This study examined the
fatigue
symptoms and their relative factors in a group of nursery teachers and guidance workers (n = 480) belonging to institutions for the mentally retarded. 1) More than 50% of the respondents complained of neck stiffness and/or backache. The mean scores of the physical symptoms were higher than the standard cumulative
fatigue
symptoms index, while those of the mental symptoms were lower. 2) Analysis of variance showed that physical
fatigue
symptoms were higher in females, younger workers, those with longer years of service, those with more night duties per month, and those who expressed more dissatisfaction with their co-workers, wages, working hours, and work shift. Physical
fatigue
symptoms were not related to the severity of the mental disease of their clients. 3) Analysis of variance also showed that
mental fatigue
symptoms were higher in females, younger workers, and persons who expressed more dissatisfaction with their jobs, supervisors, co-workers, wages, working hours, and work shift. The severity of the mental disease of their clients was directly related to the
mental fatigue
symptoms. Furthermore, multiple classification analysis showed that those working with children had both higher irritability and morale than those working with adults.

Random samples of middle-aged (35-64) male residents of two different areas in Tokyo, Bunkyo-ku, a low-mortality area (n = 767) and Koto-ku a high mortality area (n = 790) were interviewed between March and April in 1988, concerning health and life style. The two populations were compared regarding, 1) health status which was examined from the view point of
fatigue
, symptoms and self-rated health, 2) factors related to the three health indices. The main results were as follows: 1. No significant differences were seen between the two populations in the gross means for health indices. However when the health indices were stratified by age group,
mental fatigue
and minor symptoms were more prevalent in Bunkyo-ku than Koto-ku among young people, while prevalence of physical
fatigue
and major symptoms was higher in Koto-ku among old people. 2. The relationship between the health indices and job type, income, education and marital status was examined. In Bunkyo-ku, no relationship was seen after controlling for age, working conditions and life style. On the other hand, in Koto-ku, significant relationships were seen with age, job type and marital status, and health problems were prevalent not only among those with low socioeconomic status but also in other socioeconomic groups. These results were maintained even after controlling for age, working conditions and life style, similar to the analysis for Bunkyo-ku, indicating that health problems in this population do not appear to be solely the result of working conditions or life style.

A non-saturated mixed-gas dive to 180 meters depth was carried out at JAMSTEC, using diving simulator (hyperbaric chamber) facilities. Compression started at 10:00 h with helium and oxygen and was carried out at a rate of 12 m/min. Decompression started at 11:15 h using the Comex Helox 180 Diving Manual. Decompression to 1 ATA required 49.2 h. A survey of subjective symptoms, sleep feelings and ball-bearing tests were performed. All night electrophysiological recording of subjects' sleep was performed and polygraphic analysis of nocturnal sleep was done with visual scoring. The results were as follows: Arriving at 180 meters, the complaint rate was 39.2% and
fatigue
was greater. The type of
fatigue
that was based on the composition + ratio of symptoms was that of
mental fatigue
. During the decompression it was recovery. The performance in the ball-bearing test decreased about 20% at a depth of 180 meters because of tremors and disturbance of attention as well as other factors showing symptoms of high-pressure nervous syndrome. The sleep feelings were different in experienced persons and non-experienced persons. The non-experienced persons had markedly decreased REM stages and slept badly all night. Based on these results,
fatigue
and the performance of divers were discussed.

The variations of neurotic symptoms and subjective symptoms of
fatigue
were studied in relation to circumstances aboard ship in subsamples of the crew (N = 24) and students and researchers (N = 24) of a training ship belonging to a university during a summer voyage of the North Pacific route in 1987. The data were obtained by a self-administered questionnaire administered seven times before and during the voyage. The present study analysed the data collected during the 40 d voyage (the first four questionnaires including that before departure). Complaints of neurotic symptoms and
fatigue
were reported to be much greater in the present sample than those in a general occupational setting. Although the complaints reported by students and researchers decreased at landing, complaints of physical
fatigue
reported by the crew increased at landing but those of
mental fatigue
hardly changed. With regard to correlation between the values of the responses to circumstances aboard ship and the values of neurotic symptoms and
fatigue
, "quality of sleep" was significantly correlated with these symptoms for the crew. For the students and researchers, significant correlations were demonstrated between such items as "boredom toward work" and "quality of sleep", and physical
fatigue
, between the "anxiety over disease" and
mental fatigue
and "anxiety over disease", "risk of injury" and "fear of death" and neurotic symptoms in the first survey after departure (13th day).

Sustained exercise to
fatigue
elicits no major differences either in plasma amino acid levels or in brain 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) metabolism between sedentary and endurance-trained animals. Furthermore, 11 weeks of endurance training did not influence the maximal activity of the enzyme monoamine oxidase in the brain areas which were studied. In both sedentary and endurance-trained rats, sustained running to
fatigue
caused an increase in the plasma concentration ratio of free tryptophan/other large neutral amino acids and an increase in the concentration of tryptophan in the six brain areas that were studied. The increase was similar in the different regions of the brain and averaged 36%. Exercise caused an increase in the levels of 5-HT and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) in the brain stem (14 and 44% respectively) and hypothalamus (16 and 17% respectively) and an increase in the level of 5-HIAA in the hippocampus (21%) and striatum (28%). Exercise also caused an increase in the level of dopamine in the brain stem (56%) and hypothalamus (46%) and of nor adrenaline in the striatum (59%). Since the levels of 5-HT and dopamine were both increased in the brain stem and hypothalamus, it is possible that these changes may play important roles in the central effects of exercise, including both physical and
mental fatigue
and effects on mood.

The differences in physiological and safety conditions of one-man buses and two-man buses were examined from the view point of occupational
fatigue
. This survey consisted of a work load study which included a time study, study of subsidiary behavior, auditory task, memory test, Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) and physiological function tests and a self-administered questionnaire which involved items concerning safety and subjective
fatigue
complaints. The visual and postural restrictions in the one-man bus were greater than in the two-man bus. The mental capacity of the one-man bus drivers was found to be less. Greater
mental fatigue
and stress were observed in the one-man bus. More subjective
fatigue
complaints were observed in the one-man bus. More cases of near accidents were observed in the one-man bus. From these results it was concluded that the one-man bus caused bus drivers a greater mental and physical work load.

The number of gainfully occupied couples has been increasing. A survey on the subjective symptoms of
fatigue
and on life and work was carried out on 996 personnel belonging to a university hospital in order to ascertain their
fatigue
pattern and the following results were obtained. 1. Both the husbands and wives showed II-dominant type (mental-work type, night-work type) among the three types classified by subjective symptoms. 2. When compared with the results of our previous survey, though T value was not so high, II/T value was high and III/T value was low in both groups of husbands and wives, suggesting a marked tendency of
mental fatigue
. 3. Difference in complaint rate of
fatigue
between pre- and post-work in the group of husbands was smaller than that in the group of wives, suggesting that the group of husbands is slower in recovery from
fatigue
after work. 4. The level of physical activity at work and the amount of physical work such as caring of children and housekeeping was higher in wives, while the husband's work is mental and the amount of physical work is relatively small. Thus, wives appear to recover faster from
mental fatigue
. It is considered that husbands need to improve their manner of spending their free time. 5. The results of regression analysis on the complaint rate in wives and husbands showed that there is a correlation between the complaint rate of wives and that of their husbands. Therefore, as a counter-measure to
fatigue
, improvement of life pattern outside of working time is important as well as that of work.

The difference in the physiological condition of drivers of manual transmission buses (MTB) and automatic transmission buses (ATB) was examined from the viewpoint of occupational health. This study was based on a self-administered questionnaire which involved items concerning subjective
fatigue
complaints. No differences in the
mental fatigue
and stress between MTB drivers and ATB drivers were observed. Although ATB drivers tended to feel less physical
fatigue
than MTB drivers, the difference was not statistically significant. From these results, it was suggested that there was little difference in the subjective
fatigue
between ATB drivers and MTB drivers.

Effects of physical, mental, and vigilance
fatigue
on the autokinetic reports of 48 undergraduate students are described. Eight response measures were taken of the subjects with an apparatus that permitted recording of the apparent motion of the autokinetic stimulus in the same plane as the light source. Presence of the
fatigue
states was verified by independent measurements.
Fatigue
conditions facilitated quick and continuous perception of the autokinetic movements. The most perceptual complexity in the patterns of apparent motion was observed under
mental fatigue
followed by physical and vigilance
fatigue
, with least in the neutral condition.

We assumed the possibility of adopting FDP as an index of
fatigue
and carried out examinations upon various load conditions causing stress. For our observations other indices which are thought effective for
fatigue
evaluation, such as urine CA, flicker values, response time, Uchida's Kraepelin test, and examination of subjective symptoms recommended by the Japan Association of Industrial Health, were adopted at the same time. 1) Both mental and physical loads increased FDP values both in serum and in urine. 2) These changes in FDP values agreed comparatively well with the changes in CA by load. 3) The FDP value showed changes by load which was so light that it did not induce functional deterioration detectable by the response time or the flicker value which was considered to be one of effective physiological indices. 4) The extent or degree of subjective symptoms found by the survey agreed well with the changes in FDP values. Through above examinations, FDP values of serum and urine seem to be useful as an index of transient
fatigue
; especially they can well reflect
mental fatigue
which cannot be indicated well by other biochemical indices. Also FDP can well show individual characteristics, namely FDP indicates comparatively satisfactorily both individual sensitivity and specificity. Furthermore, this method does not require special techniques and examinations can be done simply.
