Fatigue of night duty workers in different divisions of a newspaper office was investigated by physiological methods such as the Blinker, Flicker and grip methods. The relationship between fatigue and hematological parameters such as hemoglobin (Hb), the hematocrit (Ht), serum-free amino acid levels, and indices of liver function such as the GOT and GPT levels were also examined. The composing and press room workers mainly complained of the subjective symptom of muscle fatigue, while workers in the photo-engraving and editorial departments mainly complained of mental fatigue. The overall rate of fatigue in the newspaper office was about 38.1%, but varied from one division to another, being especially high in the photo-engraving and editorial departments. The subjects with fatigue had low levels of serum GOT and GPT and high levels of serum-gluconeogenic amino acids, such as aspartic acid, glutamic acid, prolin, glycine, and alanine. These altered levels of serum-free amino acids and GOT and GPT seemed to be due to increased secretion of adrenal corticoid hormone caused by the stress of fatigue.

Fatigue has been widely assumed to increase after major surgery, and possible physical explanations have been intensively investigated. Nevertheless, existing data are almost exclusively from abdominal surgery and are based on the use of a single visual analogue scale. Moreover, no physical basis has been found. The present study used a more homogeneous surgical model than has been employed hitherto in order to find whether fatigue was related to emotional state. We measured fatigue before and 1 and 7 weeks after major joint arthroplasty in 63 patients, using a questionnaire that separates mental and physical fatigue. Physical function and subjective emotional and somatic state were measured at the same times; optimism was measured preoperatively. Neither mental nor physical fatigue increased after this form of surgery. Mental and physical fatigue each correlated with low positive mood throughout. The best predictor of physical fatigue postoperatively and at follow-up was preoperative physical fatigue. Preoperative mental fatigue and negative mood were independent predictors of mental fatigue postoperatively and at follow-up. Preoperative fatigue also predicted worse subjective emotional and physical state after surgery. These results suggest that fatigue should be regarded as an aspect of emotional distress perioperatively and that complaints of fatigue postoperatively may reflect the tendency to complain of fatigue or negative mood preoperatively rather than being attributable to surgical trauma.

The method of binocular stereoscopic imaging has attracted attention as a simple and technically feasible means of three-dimensional (3-D) display. It has been said, however, that the binocular picture system is more fatiguing to view than a conventional two-dimensional picture, much as the current television picture. The main objective of this paper is to evaluate quantitatively fatigue caused by binocular stereoscopic picture viewing, to clarify the basic characteristics of this type of picture. Various measurement methods of fatigue have been proposed, and that using the critical flicker frequency (CFF) has found wide use in measurement of mental fatigue and is easy to make. Actual measurement in this study used the CFF value obtained in a descending series of the method of limits, normalized to the value at the start of measurement for each observer, and the CFFs of all observers then averaged. It was found that the measurements produced stable and highly accurate results. CFFs of the observers of a current television picture and a binocular stereoscopic television picture were measured. It was found that the conventional television did not cause a statistically significant decrease in CFF--even over 1 h of viewing--but that the stereoscopic television did cause a significant CFF decrease within 30 min. It was also found that the CFF decreases are related to a subjective feeling of fatigue. From these results, it was concluded that CFF is an effective measure for objectively measuring the fatigue of television observers, including observers of binocular stereoscopic television. Also, the binocular stereoscopic television produced higher fatigue in observers than did the conventional television picture, but it was found that with respect to CFF viewing of around 30 min was allowable.

A mailed questionnaire survey was conducted on a population of 705 mothers of twins, 96 mothers of triplets, 7 mothers of quadruplets and 2 mothers of quintuplets to study the actual conditions of help and support of childcare in the families with multiple birth children. The following results were obtained. 1) In this study, 90.6% of the mothers of twins, 89.6% of the mothers of triplets, 100.0% of the mothers of quadruplets and 100.0% of the mothers of quintuplets had at least one relative and friend from whom they received practical help and regular support. However, 5.8% of the mothers of twins and 8.3% of the mothers of triplets did not have others from whom they received help and support. 2) Lack of time to take care of the other children was reported by approximately 90% of mothers with twins who did not have others from whom they received help and support for childcare. 3) Mothers who did not receive help and support from others for childcare reported severe fatigue, compared to mothers who received help and support from others: mothers of twins, especially reported severe mental fatigue and mothers of triplets or more, severe physical fatigue. 4) Mothers of twins who had no way to alleviate stress reported severe physical and mental fatigue, compared to mothers who had ways to alleviate stress. Mothers of triplets or more showed a similar tendency as mothers of twins. These mothers alleviated stress by talking with other mothers of multiple birth children, friends, their maternal mother or their husband.

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) patients suffer from disabling physical and mental fatigue. Circulating autoimmune antibodies may produce symptoms of muscular fatigue by reacting with acetylcholine receptors or calcium binding channels. They can also produce mental status changes by reacting with central nervous system (CNS) antigens. We thoroughly investigated the presence of circulating antimuscle and anti-CNS antibodies in 10 CFS patients and 10 controls. We were unable to detect any pathogenic antibodies.

The Fatigue Symptom Checklist (FSC) (Yoshitake, 1978), developed in Japan, was selected to measure postpartum fatigue among American women. Minor wording changes and a change in the reference time frame were made. Reliability and validity of this modification of the FSC were tested in this reanalysis of data from a longitudinal study of 285 mothers. Internal consistency reliability for the total 30-item FSC was acceptable. Evidence for criterion-related and construct validity was found. Original FSC subscales were not confirmed in these analyses. Using factor analysis, a shortened 10-item postpartum scale and two postpartum subscales, physical and mental fatigue, were identified. LISRAEL confirmatory factor analysis supported the subscales. Results support appropriateness of the total 30-item FSC, the shortened 10-item postpartum scale, and postpartum subscales for measuring postpartum fatigue in American women.

Work generally affects workers in terms of both physical and mental health. Workers must adapt their life pattern to match shift-work styles which can result in family problems, increased fatigue level, lower work efficiency, higher accident rate, illnesses, and lower productivity. The project obtained an entry permission to study the impact of shift work on fatigue level of workers in a sanitary-ware factory. The objectives were: 1) to evaluate fatigue levels of workers who worked in the morning shift and night shift, and 2) to prioritize contributing factors affecting fatigue levels using a model of fuzzy set theory. Twelve male workers participated in the study. Four subjects were recruited from each of 3 departments, i.e., glazing, baking and quality inspection. The measurement was conducted before and after the shift for both shifts. Variables included heart rate monitoring throughout the work shift, critical flicker fusion frequency, reaction time response, hand-grip strength, and wet-bulb globe temperature. Results were analyzed using a computerized statistical package. It was concluded from this study that mental fatigue from working in the morning shift was significantly higher than the one for working in the night shift. The same indication was also true in the case of physical fatigue, though it was not statistically significant. From the fuzzy set analysis, it was confirmed that working in the morning shift resulted in a higher fatigue level than working in the night shift and the temperature of the work environment was the most important factor contributing to the higher fatigue level.

Patients with chronic illnesses, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), report an increase in the perception of fatigue in the clinical setting. Subjective fatigue associated with physiological factors has not been reported. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between subjective fatigue and pulmonary function, respiratory and peripheral muscle force and exercise capacity in patients with COPD. Nineteen patients with COPD participated in the study [mean (SD) FEV1 38% (17%) predicted]. Fatigue was measured with the Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory 20 (MFI-20) that includes the following subscale dimensions: general fatigue, physical fatigue, reduced activity, reduced motivation, and mental fatigue. The following physical variables were measured: forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), vital capacity (VC), maximal inspiratory peak pressure (PImax), symptom-limited bicycle exercise capacity (maximum workload) and maximal voluntary isometric muscle force of both left and right quadriceps (Qu), hamstrings (Ha), biceps (Bi) and triceps (Tr). The MFI-20 fatigue dimensions, reduced activity and reduced Motivation, are significantly correlated with FEV1 (% predicted) (r = -0.62, r = -0.55 respectively). No significant correlation was found between the dimensions of fatigue and maximum workload. In contrast the fatigue dimension, physical fatigue, shows significant correlations with seven of eight muscle forces measured (Qu left r = -0.49, right r = -0.54; Ha left r = -0.49, right r-0.38; Tr left r = -0.61, right r = -0.45; Bi left r = -0.46, right r = -0.48). Data from this study show that activity and physical dimensions of subjective fatigue are related to pulmonary function and skeletal muscle force in COPD patients. Interventions to improve skeletal muscle force might improve subjective fatigue in patients with COPD.

The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between mental fatigue and event-related potentials (ERPs). Six healthy men (mean age: 22 years old) performed a simple calculation for 6 h. Auditory ERPs were recorded before and after the calculating task. The scores of subjective fatigue symptoms were significantly increased, and P300 latency of auditory ERPs was significantly prolonged by the calculating task (P<0.05). We suggest that the recording of ERPs may be useful for the objective evaluation of mental fatigue.

The aim of this cross-sectional descriptive study was to determine whether people with multiple sclerosis differentially experience physical and mental fatigue, and whether the pattern of fatigue is influenced by mood, disease duration, or disease course. Seventy-eight consecutive out-patients with multiple sclerosis were asked to complete the Fatigue Rating Scale (FRS) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HAD). Sixty-eight (87%) subjects completed the questionnaires. Fifty-eight (85%) subjects in this group scored above the recommended cut-off for fatigue on the FRS scale. Both the mental fatigue score and the total fatigue score were positively correlated with the depression and anxiety scores on the HAD scale. There was no significant correlation between the physical fatigue score and either of the HAD subscale scores. There was no significant association between duration of disease or disease course and the total scores or subscale scores of the FRS and HAD. This is the first reported study to differentiate between mental and physical fatigue in multiple sclerosis and to demonstrate a significant correlation between fatigue and mood level. This has important implications for the effective treatment of fatigue in multiple sclerosis.
