Nitinol based shape memory alloys were introduced to Medicine in the late seventies. They possess a unique combination of properties including shape memory, superelasticity, great workability in the martensitic state, resistance to
fatigue
and corrosion. Despite these exceptional physical, chemical and mechanical properties the worldwide medical application has been hindered for a long time because of the lack of knowledge on the nature of the biocompatibility of these enriched by nickel alloys. A review of biocompatibility with an emphasis on the most recent studies, combined with the results of X-ray surface investigations, allows us to draw conclusions on the origin of the good biological response observed in vivo. The tendency of Nitinol surfaces to be covered with
TiO2
oxides with only a minor amount of nickel under normal conditions is considered to be responsible for these positive results. A certain toxicity, usually observed in in vitro studies, may result from the much higher in vitro Ni concentrations which are probably not possible to achieve in vivo. The essentiality of Ni as a trace element may also contribute to the Nitinol biocompatibility with the human body tissues. Examples of successful medical applications of Nitinol utilizing shape memory and superelasticity are presented.

A chemical solution-deposited multilayer system of SrTiO3 ("STO")/La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 ("LSCO") on a platinized wafer with a layer sequence Pt/
TiO2
/SiO2/Si(bulk) has been investigated by dynamic SIMS (secondary ion mass spectroscopy) and TEM (transmission electron microscopy); element determination was performed with EELS (electron energy-loss spectroscopy). The STO layer is intended to serve as a dielectric layer for a microelectronic capacitor; the conducting LSCO layer is a buffer layer intended to eliminate
fatigue
effects which usually occur at the STO/Pt interface. The SIMS depth profiles obtained for the main components revealed intense diffusion processes which must have occurred during the deposition/crystallization processes. Ti is found to diffuse from the (insulating) STO layer into the conductive LSCO layer where a region of constant concentration is observable. TEM-EELS experiments showed that these Ti plateaus are caused by precipitates approximately 20-80 nm in diameter.

The present investigation explores the effects of a 90-h post-deposition annealing treatment at 400 degrees C in air on the crystallographic and chemical properties of a plasma-sprayed hydroxyapatite (HA) coating, the thickness and composition of the interfacial oxide layer, and the
fatigue
behaviour of the underlying Ti-6Al-4V substrate. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that significant recovery of the crystalline HA structure occurred as a result of the treatment, however, as compared with results obtained through treatment at higher temperatures, recovery obtained through use of the present treatment was incomplete. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis showed no changes in the constituents of the oxide layer, with the oxide species
TiO2
, Al2O3, V2O5, V2O3, and VO2 present on both the as-sprayed and the heat-treated substrates. A change in film thickness was observed, however, as evidenced by a change in colour from opaque bronze to dark purple. The
fatigue
resistance of the substrate was found to be significantly reduced by the heat treatment, with the lives of heat-treated coupons with coatings of all thicknesses closely resembling those of as-sprayed coupons with thick HA coatings and uncoated stress-relieved coupons presented in Part I of this study. Stress relief was identified as the most likely cause of these reductions.

A new surface-coating method by which CaP invert glass is used to improve the bioactivity of titanium alloys has been developed recently. In this method, the powder of CaP invert glass (CaO-P2O5-
TiO2
-Na2O) is coated on the surface of titanium alloy samples and heated between 1073 and 1123 K. With this treatment, a calcium phosphate layer mainly containing beta-Ca3(PO4)2 phase can be coated easily on titanium alloy samples. In the present study, the effect of this coating process on the
fatigue
properties of Ti-29Nb-13Ta-4.6Zr, a new metastable beta alloy for biomedical applications, has been investigated. The
fatigue
endurance limit of the coated alloy was found to be about 15% higher than that of uncoated alloy, as a result of the formation of a hard (alpha + beta) layer and a small amount of the omega phase during the coating process. The coating exhibits excellent adhesion to the substrate during the tensile and
fatigue
tests. Subsequent ageing at 673 K for 259.2 ks greatly improves the
fatigue
resistance of the coated alloy due to isothermal omega phase precipitation, and does not have obvious detrimental effect on the coating properties.

Under pulsed laser UV irradiation, thin-film coatings made of close-packed
TiO2
nanorods individually coated with surfactants can exhibit a temporary increase in their degree of surface hydroxylation without any apparent photocatalytic removal of the capping molecules. This mechanism provides a basis for achieving light-driven conversion from a highly hydrophobic to a highly hydrophilic, metastable state, followed by extremely slow recovery of the original conditions under dark ambient environment. A deeper insight into the wetting dynamics is gained by time-dependent water contact-angle and infrared spectroscopy monitoring of the film properties under different post-UV storage conditions. Our study reveals that, for reversible switchability between extreme wettability excursions and long-term repeatability of such changes to be achieved, specific modifications in the polar and nonpolar components of the
TiO2
films need to be guaranteed along with preservation of the original geometric arrangement of the nanocrystal building blocks. The application of moderate vacuum is found to be an effective method for accelerating the post-UV hydrophilic-to-hydrophobic conversion, thereby enabling fast and cyclic hydrophilization/hydrophobicization alternation without any detrimental signs of significant
fatigue
.

The photovoltaic effects of blending gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) into the donor layer of a poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT)/
TiO2
bilayer heterojunction device have been studied. P3HT was synthesized via the modified Gragnard metathesis method and AuNPs with sizes ranging from 12 to 15 nm were formed via a reduction of HAuCl4. The blending of AuNPs into P3HT caused a lower photoluminescence (PL) intensities and a
decreased energy
level of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) than the pristine P3HT owing to the good electron-accepting nature of AuNPs. Upon the use of P3HT-AuNPs as the donor layer, the decreased HOMO(donor) resulted in an increased open circuit voltage (V(OC)) and thus enabled the fabricated (P3HT-AuNPs)/
TiO2
bilayer heterojunction photovoltaic device to have an improved power conversion efficiency of solar energy. V(OC) as well as the overall power conversion efficiency increased with an increase in the AuNP content as a result of additional interfaces which facilitated the charge separation of excitons and percolation pathways which enhanced the electron transfer to the
TiO2
acceptor. Furthermore, unannealed P3HT-AuNPs exhibited nanoholes and provided photovoltaic devices a power conversion efficiency nearly two time higher than annealed P3HT-AuNPs.

TiO2
layer through dip-coating sol-gel. Control groups and coated samples of superelastic NiTi instruments model RaCe 25/0.06 (0.25mm tip-diameter, 6% conicity) were comparatively investigated with respect to the cutting efficiency,
fatigue
life, and corrosion resistance. Results showed an improvement in cutting efficiency for the coated samples and a high resistance to corrosion in NaClO. The coated instruments showed a better performance in
fatigue
life after corrosion.

Currently, robust and functional hydrogels have attracted extensive attention due to their potential applications in wastewater treatment, farmland water conservation and other fields. Herein, a series of hydrophobic association hydrogels assisted by titanium dioxide (
TiO2
) was fabricated via one-pot in situ photo-induced polymerization.
TiO2
nanoparticles could act as both photo-initiators and physical crosslinking points. The
TiO2
-assisted hydrophobic association hydrogels exhibited a high tensile strength of 306 kPa, superior compression strength of 2.17 MPa and excellent
fatigue
resistance. Simultaneously, the incorporation of
TiO2
endowed the hydrogel with photocatalytic capacity for dye wastewater treatment based on the inherent nature of
TiO2
. The results indicated that the hydrogels contributed to the degradation of various ionic dyes including methylene blue, rhodamine B and bromophenol blue, and the removal of methylene blue achieved a rate of 96.63%. Significantly, the hydrogel could be repeatedly utilized and the removal rate showed no evident decrease after five cycles, indicating that the hydrogels could be powerful candidates as photocatalysts for dye wastewater treatment.
