of the input data obtained from simple batch laboratory experiments is described in the theoretical part. An objective of the study is to apply this new model to soil polluted by zinc and copper (11949 mg kg(-1) and 1895 mg kg(-1), respectively) by
flushing
the soil with an ammonia
nitrogen
solution. A set of batch experiments provided both equilibrium and kinetic data characterizing the leaching ability of both metals. By use of the model, the optimal ammonia concentration in the
flushing
solution was estimated (0.6 mol L(-1)). For this concentration, validity of the model results was verified by a column experiment. The removal efficiency obtained was 44% (zinc) and 54% (copper). The model correctly predicted the period of time needed for the removal of weakly bound metal fractions as well as the estimate of the overall removal efficiency of metals from the soil during the
flushing
process. It has also proven that it is possible to use the column experiment for model calibration through the modification of the input data. Agreement of the model and experimental results can be further improved this way.

Gangliosides are a family of sialic acid-containing glycosphingolipids that are abundant in neurons and have a variety of functions in developing and mature tissues. We examined the expression of ganglioside GT1b in the embryonic preimplantation stage after freezing and thawing processes to determine the regulatory roles of ganglioside GT1b in early embryonic development. ICR mouse embryos at the two-cell stage obtained by
flushing
the oviducts were frozen by two cryopreservation procedures, slow freezing using a programmable freezer or vitrification by direct plunging into liquid
nitrogen
. Slow freezing was conducted with equilibration in 1.5 M 1,2-propanediol or 5% equilibration glycerol. Vitrification was applied with a 10-15 min equilibration in 7.5% ethylene glycol (EG), 7.5% dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), and 30 sec in a solution of 15% EG, 15% DMSO and 0.5 M sucrose. Immediately after thawing, the survival rate of the embryos was assessed by their morphology and ability to develop to blastocysts in culture. The survival rate of vitrified and thawed embryos (92%) was significantly higher than that of slow frozen and thawed embryos (76%) (P<0.05). A tendency of higher blastocyst rate was found in the vitrified and thawed embryos compared to that of the slow frozen and thawed embryos. Confocal immunofluorescence staining confirmed that surviving embryos expressed ganglioside GT1b, with the strongest expression at the compacted eight-cell or later stage embryos. Ganglioside GT1b was not observed in the TUNEL-positive, apoptotic embryos, suggesting that cryopreservation had induced DNA breaks in them. These results suggest that ganglioside GT1b may play an important role in embryo survival or development.
