An overview of dermatological diseases which occur in conjunction with oral contraceptive (o.c.) use is presented. An increase in pigmentation during o.c. use is attributed to an increase in the binding of cortisol with transcortin caused by the estrogen component, which leads to an increase in melanin-stimulating hormone production. Sebum production is decreased during o.c. use, which has a beneficial effect in cases of acne and seborrhea oleosa. This effect is most pronounced with preparations containing chlormadinon acetate, which has an antiandrogenic effect. O.C. use can influence hair growth by disturbing the balance between anagenic and telogenic hairs. Androgenetic alopecia is most often caused by preparations containing nortestosterone. Peroral dermatitits, lupus erythmatodes visceralis and similar disorders, and allergic skin reactions have been observed among o.c. users. Porphyria cutanea tarda is generally found in young women in conjunction with o.c. use, which can be related to liver dysfunctions. Vaginal candidosis is also more frequently found among o.c. users, particularly in conjunction with combination preparations.

gestationes can occur during o.c. use, mainly among women who developed it during pregnancy. Progesterone appears to be responsible for provoking the condition. 166 patients who developed dermatological disorders during o.c. use were studied according to the preparation each used. Acne vulgaris improved more frequently among Ovosiston users. A marked increase in vaginal fluor indicated an increase in trichomoniasis and candida mycosis. In all observed cases of porphyria cutanea tarda, liver damage (hepatitis, cyrrhosis, or
fatty liver
) could be ascertained.

During pregnancy, the future mother can develop several different diseases. Most of them have a benign prognosis. Cyanotic heart disease, at least when it is accompanied by significant pulmonary hypertension or induces a functional class IV represents a contra-indication to pregnancy. Pregnancy cardiomyopathy generally carries a poor prognosis and may be responsible for the mother's death.
Herpes
virus pneumopathy can also be extremely dangerous. Lupus erythematosus represents a factor of guarded prognosis for the outcome of pregnancy; discontinuation of the latter should be seriously considered.

which is a rare diagnosis must be distinguished from Hellp syndrome in which the maternal prognosis is much better. In this review, we shall briefly discuss various medical diseases which may have a deleterious influence on the evolution of pregnancy or on the foetus. These deleterious influences can be direct, i.e. due to the disease, or indirect, i.e. due to the therapy. We shall successively consider several neurological, cardiological, pulmonary, dermatological and digestive diseases. We shall not take into account viral infections or infections in general, diabetes mellitus or the various vasculo-renal syndromes.

In distinguishing normal from abnormal hepatic changes, the author described the expected changes in liver tests that occur during complicated pregnancy. This article reviews the forms of pre-existing liver disease that may affect or be affected by pregnancy, as well as liver diseases that tend to arise during pregnancy. Among the pre-existing liver diseases are autoimmune chronic active hepatitis, which may be activated by pregnancy and tends to be associated with an increased risk of still and premature births. Worsening of chronic hepatitis B and C has occasionally been observed. While some women with cirrhosis can sustain a normal pregnancy without any worsening of hepatic function, others develop liver failure; plus, women with cirrhosis are less fertile and have higher rates of both stillbirths and premature infants. Other liver disorders that may or may not be affected by pregnancy include Dubin-Johnson syndrome, Gilbert syndrome, benign recurrent intrahepatic cholestasis, Wilson's disease, hepatic adenomas, and focal nodular hyperplasia. Among the hepatic disorders that occur during pregnancy in normally healthy women and then resolve after delivery is intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (also known as pruritus gravidarum, recurrent intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy, and obstetric hepatosis). fatty liver
of pregnancy and HELLP syndrome (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelet count), which may be part of the spectrum of disorders associated with pre-eclampsia/eclampsia. Pregnancy may also trigger the dissemination of

A female, adult ornate box turtle (Terrapene ornata ornata) with
fatty liver
was submitted for virologic examination in Hungary. Signs of an adenovirus infection including degeneration of the liver cells, enlarged nuclei and intranuclear inclusion bodies were detected by light microscopic examination. The presence of an adenovirus was later confirmed by obtaining partial sequence data from the adenoviral DNA-dependent DNA-polymerase. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that this novel chelonian adenovirus was distinct from previously described reptilian adenoviruses, not belonging to any of the recognized genera of the family Adenoviridae. As a part of the routine diagnostic procedure for chelonians the detection of

-, rana- and iridoviruses together with Mycoplasma spp. was attempted. Amplicons were generated by a general mycoplasma polymerase chain reaction (PCR) targeting the 16S/23S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) intergenic spacer region, as well as, a specific Mycoplasma agassizii PCR targeting the 16S rRNA gene. Based on the analyses of partial sequences of the 16S rRNA gene, the Mycoplasma sp. of the ornate box turtle seemed to be identical with the recently described eastern box turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina) Mycoplasma sp. This is the first report of a novel chelonian adenovirus and a mycoplasma infection in an ornate box turtle (T. ornata ornata) in Europe.

The statistics proved that approximately 25% of the patients with acute HCV present with jaundice, and only 10-20% develop gastrointestinal symptoms. We present the case of a 58 year-old woman, with prior antecedents of arterial hypertension and diabetes mellitus since 25 years old, hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia, psoriasis, epilepsy and depressive syndrome. She clinically presents asthenia, anorexia, itching, jaundice and choluria. The objective examination showed an orientated patient, without flapping, hemorrhagic dyscrasia or signs of chronic hepatic disease, with icteric mucosa and skin, abdominal pain, with hepatomegaly and splenomegaly. The laboratory tests have been compatible with acute hepatitis with colestatic pattern: AST/ALT 969/798 UI/ml, FA 796 UI/ml, GGT 2476 UI/ml, BT/BD 7.39/6.10, INR 0.9. The abdominal echography showed: hepatomegaly, regular borders,

virus, Epstein Barr, HIV), positive antibodies for HCV and positive RNA VHC (164200 UI/ml), HCV genotype 3a, IL-28B CT, negative autoimmunity. The previous HCV tests were negative, sustaining the recent infection. We assumed an acute hepatitis C. The patient was symptomatically treated with hydroxyzine for the skin itch, with vitamin K for INR correction and she was closely monitored. She had good clinical and laboratorial evolution and she was discharged after one week, maintaining hepatology consultation. She spontaneously cleared HCV infection after 3 months, maintaining negative RNA VHC 6 months after infection. The patient has cured the HCV infection with no need for antiviral treatment.
