Two-hundred twenty eight students of Warsaw Medical University (98 males and 130 females) completed a questionnaire providing information on health perceptions, somatic complaints, chronic diseases and hospital stay. Over 90% of students reported their health status in good and very good categories. The most common complaints were fatigue and nervous exhaustion. The average prevalence of chronic diseases was 30% among women and 9.2% among men. About 4% of male students and 10% of female students were hospitalized in the past 12 months.

It offers a brief introduction to this medical category and a more detailed discussion of some supporting debates, including the idea of nervous exhaustion, twentieth-century studies and concerns on fatigue, and the malady's presumed somatogenesis. The concluding analysis of how the category met its demise highlights elements that altered its status and its diagnostic usefulness.
