The purpose of this review was to define compassion
fatigue
in the context of palliative care nursing. Compassion
fatigue
was first introduced as a description for nursing burnout; however, it was not fully described. An initial concept analysis within nursing placed it in terms of a psychological model for secondary traumatic stress disorder, with continual revisions of this application. Palliative care nurses are routinely exposed to pain, trauma, and the suffering they witness by nature of ongoing symptom management and end-of-life care delivery; however, the focus of care is on healthy end-of-life management rather than preservation of life. The literature was reviewed to provide clarification of compassion
fatigue
for palliative care nurses to assist in future identification and direction in the profession. CINAHL, EBSCO, Journals@Ovid, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, PubMed, and ScienceDirect databases were queried for peer-reviewed literature, and dictionaries were examined for subject-specific definitions. The method that was used was a concept analysis in the tradition of
Walker
and Avant. A concept definition was proposed for the discipline of palliative care nursing. Identification of compassion
fatigue
for this profession helps facilitate the recognition of symptoms for a group that deals with patient suffering on a regular basis.

Using
Walker
and Avant's approach, a concept analysis was performed to develop a working definition of caregiver
fatigue
. Defining attributes of caregiver
fatigue
identified were "fell into role" by default, outside the norm of role expectations, excess caregiving demand, and exposure to prolonged period of caregiving. Model, related, and contrary cases were developed. Antecedent, consequences, and empirical referent of caregiver
fatigue
were also identified. Lastly, a working definition of caregiver
fatigue
was developed.

Compassion
fatigue
has been documented in the nursing and allied health literature as an emerging issue for health professionals. Little is known regarding the experience of compassion
fatigue
in undergraduate, pre-licensure students entering health care professions. This study used
Walker
and Avant's concept analysis methodology to explain antecedents, attributes, and consequences of compassion
fatigue
in undergraduate, pre-licensure students. Exploration of the published literature from January 1992-April 2020 occurred using systematic review criteria based on the Joanna Briggs Institute. Findings revealed three antecedents that included:
Coping Ability
;
Self-Efficacy
; and
Clinical and Occupational Hazards
. Three defining attributes of compassion
fatigue
included:
Psychological Stress
;
Witnessing Negative Experiences of Others
; and
Depression
. Consequences included:
Decreased Well-Being
; and
Program Withdrawal and Intention-to-Leave
. The results offer new perspectives and opportunities for research in pre-licensure health studies undergraduate students expected to uphold the values of their professional program prior to entry into the workforce.
