The properties of selenium electrocardiographic plates used for the purposes of medical diagnosis are under discussion. The plates are observed to reveal no noticeable traces of fatigue and to retain constant sensitivity to radiation and radiography in the case of the 5 to 10 minutes' interval between obtaining electroradiograms (ERG) during working hours (7 hours). After the technical resource which is equal to 2000 ERG is over, the radiation sensitivity decreases to 10% and defectiveness does not exceed 25%. The actual expiration date of the plates is between 7 and 9 years without worsening of their properties. The quality of the plates stored for a longer time might deteriorate due to the defect which is attributed to crystallization of the selenium layer.

The effects of vitamins, minerals and amino acids supply were recorded in a group of 20 top junior cyclists by a double blind, controlled trial for four weeks. Ten top junior cyclists received orally 1 tablet Cantamega-2000, daily at breakfast, as supplement of food, for four weeks, while other 10 junior cyclists (members of the same team), having the same program of training (2 hours daily on road, about 80 km), the same controlled food and being under medical supervision, received 2 tablets of Polivitaminizant S (Romanian product which contains 9 vitamins), also at breakfast. Significant and favourable changes were recorded in the group treated by Cantamega-2000 (vitamins, minerals, amino acids, selenium and others) for the total calcium, magnesium, haemoglobin and proteins in serum, comparing to the control group, which received Polivitaminizant S. At the same time we noticed a faster metabolic (urine mucoproteins) and fatigue recovery after Cantamega-2000 supply. Serum cholesterol and GPT did not change significantly in both groups. Based on these data, the authors recommend a supply of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and selenium ratio, by 1 tablet Cantamega-2000, daily at breakfast, including the days of competitions, for cyclists, in order to improve the biological potential of the body and accelerate recovery after exercise.

The possibility that a subclinical deficiency of the trace element selenium might exist in a sample of the British population was examined by giving a selenium supplement for 5 weeks. Using a double-blind cross-over design, 50 subjects received either a placebo or 100 mcg selenium on a daily basis. On three occasions they filled in the Profile of Moods States. A food frequency questionnaire was used to estimate the intake of selenium in the diet. Intake was associated with a general elevation of mood and in particular, a decrease in anxiety. The change in mood when taking the active tablet was correlated with the level of selenium in the diet, which was estimated from a food frequency questionnaire. The lower the level of selenium in the diet the more reports of anxiety, depression, and tiredness, decreased following 5 weeks of selenium therapy. The results are discussed in terms of the low level of selenium in the food chain in some parts of the world.

Copper refinery workers exposed to selenium were studied before, during, and after a shutdown period. Urine selenium levels were 83 +/- 30 mumol/mol creatinine and 69 +/- 27 mumol/mol creatinine when measured on two occasions during exposure compared with 56 +/- 17 mumol/mol creatinine when the workers had been free of exposure for 10 wk during a shutdown. The refinery workers reported more nose and eye irritation, indigestion, stomach pain, and fatigue than controls. "Garlic-like" breath odor was reported to be personally and socially offensive by many of the workers. Reporting of symptoms, pulmonary function indices, and laboratory test results did not change with exposure except for hemoglobin level, which rose during the shutdown. Hemoglobin levels were found to be inversely correlated with the urine selenium level, and there was a positive correlation noted for the interactive effect of urine selenium and urine arsenic levels on hemoglobin.

An apparent epidemic of undiagnosed illness in a rural general practice was investigated. The aims were to describe the illness, the characteristics of the people affected, and to look for possible causes. The patients were questioned about their symptoms, and both patients and controls matched for age and sex, were questioned about possible aetiological factors. Twenty-eight cases were identified; all but three were less than 45 years of age; there were equal numbers of females and males. The most commonly experienced symptoms were tiredness, mood and sleep disturbances, headache, and joint or muscle pains. Results of the case-control study suggested that pollution of the water supply, zoonotic infections, contact with agricultural chemicals, and self-dosing with selenium were unlikely to be causes of this illness. An unidentified virus was regarded as the most likely cause.

There is compelling evidence that micronutrients can profoundly affect immunity. We surveyed vitamin supplement use and circulating concentrations of 22 nutrients and glutathione in 64 HIV-1 seropositive men and women and 33 seronegative controls participating in a study of heterosexual HIV-1 transmission. We assayed antioxidants (vitamins A, C, and E; total carotenes), vitamins B6 and B12, folate, thiamin, niacin, biotin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid, free and total choline and carnitine, biopterin, inositol, copper, zinc, selenium, and magnesium. HIV-infected patients had lower mean circulating concentrations of magnesium (p < 0.0001), total carotenes (p = 0.009), total choline (p = 0.002), and glutathione (p = 0.045), and higher concentrations of niacin (p < 0.0001) than controls. Fifty-nine percent of HIV+ patients had low concentrations of magnesium, compared with 9% of controls (p < 0.0001). These abnormal concentrations were unrelated to stage of disease. Participants who took vitamin supplements had consistently fewer low concentrations of antioxidants, across HIV infection status and disease stage strata (p = 0.0006). Nevertheless, 29% of the HIV+ patients taking supplemental vitamins had subnormal levels of one or more antioxidants. The frequent occurrence of abnormal micronutrient nutriture, as found in these HIV+ subjects, may contribute to disease pathogenesis. The low magnesium concentrations may be particularly relevant to HIV-related symptoms of fatigue, lethargy, and impaired mentation.

Nineteen workers exposed to low levels of selenium (0.047-0.202 mg/m3 air) along with 15 control subjects were studied for clinical, hematological, radiological, and neurobehavioral variables in relation to selenium concentration in hair. The levels of selenium in the hair of exposed subjects (1.44 +/- 0.37 micrograms/g) were significantly higher than those of control subjects (0.78 +/- 0.18 microgram/g). The levels of selenium in the hair of 22 nonvegetarian subjects were found to be significantly higher as compared to 12 vegetarian subjects. Complaints of weakness and/or fatigue were found to be more prevalent in the exposed subjects. The study holds promise that hair selenium may be used as a monitoring tool for low-level occupational exposure to selenium.

Diaphragmatic fatigue has been associated with increased production of reactive oxygen species. Among the defenses against reactive oxygen species is the glutathione redox system. The selenium-dependent enzyme glutathione peroxidase is an important component of this system. Thus, we hypothesized that selenium deficiency would lower glutathione peroxidase activity and render the diaphragm more susceptible to a mild exertional protocol. Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a selenium-deficient or control diet for 12 weeks then divided into four experimental groups: (1) unloaded, basic diet with selenium supplementation (control); (2) unloaded, selenium-deficient diet; (3) loaded, basic diet with selenium supplementation; and (4) loaded, selenium-deficient diet. Diaphragmatic in vitro contractile properties, glutathione peroxidase activity and glutathione content were measured. During inspiratory resistive loading, the animals breathed against an inspiratory resistor at 70% of maximal airway pressure until the target pressure was not achieved for five consecutive breaths. Selenium deficiency resulted in a significant decrease in diaphragmatic glutathione peroxidase activity, without changes in total glutathione content. Neither selenium deficiency nor inspiratory resistive loading alone impaired diaphragmatic contractility. Selenium deficiency in conjunction with inspiratory resistive loading resulted in a significant decrease in diaphragmatic twitch and tetanic force, with a downward shift in the force/frequency curve. These data suggest that selenium deficiency lowers diaphragmatic glutathione peroxidase activity, and when these animals are subjected to the oxidative stress of resistive loading, there is an impairment in muscle function. We conclude that a functional glutathione peroxidase is necessary to protect the diaphragm against the effects of resistive loading.

A proline-rich polypeptide (PRP) complex, subsequently called Colostrinin, was isolated from ovine colostrum. The complex showed immunomodulatory properties in mice, rats, and chickens, inducing maturation and differentiation of thymocytes. It was recently found that Colostrinin is a cytokine-like factor that acts as an inducer of interferon gamma (IFN-gamma) and other cytokines in human peripheral blood and cord blood leukocyte cultures and has psycho-immuno-enhancing activity in volunteers. These observations prompted us to study the effect of Colostrinin on patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Forty six AD patients were divided into 3 groups and randomly assigned to receive orally either Colostrinin (100 microg per tablet, every second day), commercially available bioorganic selenium (100 microg selenium per tablet, every second day) or placebo tablets. One cycle of the treatment lasted 3 weeks and was separated from the next cycle by a 2 week hiatus. Each patient received 10 cycles of treatment during the year of the clinical trial. Outcomes were assessed by psychiatrists blinded to the treatment assignment. Eight of the 15 AD patients treated with Colostrinin improved and in the 7 others the disease had stabilized. In contrast, none of the 31 patients from the selenium or placebo groups with similar mild or moderate AD improved. The administration of selenium promoted stabilization in 13 of the 15 patients, whereas in the placebo group only 8 of the 16 patients were stabilized at the 12 month trials end-evaluation. Colostrinin was found to be a remarkably safe drug. Mild and transient effects were anxiety, stimulation, insomnia, and tiredness. The results obtained showed that oral administration of Colostrinin improves the outcome of AD patients with mild to moderate dementia. The results are very encouraging and deserve further research.

Successful restoration of the immune system and eradication of any chronic infection, possibly including cancer, requires the ability of healthy cells to process and present foreign antigens on the cell's surface. Areas addressed include: (1) defining a foreign antigen; (2) discussing how certain viruses, such as HIV, can evade an effective immune response; and (3) describing factors that depress antigen presentation, i.e., low ATP and L-glutathione levels. Excerpts from a report on the use of glutathione and ATP injections for improving immune function in patients with Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (CFID) are presented. Results indicate that 226 out of 276 patients receiving injections reported less fatigue, 196 experienced improvement in memory and concentration, and 171 experienced lower levels of pain. Comments from CFID patients who used injectable glutathione are included. The link between high viral load, loss of DTH, and low glutathione levels is discussed. Using selenium to increase glutathione levels, lower beta 2 microglobulin levels, fight cancer, and improve survival in AIDS is also discussed. The reasons that cell metabolism needs healthy liver function and coenzymated B vitamins are given. Products and protocols that can improve ATP production, cell metabolism, and increased levels of glutathione and the treatments and factors that improve, and suppress, antigen presentation are summarized.
