This report describes a test of the prediction, made by Teichner in 1974, that on visual vigilance tasks dynamic stimuli result in greater performance decrements than do static stimuli. For correct detections and sensitivity there was only a nonsignificant trend in the predicted direction, but for response latency (RT) the prediction was supported. Positional uncertainty within displays did not affect vigilance performance. Teichner's assumption that ocular demand is responsible for the impairing effect of dynamic stimuli is questioned. Depletion of central capacity rather than an ocular effect may explain deteriorating performance. Just as in studies of visual
fatigue
, the contributions of central and modality-specific impairing effects are difficult to separate.

The purpose of this study was to ascertain the effects of high, moderate, and low physical
fatigue
on performing the shot put, a sport skill that requires explosive muscular effort. 44 subjects practiced the shot put until mastery was achieved. They then experienced one of four
fatigue
intensities during a 20-trial practice period (no
fatigue
, 45, 60 or 75% of their predicted maximum oxygen uptake) to induce light, moderate, or heavy
fatigue
, respectively, after which subjects then engaged in criterion performance for 5 trials under each of the
fatigue
intensities, with one week in between. Distance thrown and expert assessment of performance technique were dependent variables. Analysis indicated that criterion performance was optimal for both distance and form after subjects experienced light
fatigue
during practice and criterion performance. The specificity of practice hypothesis was partially supported for the light
fatigue
condition, but not for the other intensities.

Assessment of cognitive and motor performance of bone marrow transplant patients prior to, during, and following intensive toxic chemoradiotherapy may provide an important adjunct to measures of physiological and medical status. The present study is an attempt to assess whether, as side-effects, these aggressive treatments result in cognitive performance deficits, and if so, whether such changes recover posttreatment. Measurement of cognitive ability in this situation presents special problems not encountered with one-time tests intended for healthy adults. Such tests must be sensitive to changes within a single individual, which emphasizes the crucial importance of high reliability, stability across repeated-measures, and resistance to confounding factors such as motivation and
fatigue
. The present research makes use of a microbased portable test battery developed to have reliable and sensitive tests which were adapted to study the special requirements of transplant patients who may suffer cognitive deficits as a result of treatment. The results showed slight but significant changes in neuropsychological capacity when compared to baseline levels and controls, particularly near the beginning of treatment. The sensitivity of the battery in detecting such subtle temporary changes is discussed in terms of past research showing effects of other stressors, such as stimulated high altitude and ingestion of alcohol, on these measures.

In several studies attributing positive health benefits to running, the benefits include reduced depression,
fatigue
, anger, and increased vigor. Until now, little research has focused on Masters track and field athletes. The present study reports on 587 men and women Masters who participated in a mailed survey measuring mood states using the Profile of Mood States. In comparison to other groups of athletes, these Masters tend to be less depressed, less angry, and less fatigued. Attribution to lifestyle and maturity with their sport is discussed.

Two experiments are reported which investigated the effects of fasting on visual flicker fusion (VFF). In Exp. 1 the VFF of 40 undergraduate students, 20 men and 20 women, whose mean age was 22.5 yr., was measured in nonfasting conditions 1 to 2 weeks before and in fasting conditions during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan. In Exp. 2 the VFF of a comparable group of 15 men and 15 women, whose mean age was 23.2 yr., was measured in a different month in both fasting and nonfasting conditions. Subjects were assigned randomly to these two conditions. Analysis shows that fasting reduced VFF significantly in both experiments. This finding indicates that fasting is likely to reduce perceptual sensitivity. The results were explained in terms of
fatigue
and physical exhaustion effects produced by fasting.

An analysis has been made of the records of 23 cases of resection-reconstruction of the shafts of long bones for a variety of tumours of bone. Four were in the humerus, four in the forearm bones, five in the femur and ten in the tibia. The reconstructed bone was stabilised by an intramedullary nail in thirteen cases and by a plate or blade-plate in five cases. In five cases, the grafts were simply held by screws. The bone was reconstructed by an autograft in thirteen cases and by allograft in ten cases, four of which were combined with an autograft. Resections in the upper limb gave rise to few complications. Conversely, reconstructions in the lower limbs, particularly of the tibia, were associated with a significant number of complications because of infection and delayed union. The best fixation, when it was technically possible, was an intramedullary nail surrounded by autografts. Allografts, and the vascularised fibular graft, were very liable to secondary
fatigue
fracture. A combination of autograft and allograft needs to be considered if a sufficient quantity of autograft is not available.

The experimental findings on memory deficits from hospitalized psychiatric patients were applied to the recall and recognition memory of outpatients. Two positive and one list of 25 neutral words each were learned by the subjects for recognition and then rated as an orienting task during rehearsal for recall. On the first positive list, compared to 20 controls, the 7 patients showed substantial recall deficits, but recognition memory and affective ratings were relatively normal. On the subsequent positive list, outpatients' recall memory declined and did not recover after shifting to neutral words on the third list. There was little evidence for the build-up of interference, instead factors such as
fatigue
may affect patients' recall memory. Recognition memory showed signs of interference contributing to the patients' deficits. Psychiatric outpatients have significant recall deficits, less severe recognition deficits, and attitude problems that may contribute to the high rate of readmissions.

This paper reports an experience over ten years with cementless total hip arthroplasty in a series of 2688 personal cases commencing in 1975. Stress is laid on the results over a period greater than 5 years and up to 10 years as much on the long-term effects on the host bone as on the implant itself. The causes of failure of biological anchorage by endosteal osteogenesis are analysed. Various phenomena, particularly the reaction of the cortices to stress, several cases of bony resorption with debris due to wear and
fatigue
fractures of the stem of the prosthesis have been seen. These and the problems posed by the occasional need for extraction have led to the progressive development of the prosthesis, resulting in 1983 in a new type of anchorage with a polarised surface and a better-balanced prosthesis in relation to stress and extractability.

30 subjects volunteered from three sources: community adults (M age = 32.8, SD = 13.4), college adults (M age = 23.8, SD = 8.3), and children (M age = 9.5, SD = 1.7) and were categorized as 'left-' and 'right-dominant' by scores on Your Style of Thinking and Learning. They reported the number of Necker cube reversals perceived in 90 sec., attempted to locate four embedded figures, and blindly traversed a 16-choice point finger maze in that order. 'Right-dominant' subjects located more embedded figures and made fewer errors on the finger maze than did 'left-dominant' subjects. College adults reported more Necker cube reversals than did community adults and children, and community adults reported more reversals than did children. Confounds of performance measures with
fatigue
and/or practice require further research.

A description is given of a demanding attentional task that requires alternation between naming of colors and transformation of numbers. The task poses high demands on processing capacity and is sensitive to factors that reduce it (such as stress or

). It is short and easy to administer.
