The clinical features of 150 consecutive patients with irritable bowel syndrome are reported. All patients were referred to a private practice. There was a marked female preponderance and a wide range of ages. Diarrhoea was predominant in 61,3%. The common symptoms were altered bowel habit, abdominal pain, emotional disturbance, flatulence and distension. Fatigue, weight loss, upper gastrointestinal symptoms, backache and urinary symptoms were frequent. The rectum showed nonspecific loss of vascular pattern, oedema and congestion in 11,4% of patients, but this was readily distinguished from inflammatory bowel disease on histological examination. The incidence of non-smokers in the group was 78,1%. The overall appendicectomy rate was 34%, and 65% of the 92 women had had gynaecological operations. A positive diagnosis was made on a typical history and simple basic investigations. More extensive investigations were required for those patients with markers of organic disease, but these yielded few associated lesions.

In recent years there has been an increasing number of cases presenting with a newly recognized multiple systemic disorder, Eosinophilia-Myalgia Syndrome (EMS), in the United States. This report documents demographic data and scores from intelligence, memory, neuropsychological, and achievement testing from eight patients, and Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) profiles obtained by nine patients, all of whom were referred to a doctoral level neuropsychologist in private practice. Intelligence scores revealed a Full Scale Mean IQ of 90.6, with a Verbal IQ Mean of 92.3, and a Performance IQ Mean of 90.9 for the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale--Revised. For the Wechsler Memory Scale, the patients earned a mean Memory Quotient of 80.5. On the Halstead-Reitan Neuropsychological Test Battery, the patients earned a mean Impairment Index of .82, and Achievement Test scores on the Wide Range Achievement Test--Revised ranged from a grade level of 4th grade to a grade level of above 12th grade for reading, and from a grade level of 5th grade to a grade level of above 12th grade for arithmetic. Both the modal and mean MMPI-2 profiles had 2-3/3-2 two point codes suggesting feelings of depression, tension, nervousness, fatigue, helplessness, somatic complaints and overcontrol. In all, the neuropsychological, intellectual, memory and achievement test scores suggested a pattern of moderate to severe impairment and the MMPI-2 test scores suggested a pattern of moderate emotional disturbance.

The implications of patients' approaches to managing chronic fatigue syndrome were examined in a cross-sectional study. With severity of fatigue controlled, attempting to maintain activity was associated with less functional impairment, while accommodating to the illness was positively related to impairment; behavioural disengagement was related not only to higher levels of impairment but also to greater emotional disturbance. Fatigue itself was positively associated with focusing on symptoms and with behavioural disengagement; it was associated also with illness accommodation, but only for illness of longer duration. The causal direction of relationships between coping and fatigue severity is ambiguous, and a follow-up study will address the effects of coping on changes in the illness over time.

Adverse mood effects of overexposure to Manganese (Mn) have been described in 15 studies which frequently report an association of Mn exposure with adverse effects in six dimensions of mood: 1) anxiety, nervousness, irritability; 2) psychotic experiences; 3) emotional disturbance; 4) fatigue, lack of vigor, sleep disturbance; 5) impulsive/compulsive behavior; 6) aggression hostility. Only 1:15 studies used a standardized psychological measure of mood, while the current study of environmental Mn exposure used two standardized mood scales in evaluating low levels of Mn exposure and mood sequelae. The Profile of Moods State (POMS) and Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) were used, and results indicate that men who are older and have higher Mn levels show significant disturbances on four of the six mood dimensions. Increased scores were seen in the anxiety, nervousness, irritability; emotional disturbance; and aggression, hostility dimensions relative to those who had lower levels of Mn. The BSI and POMS are useful adjuncts in the assessment of mood/Mn effects.

The purpose of this research was to explore the following objectives for infertile couples receiving infertility treatment: Differences between wives and husbands in their emotional reactions and coping behaviors. This research, using structured questionnaires, was based on 120 infertile couples attending the Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) or the In Vitro Fertilization-Embryo Transfer (IVF-ET) program. The research instruments consisted of Demographic Data Form, Profile of Mood States (POMS), and Ways of Coping Questionnaire. The research results showed that infertile wives experienced more emotional disturbance than husbands did, as shown in the four subscales of Tension-Anxiety, Depression-Dejection, Anger-Hostility, and Fatigue-Inertia, as well as the total scale of POMS. It was also shown that wives adopted more coping behaviors to deal with infertility and treatment than husbands did, as revealed in the subscales of Self-Controlling, Seeking Social Support and Escape-Avoidance and the total scale of the Ways of Coping Questionnaire. All of the above reached significant statistical differences. The emotional reactions of infertile couples varied with the differences in education levels, duration of treatment, number of treatments received, and numbers of existing children. The emotional reactions of infertile husbands had a significantly positive correlation with the factors Confronting, Accepting Responsibility, and Escape-Avoidance. The emotional reactions of wives had a significantly negative correlation with Positive Reappraisal. The research results can provide clinical staff with a correct understanding of the differences between husbands and wives in emotional reactions and coping behavior, as well as related factors, to help them to provide better medical treatment.

Previous epidemiological and clinical studies of humans exposed to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) indicate that the majority of patients have neurological complaints (e.g., headache, vertigo, paresthesias, poor memory and concentration, fatigue, depression). Since only a small minority of PCB-exposed patients demonstrate abnormalities on objective neurological measures (e.g., CT-scans, EEC, nerve conduction velocity), it is particularly unfortunate that objective neuropsychological data has not been published to substantiate patient complaints. The present study provides neuropsychological test data on two patients exposed to PCBs. In both cases, PCB exposure is documented by an analysis of PCB levels in the patients' work environments. Despite the absence of abnormalities on CT-scans and EEC, both patients displayed a variety of cognitive deficits and emotional disturbance. Serial assessment of one patient with high blood levels of PCBs revealed a dementia (sharing certain features with Alzheimer's disease) and an organic affective syndrome. Assessment of a second patient exposed to PCBs (but with no detectable blood levels of PCBs) suggested that his cognitive impairments were not due to PCB exposure. The present study provides data which points to the importance and sensitivity of neuropsychological examination in cases of PCB-exposure.

1. No evidence has been obtained that in cats and dogs with the nerves of one adrenal cut, emotional disturbances cause depletion of the epinephrin store of the normally innervated adrenal as compared with its fellow. 2. The depletion of the epinephrin store in cats under morphine is not dependent upon so called morphine fright, since a similar depletion is found in dogs in which, as is known, morphine produces symptoms the reverse of those of fright. 3. The signs of morphine fright can all be elicited by administering morphine to a cat in which one adrenal has been removed and the nerve supply of the other cut, and in which accordingly no detectable liberation of epinephrin takes place. 4. The reactions of the denervated iris elicited by emotional disturbance, asphyxia, or etherization in a cat, one of whose adrenals has been removed and the nerves of the other cut, do not differ from these reactions in cats whose adrenals have not been interfered with. 5. The influence of postoperative edema of the adrenal in diminishing the epinephrin load, and the recuperation of the load after a time, have been studied in rabbits. 6. The diminution in the epinephrin store of the adrenals which follows operations on animals (postoperative depletion) has been studied. It is only in part associated with the anesthesia, since it may be as marked 6 or 8 hours after an operation lasting less than 1 hour as after 6 or 8 hours' anesthesia without operation. 7. One adrenal was removed in rabbits and the epinephrin content of the remaining gland assayed at varying periods of time after removal of the first, the periods being longer than the time necessary for recovery from the postoperative depletion. In general, the second adrenal contained more epinephrin than the first, sometimes double the amount. 8. Marked depletion of the epinephrin store of innervated adrenals as compared with the corresponding denervated glands was seen in animals dead of infections of various kinds. 9. As shown by Elliott, diminution of the stock of epinephrin in the adrenal through electrical stimulation of the splanchnics is not easy to demonstrate, despite the fact that the liberation of epinephrin into the blood is notably increased by the stimulation. With short periods of stimulation, however, repeated over a long time at intervals just long enough to prevent fatigue, it has proved possible to demonstrate a distinct depletion.

Chart review of population (9 to 80 years) neuropsychological test battery for ADHD diagnosis, questionnaires with multiple responders were evaluated in outpatient setting from 1989-2009. The focus was gender differences across age, diagnostic group (ADHD-Inattentive/ADHD plus), neuropsychological test performance, and reported sleep symptoms over the lifespan. Individuals were assigned to ADHD-I group or ADHD plus group (based upon secondary diagnosis of sleep, behavioral, emotional disturbance); ADHD not primary was excluded (brain insult, psychosis). Among these were 1,828 children (ages 9 to 14), adolescents (ages 15 to 17), and adults (ages 18 and above); 446 children (312 diagnosed ADHD-I), 218 adolescents (163 diagnosed ADHD-I), and 1,163 adults (877 ADHD-I). Sleep was problematic regardless of age, ADHD subtype, and gender. The type and number of sleep problems and fatigue were age dependent. ADHD subtype, gender, fatigue, age, and sleep (sleep onset, unrefreshing sleep, sleep maintenance) were significant variables affecting neuropsychological test performance (sequencing, cognitive flexibility, slow- and fast-paced input, divided attention, whole brain functioning). Findings suggest that ADHD involves numerous factors and symptoms beyond attention, such as sleep which interacts differently dependent upon age.

On the base of the idea of traditional Chinese medicine as "disease prevention", the mode and the protocol of the moxibustion intervention for the group under quarantine after close contact with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) were explored. The group under quarantine after close contact with COVID-19 was taken as the subjects. By the non-contact physician-patient communication network platform co-developed by China Association of Acupuncture-Moxibustion, Hunan Provincial Association of Acupuncture-Moxibustion, Data Center of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences and Yuge Medicine Company, an exploratory randomized controlled trial was designed. A total of 100 cases were included and randomized into a moxibustion group and a conventional intervention group, 50 cases in each one. In the moxibustion group, moxibustion intervention was used. In the conventional intervention group, the conventional observation was adopted without moxibusiton intervention applied. The outcomes included the symptoms changes, e.g. anxiety, emotional disturbance, fatigue, headache and diarrhea, as well as whether quarantine release and the case confirmed or not, etc. The results were evaluated before intervention, in 14 days of intervention and 2 weeks after intervention separately. In this research, on the base of internet plus technology and with the internet communication platform adopted, through mobile phone WeChat App, it was to implement the subject screen, the random allocation and the instruction of moxibustion intervention as well as the quality control of patient's diary and data collection. It is anticipated that the significance and the implementation mode of moxibustion intervention can be assessed preliminarily for the group under quarantine after close contact with COVID-19.
